BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:

★ Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest, Kelsey Grammer and Gayle King are among the presenters and stars set to appear on the 47th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards. This year, the big awards will be presented virtually, with recipients and other guests appearing from home. Additional categories will be announced on the Daytime Emmys’ social media accounts simultaneously with the CBS broadcast, with some following the broadcast and others streamed in separate virtual ceremonies on July 19 and July 26. The 47th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards will be broadcast tomorrow on CBS.

★ It’s a dirty job, but Mike Rowe’s gotta do it (again). Discovery Channel has ordered a “Dirty Jobs” sequel series called “Dirty Jobs: Rowe’d Trip.” He’ll host the four-episode show, which Discovery describes as “part reunion, part road-trip, part look-back-special, and part where-are-they-now.” In “Rowe’d Trip,” Rowe and the original “Dirty Jobs” crew will travel together in a mini-RV and reminisce about the good old days — and the grimy gigs he took on in the name of entertainment.

★ Mel Gibson is already feeling the heat from Winona Ryder speaking out about his alleged homophobic and anti-Semitic remarks at a dinner party. His role in the upcoming animated “Chicken Run” sequel is set to be recast by producers. The film is scheduled to go into production next year. Gibson voiced the character ‘Rocky’ in the 2000 original film, but will not be asked back.

AW, SHUCKS:
There are plenty of ways to cook corn on the cob, but I’ve got to admit I’ve only ever attempted one of them: good old boiling. That allows me to turn my attention to other pressing matters – like grilling burgers and trying to convince my kids to make another trip to the cooler for dear old dad, who is working hard and is very thirsty. But it turns out, you should be cooking your cobs just about ANY way other than boiling. Why? For your health. A new article at the Mashable website explains that corn contains folic acid (also known as vitamin B9). Folic acid allows the body to healthily produce red and white blood cells, and it also helps with the conversion of carbohydrates into energy — in other words, it promotes a healthy metabolism. It’s particularly important in pregnancies, as it lowers the possibility of birth defects. When corn is boiled, it loses its folic acid, which seeps into the water. So, you’re essentially making your corn less healthy by dropping it into that pot. Other, healthier alternatives include steaming corn in the husk (which retains its nutrients), grilling and oven-roasting.
(I suppose next you’re going to tell me that it should be eaten around the cob rather than across!)
(I’m not too concerned with how my corn is cooked because I use it purely as a salt and butter delivery system…)
(I guess we’ll play it by ear…)

BASED ON A GRU STORY:
Movie fans in France were allowed back into theaters this week for the first time since the COVID-19 lockdown, and they were reminded to observe social distancing rules by minions. That’s right. Minions. Stuffed toy versions of the yellow, pill-shaped movie characters were placed in seats at intervals at the MK2 cinema in Paris for a showing of the 2015 movie “Minions” – a spin-off of the “Despicable Me” franchise that made them famous. The Minions, dressed in their trademark goggles and dungarees, were placed strategically around the auditorium to enforce a rule that viewers leave at least one place free between them and their neighbors. And it wasn’t the first time the Minions have been enlisted to help keep people safe from COVID-19. They were also featured in a public service announcement, developed in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO), encouraging people to wash their hands and keep their distance to stay safe.
(I can see this being helpful, but the same approach probably wouldn’t work for a showing of…say…Friday the 13th!)
(And for the first time ever, moviegoers got to enjoy the first half-hour of a film without the dude beside them crunching popcorn and slurping a soft drink…)

ALBERTA NAME ROUNDUP:
The Canadian province of Alberta has released its list of baby names for 2019, and while the most popular names for boys (Noah, Liam, Oliver) and girls (Olivia, Charlotte, Sophia) might not be very surprising, some of the names further down the list are. “Game of Thrones” enthusiasts will be happy to know that Arya, Daenarys, Sansa, Catelyn and Jorah made the list. Three Albertans were also named Khaleesi in 2019. Presumably, there are also plenty of Avengers fans in the province, because Thor, Loki, Quill and Jarvis also made the cut. Fox, Wolf, Bear, Lion and Tiger were included in the list, as were Chevy, Ford, Benz, Mercedes, Lexus and Royce. Two Alberta residents also named their babies “Baby,” which, admittedly, is a pretty spot-on description. Some other memorable baby names in Alberta in 2019:
• Handsome-Jack
• Eulogy
• Legend
• Cowboy
• Corny

DID YOU KNOW?
According to a 2019 study, regular tea drinkers have better organized brains than non-tea drinkers. Researchers from the National University of Singapore found that study participants who consumed oolong, black, or green tea at least four times a week for 25 years displayed brain regions that were connected in a more efficient way. They concluded that their results “offer the first evidence of positive contribution of tea drinking to brain structure, and suggest that drinking tea regularly has a protective effect against age-related decline in brain organization.”

BS REASONS TO BEWARE OF CAMPING WITH YOUR KIDS:
A few things to consider before that family tenting trip …
• All of your kids’ socks will become wet within 5 minutes of your arrival.
• Starting a fire on purpose is really hard. Starting one by accident is very easy. It’s kind of like making a baby.
• Your morning bathroom ritual will go from being your favorite part of the day to an hour of panic.
• Your kids will each find a special rock and then promptly lose it, causing you to spend the entire weekend searching for that rock.
• Ever try to get a 3-year-old to sit down? Now try it in a canoe.
• You’ll say, “I think that’s poison ivy” at least 40 times and be right twice.
• You’ll spend approximately 75% of each night explaining what that noise was.
• Two words: Tent farts.

TODAY’S SLICE OF BS:

➠ The Original Cast of the 80’s TV series “Mr. Belvedere” recently reunited over a zoom video stream for a special one-night-only Q & A with fans. (They wanted to do more ‘sit-downs’, but could only get one night off from Home Depot…)
➠ “Bad Boys for Life” was the most watched movie rental last week. The film reunited Will Smith with buddy Martin Lawrence. (And most importantly, it reunited Martin Lawrence with employment!)
➠ Thought of the Day:  The weirdest thing about living alone is how many hours you go without speaking a single word. (Clearly this does not apply to cat-loving single women over the age of 40…)
➠ Thought of the Day:  Introverts don’t want to go but still want the invitations. (Meanwhile, Perverts want the invitation to watch you go…)
➠ Did you know that according to the bible, you shouldn’t have sex before marriage, pleasure yourself, get a tattoo, or eat pork?  It’s true! (Hell, I have a cousin who’s done all of that while waiting in line at the tractor-pull!)
