Never Accept a Generic – Ask For Pure “BS”!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Alec Baldwin has spoken out on Twitter to deny that he punched a 49-year-old man over a parking spot.  The dispute played out in New York’s Greenwich Village, near where Baldwin lives.  He was charged with assault and harassment, and was given a desk-appearance ticket, which means he is due back in court at a future date.  Baldwin wrote: “Normally, I would not comment on something as egregiously misstated as today’s story. However, the assertion that I punched anyone over a parking spot is false. I wanted to go on the record stating as much.” He also claims that the altercation is being reported “for the purposes of clickbait entertainment.”

★ Hugh Jackman’s role in “The Frontrunner” is already getting plenty of awards season buzz, but he won’t walk away with a trophy if Ryan Reynolds has anything to say about it. Taking their friendly feud to the next level, Reynolds tweeted a fake political smear ad targeted against Jackman, asking his followers, “How well do you really know Hugh Jackman?” Not to be outdone, Jackman responded by sharing a short video that perfectly encapsulated how he felt about Reynolds’ video. In his response, which was only nine seconds long, Jackman is shown cleaning up after his dog, and as the camera zooms in, it becomes clear that his dog had done his business on a photo of Reynolds in his “Deadpool” costume.
(Speaking of a “smear” campaign…)

★ Six “Brady Bunch” cast members gathered Thursday in Los Angeles at the home that was featured in the opening and closing of the sitcom. HGTV purchased the home in the Studio City neighbourhood in Los Angeles for its new series, “A Very Brady Renovation.” Maureen McCormick, who played Marcia, along with Barry Williams, Christopher Knight, Eve Plumb, Mike Lookinland and Susan Olsen walked through the two-bedroom dwelling. The interior layout does not resemble what was featured on the show, as those scenes were shot in a studio.  HGTV plans to expand the home without compromising its street view and reimagine the show’s interior design.

★ Get ready to dust off those bellbottoms, because Austin Powers could be coming back to the big screen. It’s been 16 years since “Goldmember,” the last Powers film, was in theaters, and fans of the franchise have been clamoring for a reinstatement since then. According to star Mike Myers, a fourth film is a real possibility.  Myers said:  “It’s looking good, it’s just tough, you know, it takes a long time to write the script, you want it to be fantastic.”
(Yeah, baby!)

BS MUSIC NOTES:

• Drake — says he was blocked from gambling at a Vancouver casino on Friday night, and accuses the venue of racial “profiling”.  The luxury resort Parq Vancouver says it’s looking into the allegations.
• Justin Bieber – Celebrity tattoo artist Bang Bang says he gave Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin matching ink — and Bieber’s is on his face.  He didn’t give any more detail except to say, “Bieber’s tattoo is next to his eyebrow and includes “little words.”
• Britney Spears – Her new Las Vegas residency show was announced to tremendous fanfare last month, but it seems that ticket sales aren’t matching the excitement. Reports are that that more than half of the tickets for the first month of her shows remain unsold.  Her “Domination” concert series is set to begin in February.
• Aerosmith – singer Steven Tyler claims that has become an ordained minister.  He flashed his “officiator’s card” to reporters, saying: “I went online, paid 80 bucks, and I became a father. God knows I’ve been a mother for so long.” He claims to have already presided over his son’s marriage.
• Ozzy Osbourne – His wife Sharon has admitted to drugging him in an effort to find out about his affairs.  Ozzy had an affair with hairdresser Michelle Pugh, which came to light in 2016 – and in a new interview, Sharon says that she gave her husband extra sleeping pills to get him to tell the truth. Quote: “I put an extra two in his drink and asked him everything, and everything came out.”
• Bruce Springsteen – His historic sold-out series of performances of his one man show “Springsteen On Broadway” wraps up on December 15.  The day before that, he’s releasing a two-CD “Springsteen On Broadway” soundtrack. And December 16, Netflix begins streaming a filmed performance of the Broadway show.
• Cole Swindell – will be among the country stars singing on “Dancing With the Stars” tonight.  Also performing while contestants dance: Lauren Alaina, LANCO and Carly Pearce.
• Chris Stapleton – has announced that he and his wife Morgane are expecting their fifth child. He was performing Friday night at Madison Square Garden in NYC when he told the crowd that “there’s four for us, but we’re gonna make it five.”  The couple had twins earlier this year when boys Macon and Samuel were born.

