BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Ricky Martin has won his case against his nephew who accused him of having a sexual relationship and then harassing him afterward — or to be more accurate, his 21-year-old nephew withdrew his claim. Reportedly, Martin showed up for his scheduled Puerto Rico court appearance on Zoom, and, according to his legal team: “Just as we had anticipated, the temporary protection order was not extended by the court. The accuser confirmed to the court that his decision to dismiss the matter was his alone, without any outside influence or pressure…We are glad that our client saw justice done and can now move forward with his life and his career.” The unnamed nephew had claimed he and Martin had a 7-month sexual affair — and after it ended, Martin began stalking and harassing him. Martin strongly denied the allegations, and his legal team said the nephew suffers from mental issues.

★ We’ve got some new details on “Bridgerton” season 3 – as well as word on some new cast members. The Netflix show has added Daniel Francis (“Stay Close”), Sam Phillips (“The Crown”), and James Phoon (“Wreck”) to its Season 3 cast as filming begins in London. Francis plays ‘Marcus Anderson’, a charismatic presence who lights up any room he enters. Phillips plays ‘Lord Debling’, a genial lord with unusual interests, and Phoon plays ‘Harry Dankworth’; what he lacks in wit and intelligence, he more than makes up for with serious good looks. Season 3 finds Penelope as she’s finally given up her crush on Colin. Now, she’s focusing on finding a husband who will respect her independence so she can continue her double life as ‘Lady Whistledown’. Meanwhile, Colin is back from his summer travels with a new look and major swagger, but is sad to learn that Penelope, is giving him the cold shoulder. (***CAUTION – preview***) ★ “Friends” actress Lisa Kudrow was apparently disturbed by her son’s reaction to her role in the hit sitcom, saying this week that it felt “demeaning.” During an interview with Seth Meyers on his show, Kudrow said her 24-year-old son, Julian Murray Stern, was surprised by the humor in Friends. Kudrow said: “He was impressed. He goes, ‘It’s actually really funny”. But he seemed to be more bowled over by other members of the cast. Kudrow went on to describe her son’s reaction, quoting him as saying: “‘The guys are so funny.’ And he’s like, ‘No, I mean, you’re funny, too.’ And never in my life have I wanted to tell my own kid, like, ‘F you!’” Kudrow said that she didn’t actually say the word — but she did think it.

STAY 5 BEERS SHORT OF A 6-PACK:
I love the sound of this: Drink up to cool down. Generally speaking, the consumption of alcohol on a hot day isn’t recommended by doctors, but in the midst of an international heat wave, one physician on Twitter is claiming that beer can help with hydration. But we’re not talking about an all-afternoon bender while sitting on a lawn chair under the blazing sun. Dr. Ellie Mackin Roberts sparked a now-viral debate when she recently tweeted 10 steps to help beat the heat. Tip #9 is: “If you are dehydrated (and an adult, and able to do so) drink a half a pint of beer (inc. alcohol free!) then move straight onto water (or a sports drink or cordial if you don’t like water).” Followers quickly responded, questioning how beer could ever be helpful in trying to avoid dehydration. From there, Dr. Stuart Galloway, of the University of Stirling backed Roberts up, explaining that beer contains electrolytes, sugar and salt, which helps the body retain fluid, rather than it going straight through. He says if a small amount of beer is consumed, it can be part of a plan to stay hydrated. He hastens to point out that more than one or 2 servings will lead to dehydration. So, make sure you remember to switch to water or sports drinks…and also stay away from hot coffee and tea. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/yms823rc
(And once more, I’ll say it: Beer – is there anything it CAN’T do?)
(So, what you’re telling me is I CAN go fishing, but only for a few minutes?)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:

➢ A Missouri man is suing Bass Pro Shops because he says it is refusing to honor its lifetime warranty on socks. Kent Slaughter of Springfield said that after almost a decade of exchanging his “Redhead Lifetime Guarantee All-Purpose Wool Socks” every time they wore out, the outdoor recreation equipment chain changed its policy in 2021. Instead of getting another 4 pairs with lifetime warranties, Slaughter says in his class-action suit that he given socks that only carried a 60-day warranty. The lawsuit said Bass Pro is misrepresenting the socks in its ads because it says they are “The last sock you’ll ever need to buy”. (The company has a right to change its sock warranty. But obviously this guy is not familiar with any concept involving the words “change” and “socks”!)
➢ Authorities in California recently received numerous 911 calls from worried drivers. On the side of Highway 101 was a very strange sight, which prompted the San Luis Obispo Police Department to post on its Facebook page: “Yep, it’s a coffin. Yep, it was on Santa Rosa near Walnut yesterday and yep, it’s never been occupied.” So why was there an empty casket on a busy freeway? Apparently, it had been found abandoned outside a building, and a member of the transient population decided to push it to a swap meet to sell it. She was taking a break when police found the coffin on the side of the road. It eventually wound up at its destination. No word on whether it was sold. (Man! What’s someone gotta do around here to be able to take a “rest in peace”?)

