Bully For You!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ The set location regularly used for HBO’s “Westworld,” and other iconic Western TV shows is no more after it was destroyed by the fast-moving wildfires in California. “Western Town” was originally built by Paramount Pictures in the 1950’s, and served as the set for classics like “The Cisco Kid.” In the 90s, it was used for Jane Seymour’s, “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman,” which chronicled the post-Civil War frontier town of Colorado Springs.

★ Meghan Markle’s personal assistant has quit only six months after her wedding to Prince Harry. Apparently, Meghan’s assistant, referred to as “Melissa,” played a “pivotal role” in the royal wedding, and, yes, she was also one of the people who had to deal with the Thomas Markle drama at the time (as a reminder, Thomas was blabbing to the press and decided not to come to the royal wedding just a few days before the event).  There’s no word on why she decided to quit, and Kensington Palace has declined to comment on her departure.

★ Meg Ryan is showing off some major bling. She wore her new diamond engagement ring while stepping out in New York City just one day after she announced she and singer John Mellencamp are engaged. The pair first dated for three years before calling it quits in August 2014. They rekindled their romance in May 2017.

★ Tom Cruise has always been one of Scientology’s most prominent stars, and a new book says that he tried to use his clout to convert cast and crew members on a movie set. Cruise’s former agent, Michael Ovitz, says in his new memoir “Who Is Michael Ovitz?” that, “(Steven) Spielberg told me that on the set of their 2005 film “War of the Worlds”, Tom set up a Scientology booth to proselytize”.
(Dictionary.com definition: “to convert or attempt to convert as a proselyte; recruit.”)

BS MUSIC NOTES:

• Kanye West — Shots were fired in an apparent drive-by during a video shoot involving him and controversial rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine in Beverley Hills Thursday night.  Nicki Minaj was scheduled to arrive on set later that night. Nobody was injured.
• Spice Girls – Tickets for their reunion tour are said to be selling out FAST. Tickets for the initially-announced six-concert tour were reported to have sold out in minutes, so four additional shows were quickly added, two in London and two in Manchester.
• The Backstreet Boys – are getting set for a new album and world tour in 2019. The “DNA” tour starts on May 11.  The group’s current Las Vegas residency ends April 27.
• Michael Bublé — will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday.  He has sold more than 60 million records and has won four Grammys and 13 Juno Awards.
• The Rolling Stones — A new book features the artistic set lists created by Ronnie Wood for Rolling Stones tours. The former sign writer has spent years creating canvas artworks based on the band’s concert song lists, and more than 100 are reproduced in “The Rolling Stones Set Lists”.  Woods says, “Sometimes Keith [Richards] and Mick [Jagger] add little doodles, and they become works of art in their own right.”
• Rush – Guitarist Alex Lifeson is recording with drummer Marco Minnemann, who has frequently played with Joe Satriani.  Lifeson also appeared on three songs on an album Minneman put out last year.
• Carrie Underwood – in a new interview, she says that the facial stitches from her fall last year made it difficult to record her recently released album, “Cry Pretty”.  Quote:  “I had stitches inside my mouth, outside my mouth…Going into the studio for the first time, it was a mind game: ‘Do I sound the same, Is my diction the same, Does my mouth move the same as it did before?”
• Trisha Yearwood – will release “Let’s Be Frank”, her first studio album in more than a decade, and fans may be surprised at her new direction.  The album will feature a collection of her versions of her favorite songs by legendary crooner Frank Sinatra.

MATEBOOK:
I don’t know how much success Facebook is having with their “Marketplace” feature, but new feature is sure to be a hit:  Canada became the first North American country to experience Facebook’s new dating feature when it rolled out on Friday.  “Facebook Dating” has users create a profile which is separate from their regular Facebook profile, and it is kept out of sight of their friends.  It recommends matches that users aren’t already friends with, but who share dating preferences, interests and if they’d like, mutual friends or groups and events.  Facebook Dating supports text-only conversations between matches in an effort to minimize “casual encounters” and to build long-term relationships.
(Lovely.  Now instead of being ‘unfriended’, I can be ‘friend-zoned’!)
(Yes, your dating profile is kept out of sight of friends…but remember that Facebook is the site that accidentally leaked the personal info of millions of their users…)
(But what if I want to date my friends?)

