BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
(***UPDATE***) ★ Tony Dow, best-known for playing ‘Wally’ on “Leave It to Beaver,” has died at 77. Confirmation of the actor’s death comes after it was prematurely reported by a since-deleted post on his official Facebook. A new post on the account reads: “We have received confirmation from Christopher, Tony’s son, that Tony passed away earlier (Wed.) morning, with his loving family at his side…We know that the world is collectively saddened by the loss of this incredible man. He gave so much to us all and was loved by so many.” Dow was diagnosed with cancer in May.

★ Brad Pitt is now the proud new owner of a historic — and very expensive home. The 58-year-old actor and architecture aficionado has reportedly purchased a $40 million home in the Carmel Highlands on the California coast, located on a seaside bluff and marking one of the most expensive real estate deals ever made in the area. The cliffside bungalow is said to be known as the D.L. James House, named for the American writer who commissioned its design in 1918. The house was designed by Charles Sumner Greene of the influential 20th-century architecture firm, Greene and Greene. The closing price goes down as one of the most expensive ever to happen in the Carmel area.

★ Netflix has grand plans to turn “The Gray Man” into a sprawling spy franchise. Days after the $200 million-budgeted CIA thriller landed on the streaming service, Netflix announced plans to expand the series with a sequel and a spinoff, both of which are currently in development. Ryan Gosling and directors Joe and Anthony Russo are set to return for the sequel. Co-writer Stephen McFeely, whose credits also include “Avengers: Endgame” and “Captain America: Civil War,” is writing the screenplay. The directors said: “The reaction to The Gray Man has been nothing short of phenomenal…With so many amazing characters in the movie, we had always intended for The Gray Man to be part of an expanded universe, and we are thrilled that Netflix is announcing a sequel with Ryan, as well as a second script that we’re excited to talk about soon.”

★ The CEO of Instagram has defended the app’s shift to video content, following criticism from Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian about the new format. In a video posted to Twitter (of all things…) Adam Mosseri said: “It’s not yet good, and we’re going to have to get it to a good place…” Mosseri indicated that Instagram is experimenting with “a number of different changes to the app,” with the intention of giving users “a more full-screen experience”. He also addressed “concerns” from users who are unhappy with the new video-first design, likely referencing resistance from Jenner and Kardashian, who both posted Instagram Stories saying, “Make Instagram Instagram Again” on Monday.

★ CNN political commentator and former Trump White House staffer Alyssa Farah Griffin is joining “The View” full-time, according to reports. She is expected to fill the spot vacated by Meghan McCain last August. Prior to her time on The View and CNN, Farah Griffin served as press secretary for Vice President Mike Pence and as Special Assistant to Trump. In 2019, she became the Press Secretary for the United States Department of Defense. She also served as Trump’s Director of Strategic Communications. A spokesperson for The View would neither confirm nor deny the report, saying “We do not have a co-host announcement to make at this time. Stay tuned.”

SHOOTING THE BULL

HOMELY-COURT ADVANTAGE:
You’ve heard the saying “Stay in your lane”? Well, how about “Stay in your league”? Researchers from the University of Missouri-Columbia say that they’ve found that relationships between 2 people of “similar desirability” tend to last longer and are more successful. In a study, it was determined that not only are people who share a similar level of attractiveness more likely to end up in a relationship together, those relationships are also more likely to “go the distance”. Simply put, the study authors believe people who “outkick their coverage” won’t be with their attractive partners for very long.
(Do they really believe that I’d want to be seen with someone of “similar desirability” to me (as they put it) FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE?)
(…And they’re trying to tell us that money has absolutely nothing to do with it?)

