Nuthin’ Like a Bull in Your Radio Shop!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
Lindsay Lohan has been released from house arrest after 35 days, just in time for her 25th birthday tomorrow and she’s reportedly planning to celebrate in the Hamptons on Long Island NY (what date do you want in the ‘Next Bust Pool’?) . . . Movie actor Robert Pattinson just got a pie in the face – for the now-shooting David Cronenberg movie “Cosmopolis” (we hope it took 59 takes!) . . . The new “Transformers” flick is predicted to make nearly $200 million in its first 6 days (must be the riveting storyline) . . . Britain’s Prince Harry reportedly has a new girlfriend and – despite media pressure – it’s not Pippa Middleton, it’s 25-year-old sometime actress and lingerie model Florence Brudenell-Bruce (picked for her name’s snob factor?) . . . After 2 years of negotiations, actor Mel Gibson and his longtime wife Robyn have finally reached a divorce settlement (no details revealed but he was once estimated to be worth $900 million) . . . Spurned girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis’ mother says her daughter is ‘very down in the dumps’ over her split from George Clooney (ya think?) . . . The “Teen Choice” nominations have been announced and, not surprisingly, “Twilight” and “Harry Potter” are leading the pack (the hardware’s handed out August 7th) . . . And unemployed actor Charlie Sheen has now admitted he was on steroids while shooting the 1989 baseball comedy “Major League” (geez man, how to ruin your reputation!).

BS MUSIC NOTES:

• Foo Fighters – Saturday & Sunday the play 2 massive gigs at the Milton Keynes Bowl in the UK.
• Justin Moore – He tops the new “Billboard” magazine ‘Country Albums’ chart with his 2nd disc, “Outlaws Like Me”.

TODAY’S MOVIE OPENINGS:
• “Larry Crowne” ( PG-13 Dramedy ): Tom Hanks, who also directed, stars as the title character, a middle-aged man who goes back-to-school after losing his job. Julia Roberts plays the community college teacher he falls for. The last time they co-starred onscreen was in “Charlie Wilson’s War” (2007). Hanks hasn’t directed a film since 1996’s “That Thing You Do!”.

FAT CARS:
Like Americans themselves, American cars are getting heavier each year. The average new car weighed 3,221 lbs (1,464 kg) in 1987 and 4,009 lbs (1,822 kg) in 2010. Even small-size sedans have packed on pounds, thanks to more powerful – if more efficient – engines, as well as more accessories and safety features. It’s a double-edged sword – the heavier the car, the safer it is for the driver; but the more dangerous it is for others on the road. (Ever been cycling with a Hummer in your mirror?)

NO DOGS ALLOWED:
San Francisco’s Animal Control Commission is recommending that the city ban the sale of all pets, even fish, largely to fight a glut of abandoned animals at shelters and rescue centers. The ban, if adopted, would include any pet … from dachshund to gerbil to reptiles. The only live animals that could be sold are those intended for eventual human consumption, such as live fish and poultry. (Soon you’ll need a ‘meat licence’ for your Rottweiler.)
– “Los Angeles Times”

BS SOCIAL STUDIES:
• A Japanese study published in the journal “Stroke” shows that anger is a major cause of strokes. Researchers say anger rates just behind high cholesterol and age as a risk factor. (Another reason to chill, man!)
• A British researcher says he’s discovered a way to make gray hair regain it’s color. According to Desmond Tobin, all hair retains it’s color pigments; it’s just that in gray hair the color pigments need to be turned back on. (OK, so where’s the switch at?)
• A study on the effects of boxing finds that between 10-and-50% of all boxers develop Punch Drunk Syndrome, causing them to have slurred speech, trouble walking and memory lapses. (The rest of the boxers are born with slurred speech and memory lapses?)

SLOUGHING OFF:
Chicago-based consultant Jeffrey Mayer claims that most office workers waste 80% of their workday. How so? By doing things that, though work-related, fail to bring results, and by letting email, phone calls, and conversations with co-workers eat into their time. (If this is true, shouldn’t you be able to have an 8-hour work-week if you work really hard?)
– “Time Management for Dummies”

BS DILEMMAS:
• While tidying up, you come across your teenage daughter’s diary. Do you read it?
• An executive at a large company will give you a big contract but demands a cash kickback. Do you agree to pay?
• You’re asked to give a eulogy for an uncle who was a real SOB. Do you refuse?

DID YOU KNOW?
• July is the most popular month for high school reunions.
– “The Toilet Paper”
• If Britain’s Princess Diana were alive, she’d be turning 50 today.
– History.com
• TV personality Carson Daly went to college in Palm Springs CA … on a golf scholarship.

The “Great International Chicken Wing Society Cookoff” begins today in Reno, Nevada.
• “International Joke Day” celebrating humor from around-the-world. Nothing like a joke in Farsi! Have listeners call in with brief jokes in other languages. Don’t have them explain them, just laugh uproariously.

• “Dog Days of Summer” through August 11th, traditionally the hottest time of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. The name comes from the ancients, who would sacrifice a brown dog at this time to appease Sirius, the Dog Star, believing that star was the cause of the hot, sultry weather. “Air Conditioning Appreciation Days” run simultaneously to celebrate the contribution of AC to a better way of life (and a really high electricity bill). Today is also “Stay Out Of the Sun Day” (unless you’re working on a melanoma collection).
