Sheeters Always Prosper!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Selena Gomez is no longer the most-followed celebrity on Instagram.  On Monday, it was discovered that Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo has taken over the top spot.  At last check, Ronaldo was sitting at 144,352,910 followers, about 25,000 more than Gomez.  Last month, she announced to her army of fans that she had decided to take a step back from social media in order to take better care of herself.

★ The producers of “Jurassic World” are being sued for $10 million over the use of a slogan used to promote the movie.  Frederick Zaccheo says he entered into a deal with Universal City Studios and Steven Spielberg’s company, Amblin Entertainment, giving them the right to use the slogan “Save the Dinos” as part of a marketing campaign for the movie. Zaccheo claims Universal and Amblin breached the deal by selling shirts, socks and other clothing items with just the slogan on them and nothing else, much like his own ‘Dinosaur Project’ merchandise.  He wants over $10 million.
($10 million for ‘Save the Dinos’?  Imagine if he came up with something clever!)

★ Kanye West says he’s stepping back from politics.  In tweets posted Tuesday, he seemingly attempted to retreat from many of his recent claims and statements, writing:  “My eyes are now wide open and now realize I’ve been used to spread messages I don’t believe in.  I am distancing myself from politics and completely focusing on being creative !!!”  That came after a series of tweets denouncing U.S. President Trump’s immigration policy and the ‘Blexit’ movement, for which he previously designed a line of shirts.

★ Nicole Kidman says that her daughters, 10-year-old Sunday and 7-year-old Faith, will be making cameos in the second season of “Big Little Lies”. Kidman appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” for the big announcement.  After she spilled the beans, she said that her two kids would love to be guests on “Ellen”.  Ellen replied that they are more than welcome.

★ It hasn’t been an easy road for the Duchess of Cornwall.  For years, Camilla Parker Bowles was described in the press as ‘the most hated woman in Britain’.  Season three of “The Crown” will show how she got that title. And as it delves into that part of the royal family’s history, it’s bound to open some old wounds. British actors Josh O’Connor and Emerald Fennell have been selected to play the young prince and his mistress. It will air in 2019.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Adele – is the richest British celebrity aged 30 or under for the third year in a row – despite barely working since she finished her world tour last summer. According to Heat magazine’s 2018 rich list, she is now worth £147.5million ($187 million USD).  At age 30, this is her last year on the list.
• Ariana Grande — has made her triumphant return to the stage. On Monday night, NBC aired “A Very Wicked Halloween: Celebrating 15 Years on Broadway”. That marked her first time back on stage since her ex-boyfriend Mac Miller died of an apparent overdose in September and she and ex-fianceé Pete Davidson split in mid-October.
• Pharrell Williams — is the latest big-name musician to tell the president to stop using his music at his rallies. Williams fired off a cease and desist letter to Trump through his lawyer.  The letter begins like this: “On the day of the mass murder of 11 human beings at the hands of a deranged ‘nationalist,’ you played his song ‘Happy’ to a crowd at a political event in Indiana.  There was nothing ‘happy’ about the tragedy inflicted upon our country…and no permission was granted for your use of this song for this purpose.”
• Queen – The director of their ground-breaking video for ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ says he deserves additional compensation. Bruce Gowers was paid about $1,100 for his work, which is regarded as one of the films which launched the music video industry.  He realized when he saw Queen perform with Adam Lambert in 2017 that they’d continued to use his video on stage, without ever having paid him any more money. He says: “They’ve been using my video for 40 years and they’ve never paid me a dime.  It has also been viewed more than 666 million times on YouTube.
• Don McLean — After becoming increasingly open about their relationship, the 73-year-old and his 24-year-old girlfriend Paris Dylan have confirmed their romance.  The ‘American Pie’ singer and the “MTV Catfish” alum both made their pairing official on social media, sharing photos of themselves during their trip to France.
• Foreigner – will headline the 2019 Ramblin’ Man Fair.  It runs July 19-21 in Kent, England. Tickets are on sale now.
• Dixie Chicks — Singer Natalie Maines is being warned that her divorce from “Heroes” star Adrian Pasdar will be dismissed if they don’t hurry up.  In June, 2017, she filed for divorce following 17 years of marriage. Pasdar filed a response a month later and agreed on joint custody of their kids but demanded she pay him spousal support. The case has not seen any real movement since then.
• Midland — has extended their headlining “Electric Rodeo Tour” into 2019. The new round of dates launch on Feb. 8 in Los Angeles, CA.  It concludes May 5 with their headlining debut at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.

