★ Liam Neeson says he’s retiring from action films…again. In an interview, the star of the “Taken” series of movies was asked whether the time has come for him to take a step back. His response: “Oh, yeah. I think so. I’m 68 and a half. 69 this year.” He went on to say that there are “a couple more” action films he plans to do this year, “hopefully, Covid allowing us…and, then I think that will probably be it.” Although he’s decided to leave the genre, he admitted that he’ll miss “beating up guys half my age”. Fans may recall Neeson making a similar announcement in 2015, then backtracking 2 years later, when he was quoted as saying: “I’m going to be doing action movies until they bury me in the ground.”

★ The Ottawa Senators NHL team saluted a beloved Canadian, late “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek, with a moment of silence before their season-opening game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday night. During the pre-game salute in which Trebek was hailed as a “Canadian icon,” it was noted that the hockey-lover celebrated his induction as a member of the Order of Canada in 2017 at a Senators home game. Trebek often mentioned his Canadian roots in his chats with “Jeopardy!” contestants and had appeared during All-Star Game events and at the NHL Awards.

★ Dwayne Johnson sparked excitement among fans on Saturday with a surprise announcement. He dropped the first trailer for “Young Rock”, the upcoming NBC series about his life. Johnson posted the clip on his Instagram one day after commemorating the one-year anniversary of his father Rocky Johnson’s death. Young Rock will premiere on Feb. 16. ★ Russell Crowe is defending one of his movies, nearly 20 years after it was released. Ian McNabb, frontman for 1980s band The Icicle Works — recommended Crowe’s 2003 seafaring adventure “Master and Commander” as a cure for insomnia, tweeting that he’d never been able to “make it past the 10-minute mark.” Crowe clapped back, writing: “That’s the problem with kids these days. No focus. Peter Weir’s film is brilliant…Definitely an adults movie.” (“Kids”? For the record, McNabb is 60. Crowe? 56.)

• Post Malone — is donating 10,000 of his sold-out “Duet Max Clog II” Crocs to frontline healthcare workers at 70 US hospitals.
• Demi Lovato – claimed to have spotted “another” UFO in a Sat. Instagram video. In it a voice that sounds like hers says: “Another day, another UFO sighting”, as the camera follows unidentified lights in the sky. She recently shared her interest in aliens in a podcast conversation with Kesha.
• Mariah Carey – says that having virtually the entire year off in 2020 due to the pandemic has been tremendously helpful for her voice. Quote: “Not having to sing for my supper and travel around and not get the right amount of sleep or just be put on this thing where there’s a certain amount of stress, for me, that takes away a lot of stuff.”
• Rod Stewart – revealed in an interview one of the more unusual onstage tributes he has experienced. While performing in Vegas, a pair of men’s underwear landed on the stage, and “They were really horrible.” He went on to explain that his wife “hid in the audience and threw a pair of men’s undies up.” He also pointed out that it’s normally female undergarments that are thrown onstage while he sings.
• Heart – Guitarist Nancy Wilson has written a song “dedicated to Eddie Van Halen”. The instrumental, called ‘For Edward’, will appear on her upcoming solo album, reportedly titled “You and Me”, scheduled for release later this year.
• Barry Gibb – The former Bee Gee has scored his first solo UK #1 album with “Greenfields: The Gibb Brothers’ Songbook (Vol. 1)”. It’s a collection of country interpretations of Bee Gees hits, featuring collaborations with the likes of Dolly Parton Keith Urban and Little Big Town.
• Blake Shelton – Says he’d like to lose 20 pounds before he his wedding to Gwen Stefani. Speaking to his friend Luke Bryan on Bryan’s Apple Music Show, Party Barn Radio, Shelton joked that he “readjusted all the mirrors in the house” due to his quarantine weight gain, because he can’t stand to look at himself in the mirror.
• Dolly Parton — We already have Dollywood, and now a Tennessee lawmaker is proposing a Dolly Parton statue, and it’s getting a ton of traction on social media. More than 25,000 have people signed a petition to replace one of the many statues of Confederate officers littering the state with one immortalizing a “true Tennessee hero”.