GREEN LEAVES:
The leading conservation group in Canada is asking people NOT to rake their lawns.  Andrew Holland, a spokesman for the Nature Conservancy of Canada, says that leaving your leaves exactly where they fall is the environmentally friendly thing to do.  Leaves provide a space for many small creatures to survive the winter, such as butterflies, moths and different kinds of insects.  It’s also good for frogs and toads. Plus, the insects that seek shelter in leaf cover can provide food for birds in the spring. If you’re worried about smothering your lawn, leaves can be tucked under bushes or in other areas away from your house.  Holland says if you do that, the leaves will provide good mulch for shrubs and help prevent the freeze/thaw cycle in the roots through the winter.
(My neighbor will be so happy to hear that he doesn’t have to blow them into my yard this year!)
(Does this apply to the leaves that land in gutters, too?  Asking for a friend.)
(Insects provide food for birds in the spring?  I didn’t even know they could cook!)

LITTLE MISS MUFFET WAS ON TO SOMETHING:
A study shows that eating cottage cheese as a bedtime snack can boost your health without leading to weight gain.  Researchers at Florida State University were investigating the effects of eating what are known as whole food proteins, and their effect on muscle recovery and metabolic rate.  What they found was that when test subjects snacked on a 30-gram serving of cottage cheese between 30 minutes to an hour before bed, and two hours after their dinner,  it was found to aid a person’s overall health, as well as metabolism and the quality of muscle tissue. Michael Ormsbee, associate professor of nutrition, food and exercise sciences at Florida State University who co-authored the study, says that the study shows that whole foods can work just as well as protein supplementation.
(This is GREAT!  Except for the part about eating cottage cheese…)
(I wonder what kind of potato chips they used…)
(Sorry, but to me, the only “cottage cheese” worth eating is the kind you put on your burger after jumping off the dock all afternoon!)

THINGS YOU’VE PROBABLY NEVER HEARD IF YOU WERE BORN AFTER 2000:
→ A Beeper:  Professionals—especially doctors—were paged for emergencies.  At first, the ‘beeper’ produced a single tone.  By the ‘70s, pagers added a voice feature.  (Beepers: favorites of doctors and drug dealers…)
→ Your friend’s phone numbers:  Before smartphones with contact lists, people would have to store phone numbers in paper address books—or memorize them.  (We sometimes PHONED people too!)
→ The dial-up sound:  Not so long ago, the dial-up connection sound consisted of a satisfying symphony of a short dial tone, immediately followed by a phantom dialer, beeps, tones, static, and other alien sounds, until—poof! You’re connected.  (And from there, it was only about 15 minutes until you could load a web page…)
→ Double ding at the gas station:  You would hear a chime as you drove over the hose extending on the ground from the gas pump area.  (They disappeared about the same time as the guy who washed your windows!)
→ The click of the channel changer:  Not only did you have to get off the couch to turn the knob that changed the channel (producing that pronounced ‘click’ sound), but you might also have had to adjust the TV antenna to get a better picture!  (And [horrors!] you even had to walk across the room to adjust the volume!)
→ Scroll of a disposable camera:  Before smartphones, disposable cameras were an inexpensive way to take pictures. A quick click and the picture was taken, but it was hard to take action shots because you had to quickly rotate the dial to advance the film. (And remember waiting…forever…to get your pictures developed?)
→ “You’ve Got Mail”:  Around 1998, when AOL users opened their email account, they would hear the friendly notification, “You’ve got mail,” and a pleasant “Goodbye” when they logged off.
(If you were born after 2000, you probably also never heard “MMM-Bop’, so count your blessings…)

A BRIEF HISTORY OF DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME:
As of 2 am Sunday, clocks across North America fell back an hour. So why do we do this?
✓ The idea of ‘Daylight Saving Time’ was 1st proposed in 1895 by New Zealand entomologist George Vernon Hudson, and although people were interested, it never caught on.
✓ In 1905, William Willett came up with the same idea in London. Why? He was an avid golfer who hated cutting short his Summer rounds on the links. Again, the idea failed to catch on.
✓ The Germans and their allies were the first to implement Daylight Saving Time as a way of conserving coal during WW1. Britain and many other European countries followed the example.
✓ The US adopted DST in 1918, but it wasn’t until 1966 that the whole country observed it. All Canadian provinces were on DST by the 1970s, except parts of Saskatchewan which refuse it.
