BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
***UPDATE*** ★ Ray Liotta, best known for his roles in “Field of Dreams” and “Goodfellas,” has died at the age of 67. He had been filming a movie called “Dangerous Waters” in the Dominican Republic when he died in his sleep. No foul play is suspected. The Golden Globe-nominated actor is best known for playing mobster ‘Henry Hill’ in the 1990 Martin Scorsese-directed blockbuster “Goodfellas,” alongside Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci. He is also known for his portrayal of ‘Shoeless Joe Jackson’ in the 1989’s “Field of Dreams,” alongside Kevin Costner. Liotta was on the island with his fiancée, Jacy Nittolo, at the time of his death. He also leaves behind an adult daughter.

★ After nearly 3,300 episodes across 19 seasons, Ellen DeGeneres has stepped away from “The Ellen Show”. In her emotional final episode, which aired yesterday, DeGeneres fought back tears as she walked out for one last monologue. After a montage of walkouts tracing her journey from the series premiere to the present day, Ellen was met with an extended standing ovation from the audience, after which a visibly emotional DeGeneres said: “Thank you.” The final episode featured guests Jennifer Aniston, Pink and Billie Eilish. ★ Kevin Spacey has been charged with 4 counts of sexual assault against 3 men by Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service. The decision was unveiled yesterday by the agency, which has spent over a year reviewing a file passed to them by the Metropolitan Police. The charges are the latest in a series of legal battles both civil and criminal that Spacey has been fighting since allegations of his sexual assault and misconduct were first publicly exposed in 2017 by “Rent” and “Star Trek: Discovery” actor Anthony Rapp, who said he was 14 at the time of the incident.

★ This weekend, Tom Cruise has a chance to do something he’s never done before — open a film to more than $100 million at the domestic box office. The prolific actor, who has made a name for himself as a fearless stuntman, has generated more than $4.2 billion at the domestic box office since 1981, but has never had a film open to more than $65 million. After several pandemic-related delays, “Top Gun: Maverick” arrives in theaters this weekend with a 97% “Fresh” rating from Rotten Tomatoes and strong presale tickets. Box-office analysts are predicting a domestic opening of between $98 million and $125 million for the film.

★ Could wedding bells ringing this summer for J-Lo? Jennifer Lopez wants to marry Ben Affleck “sooner rather than later”, according to a source. The pair are still unsure when they will tie the knot but she would be OK with getting hitched “as early as this summer” after they shared their intention to get married last month. The 2 got back together in 2021, after calling off their first engagement in 2004. US Weekly reports that an insider with knowledge indicates that Lopez “wants the formalities out of the way so they can start their journey as man and wife sooner rather than later.” And added she would say “she’s not in a rush to get married, but her friends think otherwise. The truth is that if Ben wanted to push this forward as early as this summer, she’d be totally down with that.”

JUNK ABOUT JUNK FOOD:
➠ Mountain Dew has announced the re-release of its fan-favorite “Typhoon” flavor, a tropical fruit-punch twist on the original. In a statement, the drink’s makers said: “The throwback flavor strikes again — MTN DEW TYPHOON is back. A storm of refreshing fruity punch on your taste buds.” Rumors of Typhoon’s return bubbled up online as Dew-hard fans expressed their excitement for the flavor that fizzled out a decade ago. But to try a sip of the pinkish-orange soda, fans will need to be a member of Dew HQ, the brand’s free rewards program. After joining the Dew crew, you can purchase 16-ounce cans of Mtn Dew Typhoon from the Dew Store for $12 beginning June 1. The drink was first released in 2010 as a finalist during the “DEWmocracy II” promotion. (Yup, I think one more bad pun should just about “DEW” it…)
➠ Arby’s is selling a fast-food staple that it’s never offered before. Best known for its roast beef, the chain is adding a hamburger to its menu for the first time in its nearly 60-year history. Arby’s announced Monday it’s adding the “Wagyu Steakhouse Burger,” which costs $5.99, as a limited-time offering beginning Monday. The burger is a blend of Wagyu beef and ground beef. Wagyu, which means “Japanese cow,” refers to specific breeds of cattle and is known for its rich flavor and buttery tenderness. (Which is another thing that Arby’s has never offered before!)