CLIMBNG THE SOCIAL (DISTANCING) LADDER:
A study says thanks to better health care access, job stability and a cushy home, the wealthy are socially distancing at higher rates than low-income households. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University found that people making more than $230,000 per year are up to 54% more likely to engage in pandemic safety measures, such as wearing masks or maintaining distance from others, compared to those who bring in around $13,000 annually. The survey of 1,000 Americans asked participants to describe how their life had changed since the beginning of the pandemic. While almost all respondents noted some changes in the interest of safety, higher earners were 32% more likely to socially distance and 30% more likely to wash their hands often and wear masks. Researchers also found that higher-earners are more likely to have the option of working from home. It’s thought these findings could help epidemiologists predict spread and help inform pandemic policy.
(And which group do you think will get the vaccine first?)
(Believe me, people who make that kind of money socially distanced themselves from me LONG before the pandemic!)

CAT SCRATCH TEACHER:
A cat behavioral expert says most of us are petting our cats completely wrong. Dr. Lauren Finka of Nottingham Trent University says although some cats may enjoy the traditional “human” way of stroking a cat: starting behind the head and continuing through to the base of the tail, a lot of kitties don’t enjoy that. They’re probably just being tolerant because of the other benefits you bring to the relationship, such as food, treats and attention. Finka admits that there isn’t a lot of science on the subject, but her limited research has shown that although people think cats like being stroked down to the base of their tail, this can actually produce the most negative behavioral responses from cats. So, how should we pet a cat? She says it depends very much on the individual animal, and the only way to know for sure is to pay attention to its body language, and look for signs she is enjoying it, such as purring, kneading and gentle tail waving.
(And remember, with a cat, what she loved yesterday, she may HATE today!)

AN HONEST MEIN:
A Chinese restaurant in Montreal has gone viral, thanks to its honest menu. Feigang Fei, the owner of “Aunt Dai” restaurant, says the food he serves is pretty good, but not perfect, and he’s not afraid to let customers know in his menu item descriptions. Examples: Beside the orange beef, it says: “not that good — but it’s your call.” The sauté beef is a new item, and, as Fei puts it: “I didn’t have the chance to try it yet.” He also lets patrons know that he’s not a big fan of the sweet and spicy pork strips, saying “it’s very tasty, but not the same as ones I had in China.” Fei has been writing the blurbs on his menu for years, but it went viral last week, when a Twitter user wrote: “Aunt Dai is my favourite Chinese restaurant in Montreal, but the REAL treat is the menu, featuring extremely honest commentary from the owner.” In a few days, the tweet garnered tens of thousands of likes and retweets. What should you order if you ever have the chance to visit? Might I suggest the Singapore Noodles? According to the menu, “It has curry flavor, so don’t expect it to be SO tasty, but it’s a safe choice and make you happy.”
(His menu might be MOSTLY honest, but I still have a hard time believing that a chicken fried the rice!)

☞ Early maturity: Both parents’ genetics play a part in when exactly you start the big change known as puberty. (Good to know. Now when does my voice STOP cracking?)
☞ Your laugh lines: How well you age and how much you show is determined on a cellular level by the accumulation of damage over your lifetime to your mitochondrial DNA—genes you only get from your mom. Of course, environmental factors play a large roll as well. (So does Mariah Carey…because, just like her, I’m trying to avoid wrinkles by not laughing or smiling!)

As if it’s not enough that snakes can slither, sidewind, swim on top of water, jump and glide between trees. Now, scientists have found a new way for them to get to you: climbing like a lasso. Researchers from Colorado State University and the University of Cincinnati inadvertently made the discovery while working on the conservation of Micronesian starlings in Guam. They had installed tall metal cylinders known as baffles to prevent snakes from climbing up to bird boxes. But the author of the study says he and a colleague witnesses a brown tree snake “form what looked like a lasso around the cylinder and wiggle its body up.”
