BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Paramount filed a motion on Friday to dismiss a lawsuit that claims “Top Gun: Maverick” infringes on the copyright of the 1983 magazine article that was the source material for the original film. Shosh and Yuval Yonay, the widow and son of writer Ehud Yonay, filed the suit in June, arguing that the studio made the sequel without renewing the rights to the article. In the motion to dismiss, Paramount argued it did not need to obtain the rights, because “Top Gun: Maverick” is a work of fiction that has almost nothing in common with the non-fiction article and that the facts and ideas conveyed in the article cannot be copyrighted. The studio’s lawyers argue: “Plaintiffs do not have a monopoly over works about Top Gun.” A hearing is set for Sept. 26.

★ J.K. Rowling is finally breaking her silence on why she didn’t appear on the HBO Max special “Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts”. The author of the books that spawned the successful movies revealed that her absence from the reunion was simply because it was not something she wanted to do. She told Graham Norton on his UK radio show that she was not excluded from the reunion, saying: “I was asked to be on that and I decided I didn’t want to do it. I thought it was about the films more than the book, quite rightly, that was what the anniversary was about.” The HBO Max special premiered on January 1 and it featured all of the key players that made the Harry Potter movies a success.

★ Shia LaBeouf is addressing the allegations of abuse that have been levelled against him by his ex FKA Twigs, seemingly acknowledging that her accusations are true. The scandal-plagued actor appeared on the podcast “Real Ones,” saying: “I hurt that woman,” without addressing the singer-songwriter by name. He also admitted that he “hurt many other people”, calling himself “a pleasure-seeking, selfish, self-centred, dishonest, inconsiderate, fearful human being.” LaBeouf claims to have turned over a new leaf after embracing Catholicism.

★ HBO has given “House of the Dragon” an early renewal for Season 2 after a record-setting debut for the “Game of Thrones” prequel series. House of the Dragon launched August 21, to the largest audience for any new original series in HBO history. The first episode has now been seen by over 20 million viewers across linear, on demand and HBO Max platforms in the US. EVP HBO Programming Francesca Orsi said: “We are beyond proud of what the entire House of the Dragon team has accomplished with season one…delivering a show that has already established itself as must-see-TV…We couldn’t be more excited to continue bringing to life the epic saga of House Targaryen with Season 2.”

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Kendrick Lamar – says he doesn’t “hate” social media, he just doesn’t “really know” how to use it. The rapper, who released the album “Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers” in May, boasts over 11 million followers on Instagram and 12 million on Twitter, but rarely posts online.
• Jennifer Lopez – It’s come out that she performed a groovy new song for husband Ben Affleck during their 3-day wedding celebration earlier this month. A video shows JLo in her wedding dress performing the song alongside dancers as Ben sits in a chair in the middle of the dancefloor. The main lyrics: “I can’t get enough, no I can’t get enough.” LINK:  https://tinyurl.com/ym483za6
• Elton John & Britney Spears – Friday, they released their collaborative single ‘Hold Me Closer’. The song, a reimagining of sorts of John’s classic ‘Tiny Dancer’, interspersed with elements of 1992’s ‘The One’ and 1976’s ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart’, is Spears’ first new release in 6 years. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/pw2fj45p
• Red Hot Chili Peppers – chose Cheech & Chong over Johnny Depp to present them with the Global Icon Award during the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards celebrations last night.
• The Beatles – There is an elaborate, remastered and expanded edition of 1966’s “Revolver” on the way. Variety reports that Apple Corps and Universal Music plan to revisit the album this fall, complete with a remix, similar to previous box set reissues of “The White Album” and “Let It Be”.
• Luke Bryan – has released “#1’s”, a vinyl box set of more than 20 of his #1 hits. The collection is pressed on 2 exclusive vinyl colors (brown swirl and tangerine lemon), and comes with an album artwork poster. It’s available at his website. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2exrkwbv
• Mickey Guyton – Friday, she shared her jubilant new single ‘Somethin’ Bout You’, an uplifting tribute to life, love and all the little moments in between. Guyton, who co-wrote the tune with David Garcia and Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard, says that the lyrics echo her own newly-shifted outlook on life. LINK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqUG_Ec9Iow&t=4s
• Johnny Cash – The iconic California estate that he designed and custom built has sold for $1.85 million. The 5-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom, 4,500-square-foot home in the hills above the rural community of Casitas Springs was built in 1961, and offers all of the highest-level amenities from that time period, including built-in wood features in the kitchen and living room, a built-in record player and an intercom.

SHOOTING THE BULL

NOT QUITE QUITTING, “QUIET QUITTING”:
OK, we haven’t talked about this yet, but it’s quickly becoming one of the big buzzwords of 2022: “Quiet quitting”. The term appeared widely this month, trending on Twitter and inspiring a TikTok hashtag that’s accumulated more than 30 million views. What is it? “Quiet-quitting is the concept of performing your job expectations and not going above and beyond,” according to one HR expert. Basically, if you’ve decided to attend work daily and complete your mandatory tasks, but will not stay additional hours or take on extra projects, you’re a “quiet quitter”. The sudden popularity of the concept is thought to reflect patterns observed in the changing labor market, as employers are seen to squeeze more and more productivity out of workers while paying them the same or less. The resulting resentment among workers, plus the feeling that there’s more to life than rising to the top of the corporate ladder and making the most money possible, has led many to the “work to live, not live to work” concept of quiet quitting.
(What are these people trying to do…make me look good?)
(I think my kids “quiet quit” on me long ago!)

