BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:

★ Is Joaquin Phoenix getting ready to reapply his makeup? This week, director Todd Phillips alluded on Instagram that a follow-up to the 2019 film “Joker” is in pre-production. The 2-part post opened with the red cover of a script titled “Joker: Folie à Deux”. The binder was dated May 18 and featured his name next to Scott Silver, with whom he co-wrote the first Joker screenplay. A second shot showed Phoenix, who won the Best Actor Oscar in 2020 for his role as ‘Arthur Fleck’ and his alter ego in the first film – casually reading the script on a couch while smoking a cigarette. The title Joker: Folie à Deux, which references a delusion or mental illness shared by 2 people, also suggests that Joker may also team up with another supervillain – possibly his sometime-girlfriend ‘Harley Quinn’, most recently played by Margot Robbie. No word on a release date.

★ Amber Heard is responding after Johnny Depp shared a message to about “moving forward” after the verdict in his defamation trial against her. On Tuesday, his first upload on TikTok was a montage of his recent concert appearances with Jeff Beck, with the caption, “To all of my most treasured, loyal and unwavering supporters. We’ve been everywhere together, we have seen everything together. We have walked the same road together. We did the right thing together, all because you cared. And now, we will all move forward together.” A spokesperson for Heard responded in a statement, saying, “As Johnny Depp says he’s ‘moving forward,’ women’s rights are moving backward. The verdict’s message to victims of domestic violence is … be afraid to stand up and speak out.” Depp has so far gained 4.6 million TikTok followers.

★ Matthew McConaughey is serious about making a real change when it comes to guns in The United States, meeting with politicians and speaking from The White House after the shooting that killed 19 school kids in his hometown. He joined the White House press briefing Tuesday, urging politicians on both sides to take action following the Uvalde shooting — saying that making a difference in the safety of citizens is the best way to honor the lives lost. McConaughey says he and his wife, Camila, spent a lot of time with the families of victims, sharing stories, tears and memories, and now he’s urging those in the highest office to make a change. His words came following a short meeting with President Biden, and a second day of meetings with lawmakers, as Congress mulls over new gun safety legislation this week.

• Travis Scott — has booked his first US festival appearance since a crowd surge at his own Astroworld fest led to scores of injuries and 10 deaths. He’ll headline Day N Vegas, set for Sept. 2-4 at the Las Vegas Festival Ground. Scott was booked to headline Day N Vegas last year, but dropped out as it was scheduled to take place just one week after Astroworld (he was replaced by Billie Eilish).
• Seals and Crofts — Jim Seals, who teamed Dash Crofts on the 1970s soft-rock hits ‘Summer Breeze’ and ‘Diamond Girl’ has died at 80. His death was announced Tuesday by several people, including John Ford Coley, who formed the ’70s duo England Dan and John Ford Coley with Seals’ older brother Dan. Other Seals & Crofts hits include ‘Get Closer’ and ‘We May Never Pass This Way Again’.
• Kiss – Full lineups have been revealed for Kiss Kruise XI, sailing from LA, Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada, Mexico aboard Norwegian Jewel the weeks of Oct. 24 and 29. McGraw says Brown reached out to him early on in his training to provoke a friendly rivalry.

SHOOTING THE BULL

MONEY MATTERS:
➢ During the heights of the pandemic, service workers were seeing more tips as many of us ordered in, and felt appreciative and generous toward those who put their health on the line simply by showing up for work. But according to a new report, we’re tipping less now than we did before COVID-19. According to a survey from CreditCards.com, fewer Americans are leaving tips for restaurant servers, hotel housekeepers and other hospitality industry workers versus before COVID-19, despite vowing to be more generous. At restaurants, 73% said they always tip, down from 77% in 2019, Americans today are also less likely to tip food delivery people, taxi and rideshare drivers, and coffee shop baristas than before the health crisis. Although the survey didn’t ask why, experts have a pretty good idea. They’re blaming inflation, and the fact that staffing shortages can cause longer wait times, making people less likely to tip. Only hairstylists and barbers have benefited from improved tipping habits, according to the survey. (Of course, those are the people who hold sharp instruments held close to your neck…plus they know stuff!)
➢ According to a senior contributor for the finance publication Forbes, companies should be making an effort to significantly increase worker’s compensation in these times of runaway inflation. In an opinion piece, Jack Kelly writes that rather than waiting for employees to ask for a raise, empathetic leaders should proactively look after the financial well-being of their staff and discuss options to help them cope with this new economic environment. He says that if businesses don’t address the needs of their people, the best and brightest will be recruited away or they’ll leave of their own volition to pursue opportunities that offer more money. He also points out that companies have options in addition to an outright pay increase, including bonuses, stock options and enhanced benefits, or offering employees the chance to work from home, thus saving them money on expenses such as transportation and meals. (The way gas prices are going, I’d be happy if my boss just drove me to work!)

