Wow, You Really Know Your Sheet!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Iconic “Survivor” contestant Rudy Boesch has died at the age of 91, and his co-star Richard Hatch is paying tribute to his old friend by reminiscing about their unlikely alliance on the show. After the announcement of Rudy’s death, Hatch tweeted: “Ours was an interesting bond, Dear Rudy! You and I helped open minds and undermine prejudices. While your time here has passed, you will remain loved and iconic, dear friend!” Boesch starred on the debut season of the reality show in 2000 at the age of 72. At the time, he was by far the oldest contestant.

★ Brian Tarantina, known for his roles in hit shows like “Gilmore Girls” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” died of an apparent overdose in his Manhattan apartment, according to multiple reports. The 60-year-old was apparently found by his niece around 12:30 AM on Saturday. According to police, she told them she had showed up to check on Tarantina and discovered him unresponsive on his couch. His niece called 911 and when responders arrived, they pronounced him dead on the scene.

★ Matthew McConaughey is giving back. On Friday, the actor (who turns 50 today) teamed up with the disaster relief organization Operation BBQ Relief and Wild Turkey Bourbon to cook, prepare and deliver meals to first responders as multiple wildfires raged across his “second home” of California. He helped put together 800 dinners, which were delivered to over 20 fire stations. An additional 800 meals were also prepared for local homeless shelters.

★ Lori Loughlin and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, entered not guilty pleas on Friday to the three-count indictment against them in the college admissions scandal. The couple is accused of paying $500,000 to get their two daughters admitted to the University of Southern California on phony athletic credentials. Other parents have been sentenced to terms ranging from probation to five months in prison. If Loughlin and Giannulli continue to fight the charges, a trial is expected sometime in 2020.

AND THE RICH GET POORER…
If you aren’t happy with the result of the World Series, please take a moment to think of poor Jim McIngvale. Well, he’s not exactly ‘poor’, but he’s a lot poorer than he was before the clincher, where the Washington Nationals took the series 4 games to 3 over the Houston Astros. The man known as “Mattress Mack” had some pretty serious Benjamins riding on the Astros. In fact, had they won, he would have been in line to collect roughly $25 MILLION! Alas, it was not meant to be. McIngvale, who owns “Gallery Furniture”, had spent the past month betting millions on his beloved Astros to win the World Series as a means of hedging a season-long promotion running at his furniture stores that promised to refund all purchases of more than $3,000 if the Astros brought home the title. Well, he didn’t have to come clean on refunding all those purchases, but he did lose a lot of money on his hedge bet. How much? Just $13 million. But don’t start that GoFundMe for him just yet. Reportedly, his net worth is $75 million.
(It’s still true: The only guaranteed way to make a small fortune out of sports betting is to start with a large fortune!)
(He lost so much money that next month, his will be the only mattress in the world that won’t be having their “BIGGEST SALE EVER!!!!!”)

PROPER TRAINING:
All those Halloween treats, and you can’t eat them on the way to work. That’ll be the case next year in China, at least. Beginning April 1st, the country’s Ministry of Transport is banning all eating and drinking on its subways. Food consumption on public transportation has long been a contentious issue in China. While some do like to chow down during their morning commute, others have complained of the odors emitted and trash generated. And that’s not all. Also on the banned list is what they are calling any “uncivilized behavior”, which includes lying down, stepping on seats, manspreading and the playing of music or videos on speakers. The Ministry of Transport has not yet specified punishments, but for a similar ban that went into effect in Beijing in 2015, commuters are fined $70. Babies, young children and people with medical conditions are exempt from the prohibition on eating and drinking.
(If I’m paying 70 bucks, I’m going to come up with behavior that’s a lot more uncivil than that!)
(I know there are some days when 70 bucks to hear my jam is worth it!)
(If they banned uncivilized behavior on the subway around here, people wouldn’t know WHAT to do!)

TIME FOR A CHANGE:
With the end of Daylight Saving Time on the weekend (for North Americans), here is what you need to know:
➢ Time changes began in Canada just after the turn of the 20th century and were widely adopted in North America and Europe during the First World War as an energy-saving measure.
➢ The seasonal time shift is observed by most of North America, except for Arizona, Hawaii, most of Saskatchewan a few communities in Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia, and some overseas American territories.
➢ Some scholars have proposed doing away with seasonal time changes because the rationale that it saves energy is no longer relevant with modern technologies. British Columbia is in the process of tabling legislation to eliminate seasonal time changes.
➢ In addition to the hassle of adjusting the clocks twice a year, there has been persistent research showing the possible negative health effects of seasonal time changes. Academics have pointed to the disruption in people’s sleep cycles as the reason there are often more vehicle crashes, heart attacks, and workplace accidents following a time change. Shorter daylight in the evenings following the time change in the fall has been linked to increased depression.
➢ The end result? More sunlight earlier in the morning, and a darker commute home. (but only for about 4 months…)
(Personally, I’d much rather turn my scale back…)
