BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Prince Harry and Meghan have named their new dog “Oz,” according to royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith.  The newly married couple didn’t share the significance behind the name, but they are planning to visit Sydney, Australia in October for the opening to the Invictus Games.  But that could just be coincidence, because Bedell Smith notes that “I doubt that Meg was just looking at her planner and then was like, ‘why don’t we name this dog after an upcoming trip?’”
(Obviously named after Ozzy Osbourne…)

★ Peter Dinklage, the star of an upcoming biographical drama about Hervé Villechaize, has responded to charges from social media users that he’s “whitewashing” the roles formerly characterized by the famous dwarf actor. Dinklage notes that Villechaize was not actually of Filipino descent, despite claims by some people online. Villechaize was actually born in France and was of English and German descent.  Dinklage will star as Villechaize in HBO’s “My Dinner With Hervé, along with Jamie Dornan.

★ When the Roseanne reboot “The Conners” airs in the fall without her, Roseanne Barr says she will be far, far away.  In her latest appearance on the Rabbi Shmuley podcast, Barr said that she has an opportunity to go to Israel for a few months and study with her favorite teachers.  Barr said that…quote:  “I have saved a few pennies and I’m so lucky I can go … and study with any rabbi that I can ask to teach me, and it’s my great joy and privilege to be a Jewish woman.” Barr said she wishes no ill will on anyone still associated with the show.

★ Legendary Apollo 11 astronaut Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin took a swipe at the upcoming movie “First Man” because of director Damien Chazelle’s decision not to show the planting of the American flag on the moon during the historic 1969 mission. The 88 year-old, who was the second man to step on the moon, posted historical photos of the flag-planting and added the hashtag “Proud to be an American.”  Despite the controversy, star Ryan Gosling, a native  Canadian, has defended the decision not to portray the flag-planting scene, saying at the Venice Film Festival that the decision was deliberate because the moon landing “transcended countries and borders.”

★ Steve Guttenberg says there is a new ‘Police Academy’ movie on the way. Responding to a Twitter user who asked him to film another installment, Guttenberg responded, “Adam, the next Police Academy is coming, no details yet, but it is in a gift bag being readied!” So far there are seven films in the Police Academy franchise, the first was released in 1984. Guttenberg starred as Officer Mahoney in a number of them, but not all.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Taylor Swift – was stunned to discover that the state of Minnesota had declared Aug. 31 “Taylor Swift Day” in recognition of her Minneapolis concert on Sept. 1.  She urged fans to be ”kind” to themselves and not give in to pressure to try and be perfect.
• Drake – is showing off his new huge owl pendant on Instagram, which is made of “over a kilo of gold & and over 100 carats of Asscher cut diamonds,” according to a Beverly Hills jeweler.  The diamond-and-gold owl is attached to a chain, and appears to larger than his palm.  Drake’s caption: “New bird.”  (Because he can.)
• Aretha Franklin – Her estate may become a bone of contention between family members. It seems her family are embarking on a legal feud following reports that Franklin did not make a will.  Her $77 million estate was expected to be split equally between her four sons, but now Willie Wilkerson, Aretha’s long term on-off lover, says he deserves a piece too.
• Journey — Steve Perry has ruled out returning to the group because he plans to record more solo songs.  His comeback album “Traces” comes out Oct. 5, and he may even tour behind it.  When asked about a Journey reunion, he said: “No. I think that we’ve gone on our separate ways (***Pun intended?***) and we’re doing great.  Arnel [Pineda] is a great singer and he’s been in the band for 10 years. But yeah, I don’t think that’s where I’m at right now…I have so many other songs ready to be recorded.”
• U2 — Bono says that he is not expected to suffer any lasting damage to his voice after the group were forced to abandon a show in Berlin when he lost his voice “completely”.  He says he will “be back to full voice for the rest of the tour.”  The show has been rescheduled.
• Cheap Trick – Guitarist Rick Nielsen reports that the band’s next album is “almost” done.  Robin Zander had completed his vocal work and Nielsen just needs to finish the “last three guitar solos”.  They plan to release their 20th studio album late this year or in early 2019.
• Miranda Lambert – Her ‘Pistol Annies’ bandmate Ashley Monroe says Lambert didn’t like her at first, “because I was another blond girl singer.  But then she liked my songs, so we became friends.”
• Hunter Hayes – his new song is about a night of debauchery… and documenting the whole thing on social media.  The way he puts it: “’One Shot’ is about a night that I don’t remember…but Instagram does.  I wrote it assuming no one else would hear it, so it almost borderlines on TOO honest.”