PEOPLE YOU DON’T ‘WANNA MARRY’:
OK, if you like to “smoke”, wake up and listen up, because this is important. Those who “consume the herb” may be a little too chill when it comes to navigating conflict with their romantic partner, according to new findings published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence. In a survey, cannabis users were found to be more withdrawn and negative amid conflict with their partners, and more unaware of how poorly they manage those issues. Cannabis users were determined to be less flexible and willing to compromise — yet, paradoxically, also reported higher satisfaction with the outcomes of arguments with their partners, meaning they lack the self-awareness to recognize their adverse engagement.
(On the other hand, when their partner suggested getting tacos, they were ALL OVER IT!)
(It’s not a matter of being withdrawn…it’s just that I’m REALLY INTO this video game right now!)

WHAT THE HAIL?
A Christmas card-like scene was captured a German town, despite the fact that the temperature was in the 70s F (20s C). That was the situation in Weiler-Simmerberg after an intense storm covered the streets with hailstones that accumulated to several feet. Video footage captured Sunday shows tractors plowing the hail as if it were snow. Fortunately, those balmy temps helped quickly melt the fallen hailstones. The piles of hail came from thunderstorms that erupted across parts of western and central Europe this past weekend. The storms also dropped hail the size of tennis balls and softballs from France to Austria. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/3zsfjbkw
(Undaunted, locals managed to clear the local grocery store of all bread, milk and other essentials in the 45 minutes that the hail was around!)
(If this ever happens around here, there’s a 100% chance that I’ll be walking my dog at the time – without a hat!)

WORDS AND PHRASES THAT SHOW YOUR AGE:
✓ “Surfing the web”:  Use of this phrase peaked in 2004. If that seems relatively recent to you, remember — for Gen Z, it was literally a lifetime ago! (Adding “World Wide” in there won’t do you any favors, either!)
✓ “Chesterfield”:  Your grandkids have no idea that by “chesterfield,” you mean “couch”. (And maybe your kids don’t know, either!)
✓ “Heavens to Betsy!”:  Well, of course. NEVER say this phrase, except sarcastically, using your “old person” voice. (Who’s Betsy, anyway?)
✓ “Kodak moment”:  If you use it, you’re probably old enough to remember when people only took pics on special occasions. (And only when they had clothes on, too!)
✓ “Psych!”:  This slang interjection basically means “Just kidding!” If you’re still saying it, you probably REALLY miss the 1990s.
✓ “Going steady”:  I’m not even sure teenagers “date” anymore. These days, apparently, they “hang out,” which means “going steady” sounds terribly old-fashioned. (How ‘bout “necking”?)
✓ “Talk to the hand”:  Yup. Back to the 90s again. (But some people make this one SOOO tempting!)
✓ “Making whoopee”:  This euphemism for sex was popularized by the 1928 jazz/blues song of the same name. There are tons of MUCH more interesting modern phrases to choose from! (Chances are, if you’re still saying ‘Making whoopie’, you’re not still doin’ it!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Mosquitoes learn to dodge pesticides – after just a single exposure. A study by scientists at Keele University in England and the University of Science, Malaysia shows the insects are more intelligent than previously thought. It was found that they recognize the smell of pesticides after being exposed to it once, and steer clear, rendering it ineffective. The authors wrote: “Understanding learning and memory is important for insects that transmit human diseases, because behavior such as host finding and blood-feeding have critical implications for…disease transmission. Mosquito-transmitted diseases include malaria, chikungunya, dengue, yellow fever, Zika and West Nile.