DID YOU KNOW?
Quidditch, a sport created for the fictional world of Harry Potter before spreading to US college campuses, is changing its name to quadball. In December, 2 of the sport’s major governing bodies, US Quidditch and Major League Quidditch, said they were considering a name change due to “sponsorship and broadcast opportunities” that had been lost because Warner Bros, which produces the ‘Harry Potter’ film series, owns the copyright for the sport’s present name. But this week, another of the sport’s governing bodies, the International Quidditch Association, cited JK Rowling’s “anti-trans positions” as a reason for the change. The Harry Potter author has been accused of being transphobic, an allegation she denies.

BS CHRONOMETER 07.22.22

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Hammock Day”, honoring the most relaxing thing you can have in your backyard. It’s the perfect excuse to slow down and chill during the ‘Dog Days of Summer’. (And keep your “banana hammock” jokes to yourself!)
• “Summer Leisure Day”, for an idea of how to observe it, see “Hammock Day”. (Or, why not spend your leisurely day arguing with someone about the proper pronunciation of ‘leisure’?)
• “Ratcatcher’s Day”, observed on the anniversary of the fabled ‘Pied Piper of Hamelin’ (Germany) piping the town’s rats into the Weser River in 1376.
• “Spooner’s Day”, honoring the 1844 birth of William Archibald Spooner in London England, who accidentally invented ‘spoonerisms’ – slips of the tongue like ‘queer old dean’ instead of ‘dear old queen’ or ‘blushing crow’ for ‘crushing blow’. (Now you’re just pit-nicking…)
• “Lion’s Share Day”, A “lion’s share” is an idiom meaning “the largest part of something divided amongst others.” The expression comes from one of Aesop’s fables, where a lion asks animals to help him hunt, and afterwards tells them why he should get to keep all parts of the spoils.
• “Pi Approximation Day”, today’s date, written in the date/month format, is 22/7. That’s an approximate value for pi. Don’t confuse today with Pi Day, observed on March 14th. (Any chance a nerd came up with this?)
• “Mango Day”, there’s an international mango festival that has been held in Delhi, India annually since 1987. Fun facts about mangos:
-20 million tons of mangos are grown annually.
-They are related to cashews and pistachios.
-A mango provides 100% of your daily vitamin C requirement.
-In India, a basket of mangos is considered a gesture of friendship.
-Mango trees can grow as tall as 100 feet!
-Most of the mangos sold in the US come from Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, Guatemala, and Haiti.
-There are also mango festivals held in Canada, Jamaica, the Philippines, and the USA.

SATURDAY-
• “Hot Enough For Ya? Day”, when it should be legal throw a water balloon at anyone who asks you that overused, plain-as-the-end-of-your-sweat-dripping-nose question. (For maximum effect, the word “for” should be pronounced “fer”)
• “Vanilla Ice Cream Day”, celebrating the favorite ice cream flavor of the masses … by far. (I have a lactose intolerant friend who sells ice cream for a living — He can’t take it, but he can dish it out!)
• “Gorgeous Grandma Day”, everybody thinks that their grandma is gorgeous – so what could be better than an entire day devoted to acknowledging that fact? Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are well known, so Gorgeous Grandma Day is a natural progression.
• “International Yada, Yada, Yada Day”, “Yada yada yada” is the phrase used as a way of skipping over uninteresting and/or irrelevant details. Comedian Lenny Bruce used it, and there are records of it being used in 1940s vaudeville. But it was in the 1990s, in the TV show “Seinfeld”, that “yada yada yada” really became a ubiquitous catchphrase. “The Yada Yada” was the name of the 153rd episode of the sitcom.
• “Peanut Butter and Chocolate Day”, they’ve been an undeniably necessary combination since each met the other. Whether you’re drooling over Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups or nomming down on delicious peanut butter and chocolate ice cream, this is a combination that is guaranteed to make your mouth happy.

SUNDAY-
• “Cousins Day”, to honor cousins who are living and pay homage to those who aren’t. (You might as well enjoy them, because you’re stuck with them, and there’s nothing you can do about it!)
• “Drive-Thru Day”, honoring the businesses that allow you to shop without leaving your vehicle. There are drive-thru banks, coffee shops, fast-food restaurants, florists, ice cream bars, liquor stores, marriage chapels (Las Vegas), and pharmacies. What’s the weirdest you’ve seen? Ours is a funeral home.
• “Tell an Old Joke Day”, a good excuse to dust off your best chicken-crossing-the-road zinger (***and ask listeners for their best jokes … but only if they’re under 5-years-old***) What do you call a bear with no teeth? A gummy bear! What do you call cheese that isn’t yours? Nacho cheese!
• “Tequila Day”, celebrating Mexico’s national booze that’s becoming increasingly popular in other drinks beside margaritas. But we still like it the old-fashioned way – a little salt, a slice of lime and … ay caramba!
• “Amelia Earhart Day”, honoring the famous aviation pioneer who was born on this date in 1897. During an attempt to make a circumnavigational flight of the globe in 1937, she disappeared over the Pacific Ocean. Theories and conspiracies still exist about the cause of her disappearance.
