BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ “Dragon’s Den” star Kevin O’Leary and his wife Linda are being sued for wrongful death by the family of a woman who lost her life in an Ontario cottage country boat crash last summer. The Brito family seeks $2 million in damages. The statement of claim argues that Brito’s death was the result of negligence, and it alleges the O’Learys were impaired by alcohol and drugs, distracted by mobile or other electronic devices and did not have Boat Operators’ Licences at the time of the collision.

★ Avi Gupta amazed “Jeopardy!” fans when he blew away the competition in the 2019 Teen tournament. He walked away with $100,000 in June, but that’s not even the most amazing thing that he has done this year. The 18-year-old wiz-kid has announced that he has donated over $10,000 to cancer research in honor of his new friend and mentor, Alex Trebek. He donated ten percent of his total winnings to the Knight Cancer Institute in Oregon…just in time for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.

★ Sharon Stone is suing rapper and TV personality Chanel West Coast for constantly repeating her name in the 2018 track ‘Sharon Stoned’. Stone alleges the rapper is trying to capitalize on her “extraordinary level of popularity and fame” by repeatedly mentioning her name in the lyrics. She also claims Chanel (real name Chelsea Dudley) has a “penchant for glomming onto celebrity icons,” such as Drake and Kanye West and “has sought to enhance her stature as a rapper by invoking and trading on the celebrity status and fame of others.”

★ CBS is serving up another show from the mind of James Corden. “Game On!” will pit two teams of three against each other, comprised of a mix of sports stars, comedians and celebrities. Both sides will go head-to-head in over-the-top physical challenges, such as seeing who can dunk the most basketballs over a tank of water while harnessed on a bungee cord, while will also having their sports-related knowledge tested with trivia questions. Keegan-Michael Key has been tapped to host the U.S. version.

WORKIN’ 9 TO 1:
Is the 5-hour workday in your future? That’s what some people are thinking after hearing about companies like German-based Digital Enabler, which is already experimenting with the concept. The company’s CEO, Lasse Rheingans, recently implemented a shorter workday as a means for motivating employees and making them more productive. To make it work, everyone must give up their cell phones while working. And there is absolutely no social media browsing or office socializing. Digital Enabler’s employees start work at 8am and they grind it out until 1pm. Apparently, the employees are happier, and they are completing higher quality work. The CEO is hopeful that the shorter day will also prevent workers from burning out and enduring mental health issues as a result.
(What a coincidence! Half the people around here only work a 5-hour workday too!)
(We have that here too. We call it the “Sales Department”!)
(I suppose I’m pushing it if I ask for overtime when I put in a 6-hour workday?)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
An English teacher at a private school in China was forced to make a public apology after buying a fake tuberculosis diagnosis online so he could take a longer vacation. The teacher, identified only as Mr. Du, paid US $67 for a fake chest scan and doctor’s diagnosis, both of which showed that he was suffering from tuberculosis, a serious and highly contagious disease. He then presented the documents to his employers, hoping for a lengthier medical leave, allowing him to prolong his vacation. But because tuberculosis is so contagious and potentially life-threatening, Mr. Du’s school was forced to pay for the medical check-ups of all of his students. As luck would have it, two of the students tested positive for tuberculosis. That forced Mr. Du to pay for another online fake diagnosis, this time showing that he no longer had the disease. (He couldn’t just fake a migraine like the rest of us?)
A tea lover from the United Kingdom has been buried in a coffin designed to look like a box of her favorite tea. 73-year-old Tina Watson had her unusual last request fulfilled at her funeral Friday in Leicester when she was buried in a red Typhoo tea coffin. Her daughter said she gave specific instructions before her death from heart failure, to be buried in a coffin that looks like a giant box of tea bags. Watson was known to guzzle 30-40 cups of tea per day. (And yes, she was buried 6 feet steep…)
