Deja Moo!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Vanna White stepped in to host “Wheel of Fortune” on Friday after host Pat Sajak had emergency surgery. The announcement was made Friday afternoon that Sajak was rushed to the hospital for a blocked intestine on Thursday, resulting in the cancellation of a “Wheel” taping. Sajak is said to be resting comfortably and “looking forward to getting back to work”. As soon as “WOF” announced the news on Pat Sajak, fans began flooding their Instagram feed with positive vibes and messages of love while the legendary TV host recovers.

★ Bill Murray is returning to screens for the upcoming “Ghostbusters” movie in 2020. He’s long been rumored to be reprising his role as fan-favourite ‘Dr. Peter Venkman’ in the new movie, but now co-creator Dan Aykroyd has confirmed the news. Ackroyd says that Murray, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts have all completed filming on the movie, and that “Jason Reitman wrote a beautiful, heartfelt script that takes the real DNA from the first two movies and transfers that directly to the third, the next generation.” Murray also recently landed himself a new side gig (if he wants it) after jokingly asking to work at an airport restaurant in Atlanta.

★ Woody Allen has settled his breach of contract lawsuit against Amazon, which canceled a four-picture deal with the him amid the #MeToo movement. Allen filed suit in February, alleging that Amazon had unilaterally backed out of the deal due to a “25-year-old baseless allegation.” Allen’s daughter, Dylan Farrow, has long alleged that he raped her when she was seven years old, and Allen has long denied the charge.

★ ABC’s beloved comedy, “Fresh Off the Boat,” is coming to an end. The show will wrap up February 21 with an hour-long finale to season six — which is currently airing. It was one of the only shows prominently featuring an Asian-American family, and was heralded upon its 2015 debut for being one of the first to bring a long under-represented group to Hollywood’s small screen. The last big network show to feature an Asian-American family was Margaret Cho’s “All-American Girl,” which aired in 1994 and was canceled after a single season.

BS MUSIC NOTES:

• Billie Eilish – Her fans will be able to earn free tickets to her upcoming tour by helping to fight climate change. She has joined forces with Global Citizen to offer fans free tickets through the organization’s Rewards platform. Shows will also feature a ‘Billie Eilish Eco-Village’, an area where fans can learn about climate change and the importance of making a difference.
• Ric Ocasek – estranged wife Paulina Porizkova says she learned that she was cut out of his will “the day after he passed”. Though the pair had been separated for nearly three years when Ocasek died in his New York City home in Sept., they were not legally divorced and were still living together.
• Black Crowes – After months of speculation, they are set to reunite next year in honor of the 30th anniversary of their debut, “Shake Your Money Maker”. A tweeted photo of a billboard in New York City says the band will be playing on July 17 in Holmdel, N.J., and the next day in Wantagh, N.Y. The sign adds that they will play the 1990 record “in its entirety plus all the hits.”
• Mötley Crüe — Vince Neil has slammed reports suggesting his weight and substance issues and a feud with drummer Tommy Lee are preventing the band from reuniting for a tour. Neil tweeted that there is no such deal on the table, and quote: “There is no tension between me and Tommy. Don’t believe anything from these so-called gossip sites.”
• Ozzy Osbourne – On Friday, he released ‘Under the Graveyard’, his first single in almost a decade. It is the first track from his forthcoming album “Ordinary Man”, which is scheduled to drop in early 2020. It features Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan and Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers on drums.
• John Prine – will headline the 60th anniversary edition of the Mariposa Folk Festival. The Mariposa Folk Festival features more than ten stages of folk-roots music, along with presentations of story, dance and craft. It runs July 3-5, 2020 in Orillia, ON.
• Thomas Rhett – will make a “special” performance at the 2019 American Music Awards. He’s teaming up with Wells Fargo to help raise awareness for its Holiday Food Bank benefiting Feeding America. The AMAs will be broadcast live November 24th on ABC.
• Carly Pearce — busked in a New York City subway station on Tuesday as part of the YouTube series “Subway Creatures”, where artists perform by surprise in underground subways. She alerted her New York fans just hours before her impromptu set took place.