FAR AWAY FAST-FOOD:
➢ KFC has added 2 mouth-watering new items to the menu, but you’ll have to go quite a distance to try them. The new Flossy Original Recipe Chicken Porridge and the Shroom ‘N Cheese Pockett are both exclusive to Singapore. Priced at about US $2.85, the Flossy Chicken Porridge is just what it sounds like: warm porridge topped with Original Recipe fillet chunks and chicken floss. What is chicken floss? “A dried meat product with a light and fluffy texture similar to coarse cotton.” Shroom ‘N Cheese Pockett is described as a “warm and hearty toasted wrap” filled with KFC’s famous hot & crispy Zinger fillet, herb-marinated mushrooms, mayonnaise, and melted mozzarella and cheddar cheese. It goes for about US $5.00. (How much is delivery?)
➢ Known for favorites like the Big Mac and Quarter Pounder, McDonald’s is adding another burger to the lineup…in South Korea, at least. The Boseong Green Tea Pork Burger is made, logically, from Boseong Green Tea Pork, which “is known for a tender texture with less smell.” The patty is layered with spicy cheese sauce, bacon, Korean cabbage, red onions and mayo, and cushioned between 2 buns.  It’s sells for US $5.00, and it looks pretty good! LAPTOPS ARE TOPS:
In these days of telecommuting and ‘digital everything’, you might think that no one relies on their computer more than you do. But what about your kids? According to a study, students spend 40 hours a week on their laptops. In research involving 600 young adults, who have been a full-time student in the past 5 years, found that on average, 7 hours of laptop time is used (each week) for schoolwork, and another 6 is taken up with Zoom classes or lectures. Video games were the most popular extra-curricular activity, with 7 hours each week spent playing on laptops, while nearly 20 hours went to streaming shows and movies using social media and shopping. 63% of students claim they couldn’t live without their laptop.
(I thought that too – until I dropped mine! Still breathing…)
(40 hours a week? I spend that much time DECIDING what to stream!)

DID YOU KNOW:
A man who accidentally threw away a hard drive with 8,000 bitcoins on it wants to use robot dogs and AI to help dig through a dump and recover his lost fortune, according to a report. James Howells, from the Wales city of Newport, mistakenly threw away the iPhone-sized drive in 2013. The bitcoin stored on it is now worth roughly $175 million. So, he’s fighting for council’s permission to spend $11 million to excavate the landfill and sort through 110,000 pounds of trash. Both humans and AI-powered machines trained to recognize the hard drive would sort through the garbage in a process he expects to take 3 years. A pair of Boston Dynamics’ robot dogs would also sort through garbage during the day and patrol for trespassing treasure hunters at night.

BS CHRONOMETER 7.28.22

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Milk Chocolate Day”, an excuse for chocoholics everywhere to chow down! (Which would you rather have: chocolate milk, or milk chocolate?)
• “Hamburger Day”, honoring the world’s favorite sandwich, whose origins can be traced back as far as the Middle Ages. Reportedly, Louis Lassen, owner of Louis’ Lunch in New Haven, Connecticut, sold the first hamburger and steak sandwich in the U.S. on this date in 1900. Today, close to 6 billion burgers are served annually by restaurants. Here are 4 food finds about hamburgers:
✓ The oldest fast-food restaurant in the world is the White Castle franchise, which opened in 1921.
✓ Americans eat more burgers at restaurants or on-the-go than they do at home.
✓ The largest hamburger ever created was over 8,000 pounds and was cooked for a burger festival in Seymour, Wisconsin.
✓ Hamburgers are made of beef, not ham, and there is much debate over whether they actually originated in Hamburg, Germany.

• “Chili Dog Day”, There are many different variations of the chili dog, all of them delicious. Today, you might want to try the ‘Coney Island” (European-style sausage of German origin, with a natural sheep or lamb casing, topped with a beef heart-based sauce), or the ‘Carolina Style’ (a hot dog topped with onions, chili, and either slaw or mustard).
• “World Hepatitis Day”, to create awareness that 1-in-12 people worldwide is living with either chronic hepatitis B or C, far higher than the prevalence of HIV or any type of cancer.
• “National Waterpark Day”, in the United States. Nearly every state has a waterpark. Impressively, Wisconsin Dells, WI (pop. 3000) is the Waterpark Capital of the World. However, the largest indoor park in America is at Kalahari Resorts and Conventions in Sandusky, OH. (And the longest waterslide in the world is in Malaysia: https://tinyurl.com/2s2kr9d3 )
• “National Intern Day”, celebrating the leaders of tomorrow, and to bring attention to the challenges and inequalities that entry-level candidates face in the workforce. The day also serves to show companies how investing in internship programs is a way to invest in the future. (I got an internship at a nudist camp…just for the exposure!)
• “Buffalo Soldiers Day”, it was on July 28, 1866, with the passage of the Army Reorganization Act, that Congress created 6 army regiments of all-black soldiers, consisting of 2 cavalry units and 4 infantry units—which were later consolidated into the 24th and 25th infantry units. They all eventually were known as Buffalo Soldiers.