MYTHBUSTERS: SUNSCREEN EDITION
Today is ‘Sunscreen Protection Day’. The statements below, contrary to what you have probably been told, are all myths:
• Dark skin doesn’t need sunscreen/can’t get melanoma:  Darker skin tones are less prone to skin cancer, but this can mean signs are ignored until chances of successful treatment are diminished.
• A base tan protects you:  A base tan is nature’s way of producing sun protection because you’ve been irradiated. But it doesn’t lessen your risk of skin cancer, and you’ll age your skin faster with constant sun tanning.
• You don’t need to use sunscreen inside:  All contact with sunlight requires protection, even exposure through an office or car window and walking from building to building.
• The number on sunscreen is proportionate to the number of minutes of sun protection:  Nope. Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a measure of how much solar energy (UV radiation) is required to burn protected skin. SPF 15 allows 1/15 of harmful UVB rays to reach the skin. The remaining 14/15 means you’re protecting against 93% of UVB radiation. So, SPF 30 blocks 97% and SPF 50 prevents 98%. (OK you got me there…I thought that one was true!)
• The SPF in makeup is enough:  It’s good enough to cover you when you’re walking from your car to work. If you’re outside longer than 15 minutes, you need higher SPF and must reapply.
• One application of sunscreen in the morning is enough for the whole day:  Reapplying is just as important as the first coat. Sunscreen gets consumed once the light hits it, which means you have to reapply regularly to remain protected.
• You don’t need sunscreen during off-peak hours: The sun’s rays can cause damage no matter what time it is. If you’re outside for longer than 15 minutes, you need SPF. You can still get burned at 8 am as well as after 4 pm. (So why can’t I seem to TAN then??)
• Sunscreen on your face, arms, back, and legs is enough:  It’s a great start, but you should also apply it to the ears, nose, hands and the tops of your feet. And remember your scalp, especially if you have thinning or less hair. (That’s what my fishing hat is for!)
• Melanoma is only caused by sun exposure: Melanoma can strike without sun exposure, which makes regular skin checks important. Sun exposure does make the risk higher.
(See you at the beach this summer…if we recognize each other with all the sunscreen and extra clothing on!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A London woman has been awarded £74,000 (US$93,000) after not being invited out for drinks with her co-workers. 51-year-old casino worker Rita Leher says she was left feeling “shunned” after being the only employee who wasn’t asked to go to a cocktail bar after work. An employment tribunal agreed that the exclusion was a “detriment at work” as she would “lose the opportunity to bond with colleagues”. It was also found that she was discriminated against after being denied training courses, which were granted to younger employees. The tribunal noted that after Leher had been uninvited for drinks, she took a period of stress leave to help cope with the exclusion. (In totally unrelated news, I’ve got a list of about 200 people from over the years who are about to get a letter from my lawyer!)
➢ A sheep has received a 3-year sentence after being found guilty of killing a woman. The ram was taken into police custody in South Sudan earlier this month after it attacked the 45-year-old, who later died of her injuries. According to police, the ram was apprehended and is currently in custody at a Police Station. A spokesperson said: “The owner is innocent and the ram is the one who perpetrated the crime so it deserves to be arrested”. The ram will spend the next 3 years serving its sentence in a military camp in Sudan’s Lakes State. (Man! That’s a EWE problem!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Scientists have developed a new “smart” pacifier for newborn babies. A team at Washington State University says their wireless, bioelectronic dummy can monitor the health of babies born prematurely and is non-invasive. That means newborn babies won’t have to undergo twice-daily blood draws to measure their electrolyte levels. The smart pacifier will do that automatically as they use it.

BS CHRONOMETER 05.27.22

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Cellophane Tape Day”, marking the date in 1930 that a patent for the product was granted to Richard Drew. His invention was later marketed by 3M as ‘Scotch’ tape. Mr. Drew also invented masking tape. (I had a book about him. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the beginning…)
• “Grape Popsicle Day”, a salute to one of the favorite flavors of the frozen treat. Also, messiest.
• “Sunscreen Protection Day”, to create awareness of the importance of using protection against the harmful UV rays from the Sun. (also “Heat Awareness Day” and “Don’t Fry Day”) (***See ‘Mythbusters: Sunscreen Edition’, above***]
• “Nothing To Fear Day”, it’s a chance to stand up and declare, as President Franklin D. Roosevelt did on May 27, 1941 that, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself,” and take back control of our lives. (He forgot about spiders…)
• “National Title Track Day”, a day to listen only to title tracks, whether from a record, CD, a tape, the radio, or (GASP) from a streaming service. Some of the best: ‘Let It Be’ by The Beatles, ‘L.A. Woman’ by The Doors, Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ and Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’.  (***Add to the list!***)
• “National Road Trip Day”, observed on the Friday before Memorial Day in the US, and the official kickoff of the summer road trip season. 63% of road trippers say that having good music, audiobooks, and/or podcasts to listen to are the most important parts of a successful road trip. (We think the most important thing is having a dad who owns a gas station…)

SATURDAY-
• “Hamburger Day”, celebrating one of the cornerstone foods of Western civilization. While it was invented in Germany, its popularity spread like wildfire throughout the US and Canada. (What burger topping can you absolutely NOT do without? And what one is a dealbreaker?)
• “Brisket Day”, brisket is a tricky meat in that it comes from the animal tough, but if you find a particularly well-marbled piece and cook it correctly, it will become fork-soft and simply peel apart, making it the tenderest of tender meats. (Whoops! Drooled just a bit there…)
• “Amnesty International Day”, commemorating the 1961 launch of ‘Appeal for Amnesty’ which evolved into today’s “AI”. The organization strives to protect human rights around-the-world by publicizing problems and encouraging citizens and governments to take action.
• “Slugs Return From Capistrano Day”, the slugs that have been living in the beautiful Mission San Juan Capistrano leave their winter haven and go back to the gardens and yards they came from. The holiday is a parody of “Swallows Return to Capistrano” or “Swallows Day” in March, when swallows migrate to Capistrano.

SUNDAY-
• “International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers”, observed on the anniversary of the first deployment of UN Peacekeeping Forces, in 1948, in the Middle East.
• “Learn About Composting Day”, a great excuse to go green and help the environment. (I refuse to work with compost. It’s degrading…)
• “Paper Clip Day”, yes, even the paperclip has its own day. (Really, a paper clip is just a stapler for people with commitment issues…) LINK: https://www.officemuseum.com/paper_clips.htm
• “Coq Au Vin Day”, Coq au vin (translates to “rooster with wine”) is French braise of chicken, cooked with wine, lardons (salt pork), mushrooms and garlic.
• “Biscuit Day”, American biscuits are small crusty bread rolls, often served at breakfast or as a side dish. However, in the UK, the word “biscuit” is used for flat sweet treats which are known as “cookies” in North America. (And don’t even get me STARTED on dog biscuits…)
