BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ The first proper teaser for “Wicked: For Good” has arrived, and the characters are looking a lot different than they did when we first met them in Part 1. The clip opens with Cynthia Erivo fiercely staring down the camera, her hair down and outfit changed into a spookier black dress to show how her character, ‘Elphaba’, has fully embraced the role of ‘Wicked Witch of the West’. On the flip side, Ariana Grande — who is the last to appear in the teaser — swapped her Shiz University uniform and pink bubble dress from the first Wicked film for a multi-colored ballgown and tiara, signifying how her character, ‘Glinda’, has leveled up as the people’s princess of Oz. ★ “John Candy: I Like Me,” a documentary from director Colin Hanks and producer Ryan Reynolds, will open the 50th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival. John Candy: I Like Me presents an unvarnished look at the funnyman’s life on and off camera, featuring home videos and candid interviews with his family, friends and collaborators. It’ll screen on Sept. 4 at Roy Thomson Hall. Toronto-born Candy rose to fame on Canada’s sketch comedy show “SCTV” and went on to star in films such as “Spaceballs,” “Uncle Buck,” “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” “National Lampoon’s Vacation” and “Little Shop of Horrors.” He died of a heart attack at age 43 in 1994.

★ Clint Eastwood has no plans to stop making movies. After industry insiders speculated that the legendary Hollywood star was planning to retire after directing last year’s legal thriller “Juror #2”, Eastwood, who turned 95 on Saturday, said: “There’s no reason why a man can’t get better with age.” He also pointed out that he has “much more experience” now than he used to, and while there are some “directors who lose their touch at a certain age…I’m not one of them.”

★ The Savannah Bananas are heading to broadcast TV. The viral baseball sensation will make their broadcast debut on July 27 on the CW, playing their unique brand of “Banana Ball” at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park in front of a sold-out crowd of more than 40,000. If you’ve never seen a Savannah Bananas game, you’re missing out. Clad in their bright yellow uniforms, the exhibition team combines baseball with stunts, fan participation and fast-paced games. It’s not unusual for players to catch balls in the middle of a backflip, or for the entire team to break out into line dancing.

★ Dakota Johnson had some last-minute regrets about her outfit choice on “The Tonight Show” on Monday night, so Jimmy Fallon provided a quick fix. The moment came right at the start of Johnson’s appearance in support of her new film “Materialists.” As she sat down, she looked downward and muttered “Oh god” as she realized her skirt rode up a bit high and the neckline of her top showed a lot, given the angle of the camera. After she pointed out: “This is the wrong outfit”, Fallon said he thought it was perfect. Later, he offered her the best thing he had to cover up: a tissue. She proceeded to tuck it in her top, but then opted to remove it and hand it back to him, prompting the host to joke that he’d sell it online afterward.

SHOOTING THE BULL

TECH PATROL SLOWS YOUR ROLL:
Washington state is cracking down on repeat speeders with some high-tech help. Governor Bob Ferguson just signed the BEAM Act, a new law that targets drivers who’ve had their licenses suspended for reckless driving. The twist? Their cars will now have to be equipped with Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) technology. What’s that? It uses GPS and real-time speed limit data to keep cars in check. Depending on the setup, it might just flash a warning when you’re speeding — or it could actually make it harder (or impossible) to press the gas pedal past the limit. The new law requires the devices as a condition for restricted driver’s licenses following suspensions tied to reckless driving or repeat speeding violations.
(Next up: A seatbelt that whispers “tsk tsk” if you don’t buckle up.)
(Honestly, just let my dad drive. Same effect!)

NEW FOOD NEWS:
❑ Good news for coffee lovers: your daily brew might be doing more than just waking you up. A new long-term study suggests that women who drink 1-3 cups of caffeinated coffee daily in midlife have a higher chance of aging healthily – that means reaching their 70s free of major chronic diseases, and with good physical, mental, and cognitive health. Interestingly, this benefit was specific to caffeinated coffee; decaf coffee, tea, and sodas didn’t show the same effect. So, while coffee isn’t a magic bullet, it could be a helpful part of a healthy lifestyle. (Finally! A health study that doesn’t attack my joy!)
❑ Drinking your sugar may be worse than eating it. A new study from Brigham Young University found that sugary drinks like soda, fruit juice, and energy drinks are more strongly linked to type 2 diabetes than sugary foods. In fact, just one 12-ounce soft drink a day was tied to a 25% higher risk. Even 100% fruit juice wasn’t off the hook, showing a smaller but still real risk. Interestingly, sugar from food didn’t show the same effect—and might even be linked to a lower risk. The takeaway? Skip the sweet drinks, even the “healthy” ones, and chew your sugar instead. (So, sugar in cake is safer than sugar in Coke? Finally, science on my side!)