REESE’S SNACK:
Now that we’ve seen the results of multiple surveys which all said that everyone’s favorite Halloween candy is Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, here is some startling news.  They are messing with the formula.  Well, not exactly the formula, but the perfect chocolate-to-peanut butter ratio is sure to be a casualty of the new “Reese’s Thins”, coming out in the spring, which they say will be “40 per cent thinner”.  Michelle Buck, the president of Hershey’s, said that “[Reese’s Thins] appeal to those consumers who want something sweet with more permissibility.” The new peanut butter cup will come in both milk and dark chocolate versions, and the company says the original size will still be available.
(It BETTER be…)
(It’s not so bad.  You just have to eat 40% more!)
(I’ll wait until they come to their senses and announce “Reese’s Fats”, thank you very much!)

CATS AND DOGS:
The research department at Facebook decided to take the vast amount of knowledge that they have about each of us, and do a comparison of ‘cat people’ vs. ‘dog people’.  Here are some highlights of what they found:
→ Dog people have more friends:  On average, dog people have 26 more Facebook friends than cat people.  But cat people get invited to more events.
→ Cat people are more likely to be single:  30% of cat people are single.  Just 24% of dog people are.  (That explains why cat people are always getting asked out!)
→ Cat people like indoor activities more:  They disproportionately like books, TV and movies, especially fantasy, sci-fi and anime.  Dog people seems to simply like stories and things about…dogs.
→ Cat people are tired:  Cat people are more likely to annotate a status with “feeling tired”.  But they are also more likely to report that they feel amused, annoyed, happy and sad.  Dog people?  More likely to report that they are excited, proud and blessed.
(Obviously the dog people updated their status before Rover decided to roll in poo, and then jump in the car!)

COMMON WORDS THAT I STILL CAN’T GET STRAIGHT:
⇒ Adverse vs. Averse:  Adverse refers to something harmful, such as a reaction to medication.  To be averse to something is to strongly dislike it.  (Like medication?)
⇒ Elicit vs. Illicit:  To elicit, a verb, means to evoke.  Illicit, an adjective, means illegal.  (Did that one just elicit a yawn?)
⇒ Anymore vs. Any more:  The one-word one means “any longer” as in I don’t need help anymore”.  The two-word “any more” means ‘any additional’, as in “I don’t need any more help.”  (That’s pretty nebulous.  Got any help with THAT word?)
⇒ Hanged vs. Hung:  If someone is put to death by hanging, they were hanged.  Hung is the past tense of hang in all other uses.  (So, you hang until you are hanged?)
⇒ Historic vs. Historical:  A historic event is important and enduring.  A historical event is simply any event that occurred some time ago.  (So, when do you put the word “An” in front of them?)
⇒ Especially vs. Specially:  Especially means particularly or ‘above all’, as in “She loves flowers, especially roses.”  Specially indicates a specific purpose, as in “That toilet was specially designed for people with disabilities.” (OK, when would it be appropriate to use “Exspecially”?)
(Now excuse me while I run this whole thing through Spell-Check and really mess it up!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Twitter is considering doing away with the ‘Like’ button.  CEO and co-founder Jack Dorsey says that they may get rid of the heart-shaped button as a way to improve debate on the platform.  He did not go into more detail, except to say that they are “rethinking everything” about Twitter.
(It’s heart-shaped. Shouldn’t it be the ‘Love’ button?)

• “All Hallows” or “All Saints’ Day” (begun in 835 AD), a Roman Catholic ‘Holy Day of Obligation’ (aren’t they all?).  It’s a public holiday in the Philippines, when families gather to honor the dead.

• “Day Of the Dead” (Dia de los Muertos) in Mexico. Actually, the observance covers 2 days – today, “All Saints Day”, is set aside for remembrance of deceased infants and children (‘angelitos’). Tomorrow, “All Soul’s Day”, is for those who died as adults. For a memorial observance it’s pretty festive, with colorful adornments, lively reunions at family burial plots, fireworks, and special foods. Departed souls are remembered with ‘Dead Men’s Bread,’ which is decorated with sugar skulls. (“Please Mom, can I have the eye socket?”)

• “Authors Day”, a day to celebrate literature in all its forms and to show your appreciation for the incredibly hard work put in by the authors behind your favorite writings. (Thank you, Richard Scarry!)

• “Go Cook For Your Pets Day”, because it’s apparently not enough to house them, train them, exercise them, and clean up after them … now they need haute cuisine!

• “World Vegan Day”, an international focal point for celebrating veganism, a term invented by Donald Watson in 1944. True vegans do not eat meat, fish, dairy products, or eggs; nor do they use any products derived from animals, such as fur or leather.

• “National Vinegar Day”, this common household product brightens many salads, is used in canning, and can shine up a window, too! There are many varieties of vinegar, including: Apple cider * Balsamic * Beer * Cane * Coconut * Date * Distilled vinegar * East Asian black * Flavored vinegar * Fruit * Honey * Job’s tears * Kiwifruit * Kombucha * Malt * Palm * Raisin* Rice * Sinamak * Spirit vinegar * Sherry vinegar * White * Wine *
