He’s already nominated for the best actor award for his role as ‘Rudy Ray Moore’ in Netflix’s “Dolemite is My Name.” Some of Murphy’s other hits include “48 Hours,” “Trading Places,” “Coming to America,” “Harlem Nights,” “The Nutty Professor” and the voice of Donkey in the “Shrek” franchise.

★ “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek is thinking about his departure from the game show and says he has already rehearsed his final goodbye. Quote: “It’ll be a significant moment for me…what I would do on that day is tell the director, ‘’Time the show down to leave me 30 seconds at the end. That’s all I want.’ Trebek says he’ll use that time to say his goodbyes and to tell people: ‘Don’t ask me who’s going to replace me because I have no say whatsoever. But I’m sure that if you give them the same love and attention and respect that you have shown me… then they will be a success and the show will continue being a success. And until we meet again, God bless you and goodbye.'”

★ Teri Garr has been hospitalized after suffering a medical emergency. Garr, who is known for her roles on “Tootsie”, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and “Young Frankenstein”, was rushed to hospital on Monday. Her rep says the actress is “fine” and suffered some “confusion” as a result of “dehydration.” Garr was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999 and suffered a brain aneurysm in 2006 that left her in a coma for weeks. She eventually returned to acting but retired in 2011. She is 75.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Lady Gaga — On Saturday night, while performing her Vegas “Enigma” show, she hinted that she’s extending her residency. Video shows her telling the crowd “I’ll be here for another year.” She then flashed two fingers and added, “Two, probably.”
• Justin Bieber — YouTube, the platform where he got his start, has announced a docuseries about him. The 10-episode “Justin Bieber: Seasons” will take viewers inside the making of Bieber’s upcoming album. He is the most subscribed artist on YouTube, with 47.5 million.
• Pete Townshend – says he turned down the chance to create the soundtrack for the 1982 science fiction classic “Blade Runner”. He says he read the script and thought ‘this is rubbish’. As Townshend puts it now, and it was…Blade Runner.”
• David Lee Roth — almost ruined a marriage by giving out an old phone number to women. Author Nancy French claims that not long after her wedding, she became suspicious of the number of calls from mysterious women her husband David was receiving. They soon discovered that he had Roth’s old number, which he had been handing it out to women whom he wanted to let down easy.
• Judas Priest — Frontman Rob Halford will release his autobiography “Confess” on October 20. Expect a compelling and honest look at the struggles he has faced with addiction and his sexuality as well as exploring his music and his many brushes with controversy.
• Carrie Underwood – says she’s done hosting the Country Music Awards after 12 years.  She posted on Instagram that “It’s hard to imagine topping what we have accomplished together, so I’ve decided that it’s time to pass the hosting torch (at least for now!)…” Underwood says she has “so many exciting things coming in the new year and beyond.”
• The Highwomen – made Barack Obama’s “Favorite Music of 2019” list. Their debut single ‘Redesigning Women’ appear on the 44th president of the United States’ annual year-end list alongside songs like Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus’ ‘Old Town Road’, Lizzo’s ‘Juice’, and Beyoncé’s ‘Mood 4 Evah’.

PREDICTIONS ABOUT THE YEAR 2020 (from way back when…):
☞ Human feet will become one big toe:  In a 1911 lecture at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, surgeon Richard Clement Lucas said that the “useless outer toes” will become used less and less, so that “man might become a one-toed race.” (‘This little piggy’ isn’t so little anymore!)
☞ We’ll have ape chauffeurs:  In 1994, the RAND Corporation, a global think tank that’s contributed to the space program and the development of the internet, said they expected us to have animal employees by the year 2020. (Although my dog DOES drive me crazy sometimes…)
☞ Flying houses:  Arthur C. Clarke — who wrote “2001: A Space Odyssey” — believed that houses of the future would have nothing keeping them on the ground and they would be able to move to anywhere on earth on a whim. In fact, he even suggested that whole communities would be able to fly south for winter. (At least you’d never forget to pack something…)
☞ C, X and Q will be eliminated:  In 1900, John Elfreth Watkins Jr., the curator of mechanical technology at the Smithsonian Institution, predicted that those three letters would become unnecessary. He said that by now, we’d be spelling mostly by sound and would communicate with “condensed words”. (So, he predicted texting?)
☞ No more coffee, tea or tobacco:  In 1937, Nikola Tesla predicted that “within a century, coffee, tea, and tobacco will be no longer be in vogue.” He wrote that “It will simply be no longer fashionable to poison the system with harmful ingredients.” (Not until someone comes up with something better!)
☞ All roads will become tubes:  A 1957 Popular Mechanics article said that every street in America will be “replaced by a network of pneumatic tubes.” Your car would only need power to get from your home to the nearest tube. Then, “they will be pneumatically powered to any desired destination.” (I think Elon Musk is working on this…)
☞ Nobody will work, and we’ll all be rich:  In 1966, Time magazine predicted that “machines will be producing so much that everyone will be independently wealthy.” Without lifting a finger, the average family could expect to earn a salary of $30,000 – $40,000. That’d be around $300,000 now. (Thanks to automation, we’re at least on the way to nobody working…)
☞ We’ll eat candy made of underwear:  The New York Times’ longtime science editor Waldemar Kaempffert wrote in 1950 that it would be possible to take ordinary objects like old table linens and “rayon underwear” and bring them to “chemical factories to be converted into candy.” (Whatever you’re into, Waldemar!)