DOG’S LIFE:

Every dog has his day, and International Dog Day was on Friday. Here are a few things we picked up while celebrating with our mutt, ‘Askem’ (It’s great when someone asks me what my dog’s name is…):
⇒ Dog owners tend to take bigger risks and respond more to reward-oriented advertisements. Cat owners, on the other hand, are more cautious and more likely to react to ads emphasizing risk aversion, according to a study. The research, published in the Journal of Marketing, determined that these effects occur because people form mental associations of pets’ stereotypical temperaments and personalities (many dogs are eager and happy-go-lucky, many cats are more cautious). As a result, upon exposure to dogs or cats, these associations rise to the top of the mind and influence people’s decisions and behaviors. (Is it bad if I decide to expect my dog to be rich?)
⇒ Many dog owners like to leave the radio on when they leave home, in hopes it soothes Fido, and helps to keep him company. But a new study has found that dogs may prefer silent treatment. In a study by the Animal Behaviour Centre at Queen’s University in Belfast, 60 dogs were isolated in a room on their own for 30 minutes. They were either left in silence; with Mozart music playing, or an audiobook of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”.  Analysis of the dogs’ behaviour found very little evidence to suggest either audio made a difference, with Mozart performing marginally better than Potter’s exploits at Hogwarts. The study’s authors concluded: “Auditory stimulation in the form of either classical music or audiobooks harbours little welfare advantage in situations where dogs are separated from their owners…and it is “possible” dogs may benefit more from peace and quiet than listening to an audiobook or Mozart.” (Same…)

NEW GOOD NEWS:
➢ A boss has given all his 431 employees a handsome pay rise to help them with Britain’s sky-rocketing energy bills. Daron Hutt, managing director at phone system company 4Com, generously gave staff a £200 (US $236) monthly pay increase to address the inflation many of his employees were battling with. He said of what he’s calling the “Energy Support Bonus”: “We’re in a position where we can help offset some of the price rises that are clearly coming.” It was predicted last month that energy bills would continue to spike above £2,000 (US $2,363). (Nice. The only “Energy Support Bonus” we’ve ever seen around here is the odd free coffee!)
➢ A blind woman who regained her vision says her husband is “even more handsome” than she imagined. 24-year-old Sophia Corah of New Mexico suddenly woke up with poor eyesight in May 2017 was declared legally blind a few months later. She went to Adams State University in Colorado to study psychology, and met Christian Corah. They became close friends – and Christian researched her condition, and discovered a surgery which would mean Sophia could see again. After fundraising $20,000 for the operation, her vision was restored in Aug. 2019, and the pair eventually got married. Sophia says when she saw Christian for the first time, he was definitely handsome, but she fell in love for “him as a person” not his “good looks.”

THE KEYS TO ACHIEVING GOALS AND A HAPPIER, HEALTHIER LIFE:
Perhaps you need this on a Monday — these are the results of compiling a number of studies that looked at the ever-elusive quest not only for success at work, but success in personal contentment…
1. Agreeableness:  It can improve your job performance, and your state of mind. (It’s also a sign of intelligence. Tell that to a politician sometime!)
2. Who you know:  4 in 5 people agree that no matter how hard they work, others with better business connections have the advantage. (On the other hand, I believe I have a DISadvantage if someone knows ME…)
3. Reconnecting to work:  It’s important to disconnect from work at the end of the day, but just as important to head into work the next day with the right mindset for a productive day.
4. Playing video games:  Yup. A study found that nearly half of people credit many of their successes in life to playing video games. (Is there a chance that the ONLY success these people have ever had was in playing video games?)
5. Exercising a lot:  Those who work out 4-7 times per week report much higher levels of happiness (75% vs. 25%) and success (74% vs. 26%) then those who work out 1-3 times per week. (That’s a LOTTA laundry, though…)
6. Being unsuccessful:  A study of small business owners found that being unsuccessful is an important part in learning how to become successful. (Nailed it!)
7. Money:  Research shows that when one views wealth and material possessions as measures of success, they enjoy greater levels of satisfaction. But viewing money as a direct source of happiness doesn’t bring the same effect.
8. Checking your email less:  Office workers are a lot more productive when they are interrupted fewer times each day by checking email. (‘Splain that to the boss next time he asks why you haven’t responded to his urgent email yet…)
9. Owning a pet:  People who own pets are happier, earn more money, and exercise more frequently than those who don’t. (They’re also known to clean their carpet more often…)
10. Supportive relationships:  People who have strong, supportive relationships feel more confident in themselves and are more prone to personal growth.
11. Keeping your eyes on the prize:  This is about being patient and able to save money toward a goal, rather than spending all you have right now for instant gratification. (Tried that once. Worst 15 minutes of my life!)

DID YOU KNOW?
A woman who rented a car in Toronto was charged $8,000 after the company claimed she drove nearly the distance of the Earth’s circumference in 3 days. Giovanna Boniface rented a car from Avis, traveling a total of about 300km (186 miles) over 3 days. When she accessed her credit card statement, she found the company had charged her for driving 36,482 km at a rate of 25 cents per km. Boniface calculated that she would have had to drive for 72 hours straight at approximately 500 km/h for this to be possible. It wasn’t until days later, when media got involved, that she was notified the mileage charges would be refunded. (It’s also impossible because NO ONE would be able to pay for that much gasoline these days!)
