Here’s More Bull Roar!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ According to John Goodman, the cast and crew on “The Conners” definitely miss Roseanne Barr, who lost her job after tweeting racially-charged remarks in the summer. During his appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, Goodman explained that the cast and crew are like a family after working together for so many years. Goodman said that the previous year on the show was a miracle, so when it all went away, it felt like it was a dream.

★ Ellen Pompeo isn’t setting an end date for “Grey’s Anatomy” just yet. The longtime star of the popular medical drama made headlines when she indicated that she may be ready to hang up her scrubs following the end of the 16th season, which would also mark the end of her two-year contract extension. Grey’s creator Shonda Rhimes has said that she and Pompeo will mutually decide on when to end the show.

★ Rosie O’Donnell is engaged.  She quietly proposed to Elizabeth Rooney, her girlfriend of nearly a year.   Apparently, O’Donnell popped the question sometime in the summer, but she and the 33-year-old police officer decided to keep the news under wraps for a while due to Rooney’s job.

★ ‘Harry Potter’ star Rupert Grint says he has an ”embarrassing” relationship with money. Grint, who starred as Ron Weasley in the ‘Harry Potter’ film series – has become known for spending his fortune on some unusual items over the years, including an ice cream van and a hovercraft.  Now, he says that it’s taken him longer than it should have to develop a more mature attitude towards money. Quote:  ”It took me a while to accept a relationship with money . . . I do buy weird stuff but I stopped that now. I’ve grown out of that a bit.”
(I’ve got the same problem.  Except I don’t have the money!)

★ Nick Cannon is set to host his own late-night show. Cannon will team up with Fox to create a weekly topical series that will cover pop culture and feature high-profile celebrity interviews, music performances, and stand-up comics. He will serve as Executive Producer on Fox’s new celebrity reality show ‘The Masked Singer’, which is set for ten episodes beginning in January.  That will feature celebrities singing in a head-to-toe costume and face mask which conceals their identity from other contestants, panelists, and the audience.

• Meek Mill – His latest good deed is his plan to renovate a basketball court at East Fairmount Park in North Philly. He specifically chose that park because it’s in the neighborhood where he grew up.
• Taylor Swift — After she broke her political silence by sharing her views and which candidates she plans to vote for, Vote.org reported 65,000 new voting registrations in the 24-hour period after her post. Other stars encouraging their fans to register to vote in the upcoming midterms include Rihanna, John Legend, Ludacris, and Paramore’s Hayley Williams.
• Def Leppard — are among the 15 acts nominated to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the first time. Next year’s inductees will be revealed in December, with the induction ceremony planned for March.  Also among those up for consideration:  The Cure, Devo, Janet Jackson, LL Cool J, Stevie Nicks, Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, and Todd Rundgren.
• Sting — was forced to cancel his San Francisco concert an hour before showtime on Monday due to voice problems.  A statement said, “I’m sorry to have to postpone tonight’s show… but I can barely speak right now.”  (We’ll assume it was a written statement…)
• Faith Hill — has signed on to judge CBS’s “global competition series” The World’s Best, along with RuPaul and Drew Barrymore. It will feature acts from every genre around the world, and competitors must impress a global panel as well as the slate of American judges.
• Darius Rucker – hosted “An Opry Salute to Ray Charles” on Monday night.  The celebration was recorded for a television special that will premiere in February.  Among the performers of Charles’ music: Cam, Brett Eldredge, Ronnie Milsap, LeAnn Rimes, Travis Tritt, Chris Young and Boyz II Men.

GOING POSTAL:
Now that we’ve managed to demonize any restaurant that has the audacity to dare serve us a straw with our drink, and now that we’ve managed to shame grocery stores into forcing us to bring our own bags, it seems people have turned their attention to the next public enemy #1…potato chip manufacturers!  Or rather, potato chip BAG manufacturers!  A political activist group has targeted Walkers, the largest ‘crisps’ company in Britain, for the 7,000 non-recyclable packets of salty, crunchy goodness that they are said to produce every minute. That’s 11 million plastic bags of chips per day.  Members of the chip-buying public are being encouraged to mail empty packages to the company’s Leicester headquarters once they’re done with them.  The #PacketInWalkers campaign asks consumers to snap photos of themselves depositing Walkers crisps packets into mailboxes. To prevent generating further waste, most aren’t using envelopes at all, opting to attach mailing labels directly to the chip bags.  It might prove a point, but Her Majesty’s Royal Mail isn’t impressed.  While the postal service is obligated by law to accept and process the packets as mail, the fact that they’re being sent without envelopes means they have to be hand-sorted so they don’t damage machinery.
(Is this the ‘stamp-out’ plastic campaign?)
(Chip crumbs damage machinery?  Imagine what they do to US!)

IT’S A JUNGLE OUT THERE:
As lawn mowing season ends, scientists are telling us what they should have told us in the spring.  Over an eight-year period, researchers kept count of lawn-mowing-related injuries in the U.S.  The study, published in the journal Public Health Reports, found that of an estimated 51,151 people injured while mowing the lawn, 12,243 of them wound up losing a body part.  Most of the damage was to the hands and feet.  Almost half involved lacerations, and about 22 percent resulted in an amputation.  Eye and face injuries accounted for 1 percent of emergency room visits, and fractures for 22.4 percent. More than 200 people suffered burns from lawn mowers serious enough to be treated in an E.R.  Those in charge of the study say that they are working with university engineering departments with the goal of developing lawn mowers that are “smart enough that no one gets their foot or hand chopped off.”
(And the risk of injury doubles if you accidentally run over your wife’s rose bushes…)
(Eye injuries…just one per cent?  I thought that if I had goggles on, I was good to go!)
(51,000 injuries…and that’s not even counting frogs!)

HOW TO CHARGE YOUR PHONE FASTER:
→ Airplane mode:  The less your phone processor is doing, the faster it will charge. So, putting it into airplane mode can help, but will mean no internet or cellular connectivity.  (You CAN go a few minutes without it, can’t you?)
→ Don’t light up the screen:  The screen is the biggest battery drain, so resist the urge to keep looking at it, if you can.  (I said, you CAN go a few minutes without it, can’t you?)
At least turn off Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS and NFC:  If the temptation to use your phone while it is charging is too much, turn off those battery-draining features to help it charge faster.  (I’m pretty sure I can do without NFC, being that I have no idea what it does…)
Use the ‘fast charging’ feature:  Phone manufacturers have made fast charging a priority in recent years.  Some brands include this feature, which can boost your phone’s charge by 50% in 30 minutes.
Get a different plug:  While Apple smartphones don’t have a fast-charge feature built in, iPhone users can charge their devices quicker by using the wall plug that comes with an iPad. Their larger five-volt/2.4-amp bricks charge the company’s phones faster.  (Problem is, I’ll probably play around with my iPad while my phone is charging…and by the time my phone is charged…)

DID YOU KNOW?
New research confirms that people who grow up with books at home tend to have higher reading comprehension and better mathematical and digital communication skills.  But how many books is enough to make a difference? The magic number seems to be above 80 to result in improved skills.  In the study, literacy continued to improve as the number of books in the home increased to about 350, at which point the literacy rates remained steady.
(After which, let’s face it, you’re living in a thrift shop.)
(I suppose it wouldn’t reflect well on me right now to say, “Well, duh!”)