THE HOLIDAY IS OVER:
All that lounging around that you enjoyed over the holidays just might come back to haunt you. A study by the University of Liverpool found that healthy adults who restricted their physical activity for two weeks experienced physiological changes to their bodies that researchers think might be irreversible. Study participants, who were instructed to reduce their physical activity to 1,500 steps per day for 14 days, experienced an increase in fat levels in their muscles of 20-28%, and a decrease in leg strength of 5-8%. Efficiency of the cardio and respiratory systems also dropped 5-10%.  Based on their findings, researchers warn that even a short period of inactivity could result in long-term and even permanent damage the body.
(Fortunately, I made dozens of trips to the kitchen each day over the holidays…)
(Umm…did that say DECREASE to 1,500 steps per day?)
(We thought we’d start the year off on the right note for you there!)

TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR RESOLUTIONS:
⇒ Be Realistic:  The surest way to fall short of your goal is to make it unattainable. For instance, resolving to NEVER eat your favorite food again is setting you up to fail. Try avoiding it more often than you do now.
⇒ Outline Your Plan:  Decide how you will deal with the temptation to skip that exercise class or have that piece of cake. This could include calling on a friend for help, practicing positive thinking, or reminding yourself how your “bad behavior” will affect your goal.
⇒ Make a “Pros” and “Cons” List:  Seeing it on paper may help to keep your motivation strong. Develop it over time, and keep it handy.
⇒ Talk About it:  Tell friends and family members who will be there to support you. Ideally, find a buddy who shares your New Year’s resolution and motivate each other.
⇒ Reward Yourself:  Celebrate your success by treating yourself to something you enjoy that doesn’t contradict your resolution. If you have been sticking to your promise to eat better, reward yourself with new fitness clothing or by going to a movie with a friend. (But no extra butter on that popcorn!)
⇒ Track Your Progress:  Keep track of each small success. Short-term goals are easier to keep, and each small accomplishment can keep you motivated. Instead of focusing on losing 30 pounds, focus on losing the first five.
⇒ Stick to It:  It takes about 21 days for a new activity to become a habit and six months for it to become part of your personality. Be persistent and patient.
⇒ Keep Trying:  If you blow it, start over again! Recommit yourself for 24 hours.
(Or just try again next year…)

DID YOU KNOW?
Ageing isn’t one long, continuous process that moves at the same speed throughout our lives. New research suggests the body seems to shift gears three times during our lifespans, in terms of biological ageing – with the key thresholds being at ages 34, 60 and 78. (And New Year’s morning, judging by the way I felt…)

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Swiss Cheese Day”, like all cheeses, Swiss cheese is made using particular bacteria cultures. During the aging process, this bacterium gives off carbon dioxide, which forms gas bubbles inside the cheese. Eventually these gas bubbles leave holes in the cheese, which cheesemakers call “eyes.”

• “Cream Puff Day”, honoring the baked puff pastry shells stuffed with a sweet and rich filling. They originated in Europe in the 1540s when they were created for France’s Henry II.

• “Happy Mew Year”, because cats insist on holidays all their own.

• “Motivation & Inspiration Day”. You’re going to need some in order to keep that New Year’s resolution!

• “Personal Trainer Awareness Day”, honoring the folks who make it easier to achieve the most common New Year’s resolution … to lose weight and maintain a permanent healthy lifestyle.

• “National Buffet Day”, Well!  That should put an end to a lot of New Year’s resolutions!
A buffet of buffet facts:
➢ The concept arose in mid-17th century France, when gentleman callers would arrive unexpectedly at the homes of ladies they wanted to woo.
➢ It was during the expansion of railroads throughout Europe that the smorgasbord buffet increased in popularity.
➢ In 1939 at the New York World’s Fair exhibition, the Swedes used a smorgasbord to showcase the best of Swedish food.
➢ The all-you-can-eat buffet made its restaurant debut in 1946, when it was introduced by Vegas hotel manager Herb MacDonald.
➢ By the mid-1960s, virtually every casino in Las Vegas sported its own variation.
➢ Today the casino buffet costs a bit more than the average $1.50 price of the 1960s, but continue to be one of the best deals in Vegas.

BS REALISTIC NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS:

• Exercise regularly . . . for the first two weeks of January
• Get out of the house at least twice
• Wake up by noon every day
• Gain 20 pounds
• Make time to work on my procrastination

• Be more realistic
