★ The editors of this year’s Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue live by the philosophy that there’s “no such thing as too much Kate Upton.” So, yes, she’s back for more in 2018. She has yet to post or repost pictures from this year’s issue. Upton, who is newly married to MLB pitcher Justin Verlander, recently made headlines for accusing Guess co-founder Paul Marciano of sexual misconduct.

★ Bekah Martinez may no longer be competing for Arie Luyendyk Jr.’s heart on ‘The Bachelor’, but she will not be easily forgotten by the show’s fans – and she has her mom to thank for that. Martinez is the one who was reported missing by her mother when she was actually a contestant on the show. She told Jimmy Kimmel that, “First of all, a lot of people thought I lied to my mother saying that I was on a farm when I was actually on The Bachelor, but no, I had already been eliminated from the show.” Martinez also said that she expected to have phone service to call her Mom when she went to the mountains with friends, but it turned out that she didn’t.

★ Former Subway pitchman Jared Fogle is trying to get out of prison any way he can, and now he is dragging Larry Nassar into his fight by using the disgraced Team USA doctor as a benchmark for his own charges. Fogle has filed documents arguing that he should have never been charged with “traveling for the purpose of engaging in illicit sex.” He specifically points out that “Dr. Larry Nasser was not charged with ‘travel for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual conduct,’ yet he clearly engaged in unlawful conducts with young women.”

★ For anyone hoping ‘Seinfeld’ will go the way of ‘Roseanne’, ‘Will & Grace’, and ‘Murphy Brown’ with its own revival, Jerry Seinfeld has two words that are gonna make you freak. “It’s possible,” he told Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show. Seinfeld is currently working on ‘Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee’. However, you might recall that last year, he told ET, “Maybe it’s nice that you continue to love it instead of us tampering with something that went pretty well.”

★ Hannah Simone is ABC’s new “Greatest American Hero.” Simone will play Meera, a 30-year-old woman who loves tequila and karaoke and has spent her life searching and failing to find meaning, much to the chagrin of her traditional Indian-American family. She is entrusted with a super suit to protect the planet, leaving the world in her unreliable hands. The original ‘Greatest American Hero’ aired from 1981-83 and starred William Katt.

★ Charlize Theron will serve as honorary starter for the 60th running of the Daytona 500 on Sunday. It will be her job to wave the green flag for the season-opening race. Joining her will be newly retired driver Dale Earnhardt Jr, who will serve as grand marshal. The role of honorary starter has been previously fulfilled by athletes such as Terry Bradshaw, Richard Petty, Brett Favre, and John Cena, as well as actors like Gary Sinise, Whoopi Goldberg, and Ashton Kutcher. Theron is currently starring in and producing “Gringo”, which comes out next month.

• Taylor Swift – wouldn’t let her dancers hear her unreleased music. She was so cautious about keeping the music from her ‘Reputation’ album under wraps before its release that the dancers in the ‘End Game’ video’ were forced to move to a click track rather than to the actual music.
• Kendrick Lamar – Artist Lina Iris Viktor has accused him of stealing imagery from her work for his new ‘All The Stars’ video with SZA, a song on the soundtrack for Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’ movie. She claims that Marvel approached her twice to ask if Lamar could use her artwork for his video for the song, but she turned him down.
• Britney Spears – will be honored with the 2018 GLAAD Media Vanguard Award. She follows in the footsteps of last year’s winner, actress Patricia Arquette, and the likes of Demi Lovato, Janet Jackson and Jennifer Lopez in receiving the accolade, which recognizes stars who are long-standing allies and supporters of the LGBTQ community.
• Toni Braxton – is celebrating the 25th anniversary of her self-titled debut album by releasing her first solo album in eight years. ‘Sex and Cigarettes’ is set for a March 23 release.
• Foo Fighters – are among the headliners announced for this year’s Ottawa RBC Bluesfest. Also at the top of the bill: Bryan Adams, Jethro Tull, and Beck. Shawn Mendes, Dave Matthews Band, Sting and Shaggy, Three Days Grace and The Strumbellas will also appear at the festival, which will run July 5-15.
• Smashing Pumpkins – their impending reunion has been marred by claims from former bassist D’arcy Wretzky that she has been unceremoniously excluded from participation. But the band claims that they’ve tried to reach out to her many times in the past, to no avail. The reunion announcement is likely coming at noon today when a countdown clock on the band’s website hits zeroes.
• Paul McCartney – has won a prestigious Wolf Prize from Israel. In May, he will be honored with the $100,000 prize for being “one of the greatest songwriters of all time”. No word yet on whether he will attend the ceremony.
• Rascal Flatts – will play a concert before Sunday’s Daytona 500. Charlize Theron will be the honorary starter and retired NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be the grand marshal.
• Jason Aldean – is kicking off his eighth studio album, ‘Rearview Town’, by promoting the lead single, ‘You Make It Easy’ with three videos that cumulatively tell a complete story.
• Willie Nelson – has announced this year’s ‘Luck Reunion’, the concert he hosts literally in his Texas backyard. This year’s event takes place March 15th, and will feature Devon Gilfillian, Nikki Lane, Josh Ritter, and dozens more – led by Nelson and his Family Band.

