The BS Press!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ “Game of Thrones” Oreos are coming just as fast as winter. The official Oreo Instagram account teased that a brand-new cookie is coming just in time for Thrones’ final season. The new Oreos are part of a partnership between Nabisco and the HBO series and will “be out sometime before the debut of the final season on April 14.” While the Game of Thrones-inspired cookies will be of the original Oreo variety, the food blogging account claims that there will be multiple package designs, including one that bears the names of the different houses.
(I guess they’re going to milk this thing for all it’s worth!)

★ The makers of “Fortnite” are once again being sued for allegedly stealing a dance move for the video game, this time by two men who claim they popularized the “Running Man.” Jaylen Brantley and Jared Nickens claim they made the dance move go viral and even went on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” to show it off. They are suing for damages in excess of $5,000,000.

★ Steven Avery, the subject of the Netflix docu-series “Making a Murderer,” has won the right to appeal his murder conviction stemming from the 2005 death of photographer Teresa Halbach. Avery, who is currently serving a life sentence, won a motion to appeal due to suspected human bones that were found in a gravel pit. His attorney claims that the bones were given to Halbach’s family, and were not tested for DNA, in violation of the law.

★ Jenna Bush Hager will join Hoda Kotb as the permanent co-host of the “Today” show’s fourth hour. She will replace long-time co-host Kathie Lee Gifford, who announced in December that she is stepping down. Bush Hager, the 37-year-old daughter of former President George W. Bush, will join “Today” in April.

★ Nicollette Sheridan is exiting “Dynasty”. In a statement, CBS said that Sheridan’s “reign as Alexis Carrington has come to an end in order to focus on some personal family responsibilities.”  Her role in The CW’s Dynasty as the fashionably scheming Alexis might be recast, but that’s still to be determined. Sheridan’s final appearance will be next month. The original Alexis was played by Joan Collins in the 1980s version of the show, who made the character an icon.

Cara will join him on his US, UK and Europe tour stops. Shawn Mendes: The Tour kicks off March 7 in Europe.
• Nicki Minaj — is denying all allegations of wrongdoing in the case brought by Tracy Chapman.  Chapman claims Minaj sampled her song ‘Baby Can I Hold You’ on a track with Nas titled ‘Sorry’. • Walker McGuire — have announced that they are breaking up.  The duo posted, “We regret to inform everyone we’ve decided to end Walker McGuire.”  They have not offered an explanation for the split, but encouraged fans to follow their solo Instagram pages at @jordanwalker2 and @mcguirejohn.
• Cole Swindell – hopes to one day own his own bar like Dierks Bentley and Luke Bryan, but says, “I got a long way to go before I’m there.”  He says for the time being, he’ll enjoy the other guys’ places until he is at a level where he can do that.  He does, however, already have a name for his bar: “Cole in the Wall.”
• Reba McEntire – told Andy Cohen last week that she was originally offered the role of the “Unsinkable” Molly Brown in the 1997 blockbuster “Titanic”. McEntire explained that she had to turn down the opportunity due to the fact that the movie’s filming schedule and her own touring plans just didn’t line up.

IT’S ABOUT TIME:
Just like the weather, many of us complain about the twice per year time change, but no one does anything about it.  Except, maybe, in New Mexico.  Lawmakers there are considering a proposal to stop changing the clocks in spring and fall and leave things be.  The problem is that some people in neighboring states seem to have a problem with it.  The senate bill would keep the state in Daylight Saving Time year-round, which means that from Nov. 3 to March 10, Las Cruces would be one hour ahead of El Paso, which is right next door.  And you can only imagine the gong show that could result for people trying to conduct business in the area.  Keep in mind, though, that in Canada, the entire province of Saskatchewan does not observe Daylight Saving Time, and life seems to go on for them…and their neighbors.
(What would be awesome is if they went metric at the same time!)
(Wouldn’t it be great, though, if the clock on your microwave was correct ALL YEAR LONG?)
(Not having to change the clocks twice per year would “save time”…literally!)

THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE AREN’T FREE:
Yes, of course having children can bring untold joy to your household.  It can fill that void in your life and give your life meaning and a sense of purpose.  Unless you’re broke.  A new study looked into the amount of joy that children bring into people’s lives, and found that although for many, children do exactly that:  bring happiness to their parents’ lives.  But when you take into account financial woes, children actually reduce happiness. No fault of the kids, of course.  Although this might not be a revelation for anyone who is forced to pay today’s shockingly high rates for big-city daycare, a spokesman for Dartmouth College, which conducted the research, said that the paper was the first to clearly show how finances weigh heavily on parents’ well-being.
(Not MY parents.  Even though they didn’t have much money, they always made sure that I had the best…hand-me-downs…)

THE WORLD’S SHORTEST IQ TEST:
The Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT) was developed by a psychologist who picked these three questions because they were all “found to yield impulsive erroneous responses.”  Here we go . . .

1.  A bat and a ball together cost $1.10. The bat costs $1 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?
2.  If it takes five machines 5 minutes to make five widgets, how long would it take 100 machines to make 100 widgets?
3.  There is a patch of lily pads in a lake. Every day, the patch doubles in size. If it takes 48 days for the patch to cover the entire lake, how long would it take for the patch to cover half the lake?

ANSWERS:
1. 5 cents
2. 5 minutes
3. 47 days
(I know I feel stupider…)

THE BEST MOVIE SOUNDTRACKS EVER:
1. Pulp Fiction (1994): Tarantino definitely has a way with movie music.  Feat. ‘Girl, You’ll be a Woman Soon’ – Urge Overkill

2. Help! (1965):  Fascinating snapshot of The Beatles at a crucial moment in their evolution. Feat. ‘Yesterday’.

4. Rushmore (1998): A love letter to lost youth that plays like a mixtape.  Feat. ‘Ooh La La’- Faces

5. Lost in Translation (2003): When Bill Murray sings a terrible rendition of Roxy Music’s ‘More Than This’, it is enough to move the listener to tears.  Feat. ‘Just Like Honey’ – The Jesus and Mary Chain

6. Do the Right Thing (1989): Public Enemy’s ‘Fight the Power’ was written for the film, and it is used 15 times in the movie… Feat. ‘Can’t Stand It – Steel Pulse (And ‘Fight the Power’!!)

7. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968): A soundtrack cobbled together from classic classical compositions, and they sound as if they were written for the film. Feat. ‘Lux Aeterna’ – György Ligeti (You’d know it if you heard it…)

8. The Harder They Come (1972): A cult classic that did wonders for popularizing reggae. Feat. ‘You Can Get it if You Really Want’ – Jimmy Cliff

9. Trainspotting (1996): Brian Eno’s ‘Deep Blue Day’ transformed a dive down the worst toilet in the world into a transcendental reverie. Feat. ‘Deep Blue Day’ – Brian Eno and ‘Lust for Life’ – Iggy Pop

10. Purple Rain (1984): With ‘The Beautiful Ones’, ‘When Doves Cry’, and ‘Purple Rain’ in it, the surrounding 90 minutes could have just featured Prince dry-cleaning his scarves, and the film would still be a masterpiece. Feat. all those, plus ‘Let’s Go Crazy’ and ‘I Would Die 4 U’ – Prince
(What soundtrack did you buy without ever having seen the movie?)

DID YOU KNOW?
Scientists think they have answered the age-old question of why zebras have stripes. It appears stripes make terrible landing strips, bamboozling the fierce blood-sucking flies that try to feast on zebras and carry deadly diseases.  Research shows that horse flies have a difficult time landing on zebras, but can easily land on uniformly-colored horses.

No one knows the origin for sure but there was a fairytale in 18th-century France about a ‘tooth mouse’ who hid under pillows. • “International Repetitive Strain Injuries Awareness Day”, the 19th annual, sponsored by the Industrial Accident Prevention Association. The organization notes that while it takes a worker an average 47 days to recover from a broken bone, a worker suffering from an ‘RSI’, such as tendinitis or carpal tunnel syndrome, takes an average 52 days or 71 days, respectively.

• “Chili Day”, observed annually on the last Thursday of February. It’s a great excuse to put together a perfect pot of spicy chili. What’s your secret ingredient?