BUSINESS TRIP:
We’ve all heard of musicians and artists who claim that certain substances help with their creativity.   But can small doses of psychedelic drugs like LSD or magic mushrooms help you in the workplace? That’s the premise of a new trend known as “microdosing” that has become popular in places like Silicon Valley, where advocates claim it can help boost creativity, focus and productivity at work.  Some use the drug-taking technique to treat depression and mental illness.  Despite its growing popularity, the supposed benefits so far have been purely anecdotal — but a new scientific study will conduct patient trials to see if there really are cognitive benefits from taking small but regular hits of LSD.  UK-based think tank The Beckley Foundation, which pioneered research into mind-altering substances, and the Imperial College London have launched what is being called the first-ever placebo-controlled trial of microdosing.  Users typically take about one-tenth to one-fifteenth of a regular dose, meaning they avoid any hallucinations while still getting some of the effects of the drug.
(That’s what that kid said he sold me when I was in high school:  Placebos!)
(I don’t know if this stuff can help you in the workplace, but I do know that without it, we wouldn’t have ever heard ‘Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds!’)
(Dropping acid at work?  No thanks.  I don’t even trust myself in public after 3 beers!)

HARD FACTS ON FABRIC SOFTENER:
Sure, you love how your laundry smells and how soft it feels after you use fabric softener or dryer sheets. I totally understand.  But now, a lot of experts are saying that you shouldn’t use either.  Why?  Dryer sheets are woven sheets of fibers coated with acids, scents and a cocktail of chemicals.  Unfortunately, the film from the dryer sheet also coats your entire dryer. Residue from dryer sheets builds up on the filter. Eventually, lint becomes hard to remove because the sticky film has blocked the holes in the filter.  At that point, the lint stays on your clothes.  Fabric softener?  That can clog things up in your washer over time, leading to expensive repairs.  But if you’re not supposed to use laundry sheets in your laundry, what should you do with them?  Here are some ideas:
• cleaning your electronics screens
• freshening your shoes
• dusting ceiling fans
• cleaning bathroom fixtures
• freshening the clothes in your dresser
(Fabric softener can ruin your washer? Does the Maytag Man know about this?)
(I checked my warranty.  Mine should be clogging in about 291 days…)
(They also say that dryer sheets make your towels less absorbent.  Which is funny, because you put dryer sheets in your dryer and they make your towels, which you use to get dryer, less drying!

FROM THE BS POLL VAULT:
A statistical look at who we are and the things we do …
• 72% of married women say they hate September because their husband watches football “all weekend long.”
• 43% of women say buying jeans is stressful.
• 20% of men are jealous of their best friend’s hair.
• 70% of women find it tacky when a man wears multiple gold chains.
• 24% of women say that men who have facial scars are more attractive than men who don’t.
• 45% of people would rather pay bills than clean their shower.

DYING PROFESSIONS YOU SHOULD AVOID:
⇒ Travel Agent:  You know what’s coming.  Thanks to online travel booking sites, everyone is their own personal travel agent these days. The number of travel agents will decline by 12 percent over the next ten years.  (Still, it’s nice to have someone to call and complain to when your reservation goes missing!)
⇒ Bookkeeper:  Blame artificial intelligence.  There are websites which can automatically download your bank account information and prepare a tax form.  Some say the job of bookkeeping will be eliminated within a decade.  (When you said ‘bookkeeper’, I thought you meant ‘librarian’, which also might an endangered species!)
⇒ Lawyer:  The world will always have lawyers, but a lot of the work they do is quickly being taken over by technology.  A lot of the work once done by case researchers can now be done with increasingly sophisticated algorithms. (Still, a good lawyer joke is WAY better than a good computer joke!)
⇒ Middle Managers:  The paper pushing done by middle managers is increasingly being done by enterprise software like Oracle and Salesforce. (But then who would do all the work that upper management decides needs to be done YESTERDAY?)
⇒ Financial Planners:  Tasks once performed by them are quickly being outsourced to planning software, apps, robo-advisors and investing algorithms.  (I get so sick of him telling me to invest more and more every year.  I hope he’s been following his own advice!)
⇒ Postal Workers:  The number of postal workers, including mail carriers and clerks, will drop by 28 percent by 2026. Online bill paying and keeping in touch with friends on social media are the biggest culprits.  (But I thought with the amount that my wife spends on eBay….)
⇒ Floral Designers:  The number of flower arrangers fell 26 percent between 2005 and 2015 and is projected to fall another 17 percent by 2025. Blame the internet and its booming business of flower delivery, as well as a push by supermarkets.
⇒ Broadcaster:  One in 10 are expected to see their job disappear by 2026. Consolidation in the industry, as well as increased use of syndicated content, is fueling the decline. There’s also the explosion of streaming music services. Party DJs however, are seeing an uptick in business with demand for their services projected to grow about six percent by 2026. (I’d better practice scratching records…or whatever it is that they do!)
(The unfortunate thing for me is that I’m a broadcasting middle-manager who does the station’s books!)