GOLD TEETH:
The two most important traditions after someone wins a gold medal in the Olympics are these: #1- stand for their national anthem. #2-bite the medal for photographers. Why? Why do medalists chomp down when the press comes ‘round? Mostly because photographers ask them to. Apparently, photojournalists often ask athletes to do something besides just stand there and smile. With no other props handy, winners have picked up the habit of biting down on their medal. What is the significance? Biting down on a hunk of metal is something someone might have done during the Gold Rush to test whether the shiny golden rock they found was actually gold. Human teeth are harder than gold, but softer than pyrite, which was known as ‘fool’s gold’. So if your teeth left a mark, that probably meant that you had gold! If you’re wondering whether anyone has chipped a tooth on their medal, the answer is: of course. In 2010, German luger David Moeller broke off the corner of his tooth chomping on his silver medal. Most Olympians probably know that their gold medal is mostly made up of silver and copper. If they were actually solid gold, the prizes would cost the IOC about $17 million.
(It’s a good thing they aren’t made of tinfoil!)

BODY FILL:
It’s certainly not an Olympic event, but I’m sure you have heard of speed-eating competitions. But what effect does eating quickly have on obesity? Japanese researchers went through data on 59,000 people who had a Body Mass Index in the ‘overweight’ category, and found that eating quickly and obesity are definitely related. According to the study, one reason for the link between scarfing your food and increased B-M-I is that fast eaters tend to continue to eat after they are technically ‘full’, because it takes the body about 20 minutes to sense that it has eaten enough. So even though fast eaters have eaten adequate calories, their body doesn’t ‘know’ that yet, so they keep eating.
(I came from a big family…you ate fast or you ate nothing!)

• You Can Only See Real Faces in Your Dreams: The faces you see in your dreams are those of real people. Although you may not consciously remember seeing that face until it appears in a dream because of the dozens of people that you probably see each day, dreams only contain the faces of people who you’ve seen at least once in your real life. (I believe my face would fall in the ‘nightmare’ category)
• You Can Experience Sleep Paraylsis: 40% of dreamers claim to have experienced this at least once. This phenomenon takes place when a sleeper awakens and is unable to move for as long as one minute. Why? When our body prepares to sleep it releases chemicals which prevent sleep walking. Sometimes, our mind “awakens” before our bodies, and this horrifying experience takes place for a few seconds until we are fully awake.
• You Dream a Lot: Most people have 3 to 5 dreams every night. That makes more than 2,000 dreams every year. Each of these dreams can range from 4 minutes to half an hour. (So those people who claim they never dream? They’re dreaming!)
• You Might Know When You Are Dreaming: ‘Lucid dreams’ are dreams in which people are aware that they are dreaming. In a lucid dream, the dreamer has some control of their dreams. The person is able to manipulate their experiences in the dream environment. These dreams can be realistic and vivid, and can often turn into nightmares. (Well…someone didn’t do a very good job of manipulating things in their dreams, did they?)
• Premonitions: Many people have claimed to have dreamt about something that was going to happen which then actually took place. Nobody knows if this is possible but some scientists say that premonitory dreams are our brain’s powers of deduction. (Well, I dreamt I woke up…does that count?)

• “Gumdrop Day”, honoring the popular, gelatin-based candy which has been a favorite for decades. Nowadays, ‘Gummi’ candies are the most popular incarnation of the gumdrop.

• “National Flag of Canada Day”, the 21st annual official celebration of Canada’s maple leaf flag. It was first unveiled on Ottawa’s Parliament Hill in 1965, replacing the ‘Red Ensign’.

• “Hippo Day”, celebrating the third largest mammal on Earth. Why not take some time to waddle in a mud bath, get angry with some tourists, and yawn a lot while opening your mouth really-really wide?
