Bully For You!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Kevin Hart says it’s still not out of the realm of possibilities that he’ll be the host of the Academy Awards, but it doesn’t look like it’s happening this year. Hart says he loves the academy and everyone involved, but “this year was a tricky year.” Hart does say, though, that “maybe in the future” it will work out. He is currently promoting his new movie, “The Upside.”

★ Amazon just dropped the first trailer for its Lorena Bobbitt docuseries, and it’s going to have you counting down the days until it airs. As a refresher, in 1993, Lorena sliced off her husband John’s penis in the middle of the night. The series has four parts, and promises to shed new light one of the most “sensationalized” tabloid stories ever.
(I’m going to go right ahead and say that it would have been in poor taste to make it in two parts!)
-Cosmopolitan
★ HBO’s boss has teased what to expect from the final season of “Game of Thrones”.  CEO Richard Plepler says he was “in awe” while watching the “spectacular” last episodes. The long-running series will draw to a close this year with six final episodes, and Plepler says that each one is like a movie. Game of Thrones season 8 will premiere in April 2019.
-MSN
★ John Travolta has tried on a lot of different looks through the years, but none has surprised people more than going out with a shaved head. The “Saturday Night Fever” legend showed off his chrome dome on Instagram, while looking dapper with a bow tie and holding a martini. Travolta has been the subject of much scrutiny over his flowing locks and hairpieces over the years — but it seems the internet is all compliments about his shaved head.
-Yahoo
★ Ryan Reynolds is the new face of Armani Code fragrances. He’ll star in an advertising campaign for the Italian fashion house.  Founder Giorgio Armani says that Reynolds was chosen to represent the brand because he ”perfectly embodies the modern sensuality of the Armani Code man: someone with charisma, authenticity, an effortless style, and the right dose of irony.”
(Plus he’ll sell a wack cologne for them!)

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Cardi B – will play the 2019 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival.  Also on the bill:  Phish, Post Malone, Childish Gambino, Solange and more.  Bonaroo returns to Manchester, Tennessee June 13-16 and will also feature an all-star Grand Ole Opry headlining set with special guests.
• Robbie Williams — has swapped cigarettes for crayons. He says he has found that colouring is helping him in his efforts to quit smoking.  As he puts it, “I’m just doing some colouring in, which is good because I’ve got something to concentrate on.  Art is good for my mind.”
• Ryan Adams — will release three new albums this year, starting with upcoming LP “Big Colours”. He says that he just wants to make music that moves him and get it out to his fans because “Songs are gifts.  Music heals”.
• David Bowie – his earliest known versions of ‘Space Oddity’ will be released for the song’s 50th anniversary as part of a collection of rare demos called “Spying Through A Keyhole”. The 7” vinyl box set will feature nine demos and will be released this spring. (***See “Today’s Music Events”, below***)
• Robert Plant – After he tweeted a pic of himself and guitarist Nile Rodgers in a studio with a caption referencing a Honeydrippers reunion, fans are wondering if it could be true. The two worked together on the original Honeydrippers’ 1984 EP, which contained the hit ‘Sea of Love”.
• The Who – Singer Roger Daltrey still hopes to oversee a film about late drummer Keith Moon, but he is proceeding cautiously.  He says he wants to be sure they make a “movie” and not a “biopic”.
• Rockwell – The ‘Somebody’s Watching Me’ is being sued by a woman who says he beat her with a chair at a Hollywood hotel. The son of Motown legend Berry Gordy was taken into custody and charged with a felony following the Nov 29 incident.
• Kane Brown – says he didn’t invest in a fancy stereo system for his new truck because it already cost more than his October wedding to Katelyn Jae.  The vehicle, originally built as a show truck, still has some attractive features.  Such as?  “A 19-and-a-half-inch lift, all gold underneath. The wheels are gold with a black lip around on 42-inch tires. Twenty-eight-inch wheels. White and orange LED lights, it lowers to eight inches …”
• Keith Urban – his collaboration with rapper Post Malone will be among the performances featured in the TV special “Elvis All-Star Tribute”, airing Feb. 17 on NBC.  In addition to their performance of Presley’s 1968 song ‘Baby, What You Want Me to Do’, the special will feature Carrie Underwood, Kelsea Ballerini, Darius Rucker, Little Big Town, the Pistol Annies, Dierks Bentley, Jennifer Lopez, Ed Sheeran and more.

JUICELESS JANUARY:
A popular challenge in January is to try to go the entire month without an alcoholic drink.  “Dry January” is a heavily-promoted public health initiative in the UK in which more than 4 million people have signed on in recent years.  But what if you are successful in going the entire month without a drink.  Then what?  In February, do people tend to drink all the drinks they missed?  Or does participating in Dry January benefit you in the long term?  A University of Sussex study found that while a small percentage of participants were found to experience a “rebound” effect, drinking more than they drank before, most people who finished Dry January reported drinking fewer days per week and fewer drinks per sitting after six months.  And medical tests showed improved liver function, blood pressure and markers associated with cancer, as well as an average weight loss of 4 pounds.  Those who gave up drinking for the month also reported less fatigue, and improved concentration, sleep, and ability to exercise.
(Nothing else to do…)
(I’ve never done it for the whole month, but I can tell you that historically, I am pretty dry on Jan. 1st!)
(I’m still not sure I want to risk it…)

AS A MATTER OF FACT, I’M NOT WEARING THAT TONIGHT:
It seems that people just weren’t willing to eat and bare it.  Paris’ first nude restaurant is being forced to close, yes, because it can’t put enough bums in the seats.  “O’Naturel” will shut the curtains on nude fine dining next month after just over a year, despite rave reviews from a small but loyal client base.  Before sitting down to eat, customers must leave their clothes and mobile phones in the cloakroom.  They are given slippers, although women may keep their heels on.  Wait staff is fully clothed, as required by law.
(I’m not sure that I’d like to be referred to as a member of a nude restaurant’s ‘small’ client base!)
(The thing I like about this is you’d never have to worry about what you are going to wear to dinner!)
(Guaranteed appetite suppressant!)

BACK WORDS:
You’ve seen the annual list of words “Banished from the English language”.  Now, Wayne State University is out with their list of words that we should use more often.  Here is the Wayne Word Warriors’ 2019 list of eminently useful words that should be brought back to enrich our language:
✓ Anecdoche:  A conversation in which everyone is talking, but no one is listening. (So, the ‘comment’ section on a political social media post?)
✓ Anhedonia:  Inability to feel pleasure.
✓ Coadunation:  The union (as of dissimilar substances) in one body or mass. (I don’t really see being able to work that one into a sentence…)
✓ Fubsy:  Fat and squat.  (Admit it…you just thought of Danny DeVito!)
✓ Lickpenny:  Something that uses up money. (That’s what I should have named my teenager…)
✓ Logorrhea:  Excessive and often incoherent talkativeness or wordiness. (That is NOT where I thought we were going with this one…)
✓ Salubrious:  Health-giving; healthy.
✓ Slonk:  To swallow greedily.  (Which will, of course, be our new name for staff meals…)
✓ Slugabed:  A lazy person who stays in bed late.  (I’ll take the name!  Just close the curtains and shut the door!)
✓ Trenchant:  Vigorous or incisive in expression or style.
(I’d challenge you to use all of these in a sentence, but someone would…)

DID YOU KNOW:
A new study published in JAMA Network Open says that almost half of those who believe they suffer from a food allergy are mistaken. This discrepancy suggests that many are confusing allergies with less-severe food intolerances, which typically come with minimal digestion-related symptoms.  If someone is truly allergic to a food, eating it can trigger a potentially life-threatening immune response.