FROM CRAYONS TO CARRY-ONS:
More and more parents are letting their kids take the reins when it comes to planning family vacations—and it’s paying off. A recent survey of 2,000 American parents found that 22% have allowed their children to plan the entire trip. The result? Happier families. In fact, 82% of parents reported their best vacations occurred when their kids had a say in the planning process. When children are involved, parents usually have them help plan activities (89%) and restaurants (54%). And kids love being involved, with 86% wanting to give more input and 53% expressing a desire to plan most of the vacation. Their dream trips often include meeting celebrities, visiting amusement parks, attending concerts, and enjoying beach days. While some children want to plan epic journeys across multiple states and countries, 40% prefer to explore destinations within their own country, favoring places like Florida, California, and Hawaii. And apparently, parents are embracing their children’s creativity: 84% said they are drawing inspiration from their kids’ ideas — and 88% are planning to bring some of those dream trips to life. By involving kids in the planning process, families feel they’re creating more memorable and enjoyable vacations for everyone.
(If I let my kid plan our trip, we’d end up spending 12 hours a day at Chuck E. Cheese!)
(Kid’s itinerary: breakfast, roller coasters, meet Taylor Swift, bedtime.)

DID YOU KNOW?
More companies these days are adding former employees to their payrolls, a practice known as boomerang hiring, according to a recent ADP analysis. In March, 35% of new hires were returning employees, compared to 31% a year prior, an indication that hitting up a former boss is an increasingly popular job-hunting tactic. ADP attributes the trend to a slower hiring market than during the Great Resignation of 2022, when job-hopping was almost a national sport. These days, employees are more cautious about jumping ship – while employers have become more selective about who they hire, particularly in industries requiring highly skilled workers. (Plus, they know if you’re lying on your resume!)

BS CHRONOMETER 06.05.25

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Hot Air Balloon Day”, commemorating the first hot air balloon flight, by the Montgolfier Brothers in Annonay, France in 1783. (We’re glad it ‘took off’! I’ll shut up now…)
• World Environment Day”, a thing since 1972. The 2025 theme is “End Plastic Pollution”. These are exceptional times in which nature is sending us a message: To care for ourselves, we must care for nature. LINK:  https://www.worldenvironmentday.global/
• “Gingerbread Day”. The term “gingerbread” originally referred to preserved ginger, later referring to a confection made up of honey and spices. While most are familiar with the gingerbread house at Christmas, you might also want to try some delicious gingerbread bread, cake, bars, biscuit and cookie recipes that are perfect any time of the year.
• “Apple II Day”, celebrating this date in 1977, when the Apple II computer was released. A hulking beige mammoth with 4KB of RAM (upgradeable to a whopping 48KB), the Apple II defined the company for a generation. At $1,298, it cost the equivalent of 3 or 4 iPads today — even though it seemed a total bargain at the time.
• “Moonshine Day”. Moonshine, white lightning, mountain dew, hooch, or Tennessee white whiskey is a high-proof distilled spirit, generally produced illicitly. The word is believed to come from the term “moonrakers” used for early English smugglers and the clandestine nature of their operations.
• Attitude Day”. Attitudes are contagious … is yours worth catching? A day to appreciate those whose attitude makes those around them happy. (It’s our attitude at the beginning of a difficult task which, more than anything else, will affect its outcome.)
• “Sausage Roll Day”. Originally a British treat, they have developed a following across the pond, as more and more of us are beginning to understand the delicious appeal of these mouthwatering snacks.
• “Ketchup Day”. In 1812, American scientist James Mease documented the first tomato-based ketchup recipe. It also included sugar, spices, and vinegar, the same base recipe we know and love today. Some ketchup facts…
→ Ketchup was used for medicinal purposes before the 19th century, when many people used tomatoes to treat indigestion and diarrhea.
→ The word ‘ketchup’ became popular during the 19th century and has been the standard name of the condiment since. However, some areas in the southern US still use the word ‘catsup’.
→ Nearly 97% of Americans have ketchup in their homes. And it is so popular that astronauts use it in space.