WHICH CAME FIRST:  THE CHICKEN OR THE LAB:
Scientists claim that they have created lab-grown chicken nuggets, and they could be on store shelves before the end of the year.  San Francisco-based “JustMeat” has announced that they have a new line of products ready to go that includes a range of ‘cultured meats’ – including chicken, beef, pork and seafood which, rather than being made from animals, are grown in a lab using cells from live animals.  They say, for example, to initially get the chicken cells needed to create their lab-grown nuggets, they only needed one feather from the ‘best chicken’ they could find.  In the lab, scientists then selected a single cell, which they grew into ‘chicken’ using nutrients obtained from plants.  The company says their product can be grown antibiotic free, and with significant reductions in land use, water use, greenhouse gas emissions, and energy use.
(I’m pretty sure that one of the chicken nuggets I had last night had a feather in it too!)
(If you told me that this was already a thing, I would have believed you…)
(My new favorite plant!)

WEIGHT-LOSS TRICKS THAT TAKE FIVE MINUTES OR LESS:
⇒ Walk for five minutes each day:  Try carving out time each day for a five-minute walk. It is one of many you can try to move more. (NOT to the donut shop…)
⇒ Place a bowl of fruit on your counter:  A study showed that people who store junk food on their kitchen counters tend to weigh more than those who don’t—and those who display fruit tend to weigh less.
⇒ Drink a glass of water before each meal:  Our bodies often mistake hunger for thirst.  And research shows that drinking water before meals can make you feel fuller, cutting the number of calories you eat. (And if you have teenagers, the food will be gone by the time you are ready to eat!)
⇒ Use smaller plates and bowls:  In a study, when participants received large portions of food, they ate 30 to 50 percent more than those given smaller portions. Plus, they didn’t feel any fuller than participants who ate less. (And if you’re a bachelor, use a smaller pot to make your mac n’ cheese!)
⇒ Pair HIIT with strength training:  If you’re busy, the best workout routine may be a combination of strength training and high-intensity interval training.  (For just five minutes?  That might not even kill me!)
⇒ Put a mirror on your fridge:  In a study, people who ate with a mirror next to them were less likely to eat fatty foods. Researchers believe that a mirror makes you more aware of what you’re eating, leading you to make healthier choices.  (Nobody wants to see me attacking a burrito…including me!)
⇒ Go to bed five minutes earlier:  Lack of sleep is associated with overeating and weight gain.  By getting enough sleep, you can stop food cravings before they start.  Plus, you’ll have more energy to hit the gym.  Five minutes more sleep per day equals 30 extra minutes of sleep each workweek.  (OK, I’m off to bed as soon as I kill this quart of ice cream!)

BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .

• “Fancy Rat & Mouse Day”, a day set aside for people who appreciate pets … that are vermin.
NET: http://www.afrma.org

• “Pizza With the Works Except Anchovies Day”. The world’s first true pizzeria, Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba, opened in 1830 and is still in business today in Naples, Italy. Italian immigrant Gennaro Lombardi opened the first North American pizzeria in 1895 in NYC. Pizza is now consumed all over the world …with or without anchovies.

• “World Pneumonia Day”, an annual forum for the world to stand together and demand action in the fight against the deadly lung inflammation. More than 100 organizations representing the interests of children staged the first observance in 2009.

• “Chicken Soup for the Soul Day”, honoring the sappy series of feel-good books.  Conventional wisdom says that chicken soup works wonders on the common cold.  So, “chicken soup” became a shorthand for a cure-all, a mysterious-but-effective way to solve problems. Hence the book with the same title, which spawned a generation of sentimental spinoffs.

• “Happy Hour Day”, celebrates the time at bars and restaurants when alcoholic drinks are served at discounted prices. Happy hours usually take place for a period of time in the late afternoon—usually for more than an hour, and often between the hours of 4PM and 7PM.
