★ Two private planes owned by Elvis Presley are up for sale. The ‘Lisa Marie’, named after his daughter, was refurbished in 1975 to include a master suite, conference room, bathroom with gold taps, and a stereo system with 50 speakers. Neither it nor the ‘Hound Dog II’ is airworthy but both have been on display at Graceland for over 30 years. They’re being sold off by Julien’s Auction House via sealed bids through February 3rd. The planes are being auctioned as one lot, with the option to buy land next to Graceland to display them. The new owner of Graceland, Authentic Brands Group, has decided to offload them.

★ The annual nominations for the “Golden Raspberry Awards” for worst cinema of the year aren’t due to be unveiled until January 14th, but thanks to a leak we already know who’s up for ‘honors’. Unsurprisingly, “Transformers: Age of Extinction” leads all others with 9 nods, including ‘Worst Film’, ‘Worst Director’ (Michael Bay), ‘Worst Sequel’, ‘Worst Screenplay’, and ‘Worst Supporting Actor & Actress’ (Kelsey Grammar, Nicola Peltz, Sophie Miles). Also nominated for ‘Worst Film’: “A Million Ways to Die In the West”, “Sex Tape”, and “The Interview”. The ‘winners’ are announced in February.

• “Frozen” – “Let It Go” was 2014’s most popular song among karaoke crooners, accounting for 15% of the 3.5 million songs sung by users of Lucky Voice Online Karaoke, well ahead of the nearest rival … “Happy” by Pharrell Williams.
• Kanye West – A surprise release on iTunes and West’s website on New Year’s Day, the new single “Only One” has already reached #3 on sales charts. The ode to Kanye’s daughter North is the first of his musical collaborations with Paul McCartney.
• Little Jimmy Dickens – Short in stature, but long casting a shadow as an ambassador of country music, the 4′-11″ entertainer died Friday at age 94 in Nashville of cardiac arrest. He had been a member of the Grand Ole Opry since 1948.
• Madonna – 14 more tracks from her upcoming album “Rebel Heart” have leaked online. Amongst the most recent leak is a collaboration with Pharrell Williams called “Back That Up (Do It)”. The ongoing leaks may pull forward the album’s planned March release date.
• Rihanna – “World Peace” may or may not be the first official track off of her rumored upcoming album “#R8”, but the newly leaked demo may become the first unofficial club banger of the year.
• Taylor Swift – “1989” was 2014’s top-selling album in North America, moving a total of 3.66 million units. That edged out the “Frozen” soundtrack at 3.53 million.
• U2 – Frontman Bono reveals he may never play the guitar again after damaging his elbow in that high-speed bicycle accident back in November. He says recovery has been much tougher than anticipated. You would not be alone in failing to realize that Bono actually played guitar.

A TEXT & A SNORT:
Nesta, the ‘innovation charity that helps bring great ideas to life’, has declared scent transmission via smartphone one of its top 10 predictions for 2015. It’s already technically possible to send the aroma of, say, freshly-baked bread, using an attachment called ‘Scentee’.  And Nesta predicts this is the year the technology really takes off. It involves plugging a gizmo into a smartphone’s headphone socket which uses alcohol-based aroma cartridges to emit a puff of vapor when triggered by a signal. Scientists are already working on a way of avoiding the need to use chemicals and cartridges to achieve the same goal. (Does this idea stink?)

BEWARE THE LOOM:
Doctors are warning parents of the need to be vigilant after a spate of children have shown up in ERs with popular loom bands … stuck up their noses. Although medics can usually get them out, there is a real risk that children could choke on them. The tiny colorful rubber bands, which can be woven to make bracelets, have become a popular craze over the past year or so. While it’s quite common for kids to turn up at hospitals with small objects lodged in noses or ears, it’s only recently that a problem with loom bands has arisen. The danger often involves inserting one of the S-shaped hooks used to complete loom bands into the nose. ‘Rainbow Loom’, the plastic device for weaving the small bands, was invented in 2011. ORIGINS OF POPULAR SPORTS:
• Baseball – Based on the English game of rounders, it was Alexander Cartwright who, with members of NYC’s Knickerbocker Baseball Club, first came up with the modern version by designing the diamond-shaped field and the first set of rules in 1845.
• Basketball – Invented in 1891 by Canadian phys-ed teacher James Naismith while working at the Springfield, Massachusetts YMCA. Remembering a childhood game called ‘duck-on-a-rock’, he developed a set of 13 rules that gave origin to the game of basketball.
• Football – Derived from the English game of rugby, the rules were devised by Yale U coach Walter Camp in 1879 (‘Father of American Football’). The 1st pro player was ‘Pudge’ Heffelfinger who signed a $500-contract to play for the Allegheny Athletic Association in 1892.
• Hockey – Early 1800s paintings show ‘shinney’ being played on frozen ponds in Nova Scotia. Canadian James George Creighton is believed to have organized the game in 1875 and helped to popularize it. The first recorded indoor hockey match took place in Montréal that same year.
