★ Deadpool is so hard to kill that not even the Disney/Fox merger will finish him off. Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that the studio has huge plans for Deadpool, saying, “We will continue in that business.  There’s certainly popularity with those types of films.” He clarified that Disney will be “carefully branding [Deadpool and other R-rated Marvel films] so we’re not in any way confusing the consumer”.
(I think he just confused the consumer!)

★ It’s been ten years for Dr. Mehmet Oz, but he is making a comeback. The NBA Celebrity All-Star game will take place on Feb. 15, and Oz says he is ready to make his return, and a source says he has been practicing. THROWING SHADE:
A book by a German forest ranger claims that trees are a lot more complex than we’re giving them credit for.  Peter Wohlleben, who wrote “The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate”, says that not only are trees able to count, learn, remember, and nurse sick neighbors, they can accommodate their friends by growing their thick branches away from each other so they don’t block their “buddy’s” light.  Wohlleben says that for some reason, some trees have been able to keep the ancient stumps of long-ago felled companion trees alive for centuries by feeding them a sugar solution through their roots. And if that weren’t enough, apparently trees are also able to warn each other of danger by sending electrical signals throughout the forest.  How?  Through a fungal network that he calls the “Wood Wide Web”.
(Do they log-in?)
(He might claim to love trees, but they can’t be very impressed that he made a book out of them!)
(If trees are so smart, maybe they’d be able to answer that question about the bear in the woods…)
-Treehugger

SWIPE RIGHT:
Animal lovers in Lithuania have created a Tinder-style mobile app to match up dogs in shelters with owners.  “GetPet” was launched last month and is attracting hundreds of new users daily.  Users scroll through profiles of “eligible” dogs, which stare at you from the screen with…well, puppy-dog eyes.  If you decide you are interested, you swipe right, of course.  If you swipe left, another dog profile appears.  GetPet has already made a few matches.
(I’m just glad that this isn’t a “mating” app for dogs!)
(Why didn’t I think of that?  Probably because I spend all of my free time on Tinder…)
(Do you think dogs use fake pictures too?)

DID YOU KNOW?
In the year since Elon Musk’s Tesla Roadster was launched into space, it has travelled over 475 million miles, exceeding the car’s mileage warranty more than 13,000 times. Assuming the battery still works, Starman (the dummy astronaut behind the wheel) has listened to ‘Space Oddity’ over 99,000 times in one ear, and to ‘Is there Life On Mars?’ over 133,000 times in the other ear.

– The first ‘modern’ opera was written in 1597.
