★ Tom Hanks has become a Greek citizen. He and his wife Rita Wilson have both officially become citizens of the European country, with Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis marking the occasion with an Instagram post. Wilson is of Greek descent, and the couple own a property on the island of Antiparos. The couple and their children became honorary Greek citizens last year after officials highlighted Hanks’ role in helping raise awareness about the 2018 fires that devastated areas near Athens and claimed the lives of more than 100 people.

★ David Letterman has shared a heartfelt tribute to the late Regis Philbin, who died Friday. Letterman wrote: “Regis is in the same category as [Johnny] Carson. Superlative. He was on our show a million times, always the best guest we ever had, charming, lovable and could take a punch. When he retired, I lost interest in television. I love him.” Philbin racked up 150 appearances on “Late Night” and “Late Show with David Letterman” — more than any other guest in Letterman’s talk show history.

★ Ryan Reynolds is practically Canada’s superhero at this point. And now, he’s now asking his followers to help find a missing stuffed bear. A Herschel backpack was stolen in Vancouver along with an iPad, but it is the bear that owner Mara really wants back. Inside the bear is a voice recording of her mother saying, “I love you I’m proud of you, I’ll always be with you.” Mara’s mother died last year. Reynolds retweeted the story, and is offering a reward of $5,000 to whomever returns the bear. Reynolds wrote: “I think we all need this bear to come home.”

★ The much-anticipated sequel to “Bird Box” – the book that became a smash-hit Netflix film starring Sandra Bullock – is finally finished, according to author Josh Malerman. The Penguin Random House website describes the plot like this: “Twelve years after Malorie and her children rowed up the river to safety, a blindfold is still the only thing that stands between sanity and madness. One glimpse of the creatures that stalk the world will drive a person to unspeakable violence. There remains no explanation. All Malorie can do is survive-and impart her fierce will to do so on her children…Don’t take off your blindfold. AND DON’T LOOK…But then comes what feels like impossible news.” Netflix is currently developing the movie version of the sequel.

• Taylor Swift – her new album ‘folklore’ broke the record for first day album streams on Spotify by a female artist, with 80.6 million, and became the most-streamed album on Apple Music in 24 hours, achieving 35.47 million streams in a single day. It also sold over 1.3 million copies within the first 24 hours of its release on Thursday night.
• Noah Cyrus – released a cover of Mac Miller’s ‘Dunno’. on Thursday. In a press release, she said: “Mac was such a beautiful and respected artist, and his loss was felt around the world”. She’s encouraging fans to support the Mac Miller Fund, which supports youth in underserved areas.
• Whitney Houston – Music mogul Clive Davis says he is ”firmly dedicated” to presenting her ”full story” in an upcoming biopic. He says it is important to focus just as much on her career as her personal struggles, including a battle with drug addiction. The upcoming movie has a working title of “I Wanna Dance with Somebody.”
• Judas Priest – Rob Halford is getting a ReAction figure. The 3 3/4-inch singer comes complete with his classic stage outfit, microphone, and whip. Super 7 is taking pre-orders now. They’ve also made action figures for “Star Wars”, as well as musicians such as Iron Maiden, Misfits and King Diamond.
• Bon Jovi – has announced that their new album “2020” will be released on Oct. 2. The group has recorded two new songs addressing the pandemic and racial equality issues since the album’s originally scheduled release date in May. “American Reckoning” and “Do What You Can” encompass these events.
• Jimi Hendrix – “The Authentic Hendrix Shop” is now online, offering music and exclusive authorized merchandise such as clothes, accessories, collectibles…and face masks. LINK: https://www.authentichendrix.com/store/
• Tucker Beathard — has announced the second installment of his debut album, “King”, and released the lead single ‘Faithful’. Out Aug. 21, King continues the story started with 2018’s “Nobody’s Everything”.
• Blake Shelton – He and Gwen Stefani have made good use of their time in quarantine. The couple released the new duet single ‘Happy Anywhere’ on Friday. He says “there’s never been a better time” for the song, given the pandemic that is keeping people at home for the most part.
• Alan Jackson – is featured on Caylee Hammack’s new version of an old song. ‘Lord, I hope This Day Is Good’ was a #1 hit for Don Williams in the early 80’s. Her debut record “If It Wasn’t for You” comes out Aug. 14, and also features a collaboration with Reba McEntire.
STRESSBUSTERS:
With more and more special events like graduation ceremonies, weddings and family reunions being cancelled due to the pandemic, a new study has found that we could use events like these more than ever these days. Researchers from the University of Connecticut say that rituals, events, and traditions foster significant stress relief. In a release, the research team said: “Normally, rituals like weddings or even a barbecue party serve as a familiar source of comfort for people. Looking forward to and planning for such events help us cope with daily stressors and anxiety, and function as “mechanisms of resilience.”
Unfortunately, the coronavirus is robbing us of many of these events and traditions this year, which partially explains why so many people feel so overrun with stress.

DIRECT STREAM:
Elon Musk, who runs both SpaceX and Tesla, has announced that he wants to stream music directly into our brains. Yup, that’s his latest venture. His startup “Neuralink” plans to make use of an implantable microchip, or a “brain-computer interface”, which will allow wearers to stream music directly into their brain, bypassing the ears. He also says that Neuralink could help control hormone levels and use them to our advantage, whatever that means. The implantation process, which he compares to Lasik laser eye surgery, will involve a neurosurgical robot that fits flexible “threads” into the brain connected to a tiny computer chip. He promises more info about Neuralink on Aug. 28. Can’t wait.

CORONAUPDATE:
➢ Researchers from Kansas State University say there’s one less risk factor to worry about when it comes to the pandemic. According to their latest findings, mosquitoes aren’t capable of spreading COVID-19 to humans. While the World Health Organization has previously stated that mosquitoes cannot transmit the virus, this new study “is the first to provide conclusive data supporting the theory,” according to the researchers.
(Thanks. Now, what about those murder hornets?)
➢ Despite being blamed by some for spreading the coronavirus, bats are better at social distancing than people are, according to a University of Texas study. Scientists found that hypersocial vampire bats were found to “decrease physical social encounters through reduced movement” when they are sick. They also significantly dialed back their grooming and mating habits. And while healthy bats call out for each other when apart, their ill counterparts will vocalize less, effectively reducing “the probability of physical contact between individuals.”
➢ Considering the fact that the aim of wearing face coverings is to reduce the distance that your breath spreads away from your body, rather than to protect the wearer, Simon Kolstoe, Senior Lecturer in Evidence Based Healthcare at the University of Portsmouth, suggests testing your mask’s effectiveness by trying to blow out a candle directly in front of you with your face covering on. A mask which makes it hardest to divert the candle flame will provide the best barrier for projecting the virus forward and through the face covering.

Country Time drink mix company is offering a “bailout” for young entrepreneurs in a seasonal industry hard-hit by the coronavirus pandemic: The lemonade stand. The makers of Country Time Lemonade have announced that its “Littlest Bailout” program will distribute $100 checks to kids under the age of 14 whose lemonade stand plans were foiled by the COVID-19 crisis. Would-be lemonade stand managers are being asked to submit an essay about how they would spend their bailout money along with a photo of the sign they would have used for their stand. Applications are being accepted through Aug. 14.