PUPPY LOVE:
A new study has found that you shouldn’t yell at your dog. Science Alert is reporting that puppies taught with yelling and leash-jerking were found to be more stressed than other dogs, and more “pessimistic” in cognitive tests. Pups that experienced calm, gentle teachers, however, performed better at tasks assigned to them, such as locating a bowl with sausage in it — in a roomful of empty-but-sausage-smeared bowls. More harshly trained canines were slower to locate the treat bowl, which researchers interpreted to show that their experiences had made them more depressed, less hopeful hounds.
(Just like the puppies, I knew there was a jerk at the end of that leash!)
(So, like children, puppies shouldn’t be yelled at. Unlike children, puppies can’t be grounded…)
(The only yelling around our dog comes from our neighbors when I forget to bring a doo-doo bag…)

DIDN’T SEE THIS COMING:
Women in Japan are fighting back against workplaces that ban female employees from wearing glasses to work. Using a hashtag which translates to “glasses are forbidden”, the viral backlash comes after a recent TV program that spotlighted the many companies which ban female workers from wearing glasses on the job. Employers mostly cited appearance-based reasons for not letting women workers wear their eyewear, including a retail chain’s management who felt that female shop assistants had a “cold impression” when they wore frames. Airlines inexplicably cited safety reasons. Beauty industry managers said makeup couldn’t be seen behind glasses, and traditional restaurants said they clashed with traditional outfits. The latest workplace controversy in Japan follows backlash earlier this year over corporate dress codes that included requiring women to wear makeup and high heels to work.
(Wouldn’t it be a safety concern if airline workers WEREN’T wearing their glasses?)
(Someone’s is making a spectacle of themselves…!)
(The ironic thing would be if they had awesome vision care in their health plan!)

MERCURY RISING:
The solar system’s smallest planet will be visible from earth today. Mercury will resemble a tiny black dot as it passes directly between Earth and the sun starting at 7:35 a.m. EST. The 5 ½-hour “Mercury transit” event will be visible, weather permitting, in the eastern U.S. and Canada, and all Central and South America. The rest of North America, Europe and Africa will catch part of the action. Unfortunately, Asia and Australia will miss out. For viewing, telescopes or binoculars with solar filters are recommended. NASA will broadcast the transit as seen from the orbiting Solar Dynamics Observatory, with a brief lag. Mercury’s next transit isn’t until 2032.
(Which, by then, we should be able to view from Mars…)
(I can’t wait to hear from all the “flat-Mercury’ers” about this!)

LEST WE FORGET . . .
Six things you probably didn’t know about poppies:
➢ There are more than 70 kinds:  The one in Flanders Fields is called “common poppy”, also known as “corn poppy” or even “Flanders poppy.” It is different from the kind of poppy that produces opioids, called the “opium poppy”
➢ Poppy seeds lie dormant until the ground is tilled:  When the soil is tilled to plant, say, corn, poppies often come up too (hence the name ‘corn poppy’). Presumably the digging of graves in Flanders Fields did the same.
➢ The poppy seeds in your bagel are mostly cultivated from the opium poppy:  That’s why poppy seeds are banned in several countries, including China — the worry is that they’ll be used to grow drugs.
➢ The 25-cent coin with the red poppy released by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2004 was the first circulated coin in the world to have color.
➢ About half of all legally grown poppies (for medicine) are grown in Tasmania.
➢ Poppies have been used by humans for thousands of years as traditional medicine. The remains of Neolithic humans in the Alps have been found with a pouch containing wheat, barley, and poppy. All poppies produce compounds that can have medicinal effects. The Flanders poppy makes a compound called rhoeadine that has effects on people, but it’s very mild compared to opium.

DID YOU KNOW?
The Royal Canadian Mint has released a set of Christmas coins for 2020. The new silver coins feature a collection of Christmas cookies. Sitting right on top of those cookies is a decorative gingerbread man. The smiling gingerbread men are made of Murano glass, and according to the Mint’s website, the coins are meant to look like a platter of cookies that one might leave out for Santa. Face value: $20.

It has developed into a major shopping day for gifts to woo that special someone. It’s scheduled on 11-11 because it’s the date with the most ‘singles’. (***See “Today’s Record”, below***)

• “Metal Day”, in honor of the classic metal mockumentary “This is Spinal Tap”. Metal declares independence from the mundane and conventional while insanity, alienation, and death are the foundation for gloomy introspection, which is all part of the culture!
