There’s No BS Like Show BS …

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:

★ Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott won’t be calling their son Wolf after all. In her Instagram Stories, Jenner wrote: “FYI, our son’s name isn’t Wolf anymore. We just really didn’t feel like it was him. Just wanted to share because I keep seeing Wolf everywhere.” She didn’t reveal her son’s new name in her post, and didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. The baby was born Feb. 2.

★ Trevor Noah insists he doesn’t want Kanye West to be cancelled – just helped. Ye was recently banned from Instagram for 24 hours after using a racial slur towards the “Daily Show” host – who had criticized him for his conduct towards ex-wife Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson. West was also dropped from performing at the Grammys. Noah tweeted: “I said counsel Kanye not cancel Kanye.”

★ Amber Heard is calling on several famous acquaintances for her upcoming defamation trial with ex-husband Johnny Depp. She’s being sued by Depp over a 2018 Washington Post op-ed where she wrote about surviving domestic violence. She’s set to have James Franco, Ellen Barkin, and Elon Musk testify virtually as witnesses for her at the trial. Paul Bettany will testify virtually for Depp, after the star’s texts with Depp were made public in the previous trial between Heard and Depp. This trial is officially set to begin April 11, in Virginia.

★ Hollywood heavy hitters terrified of a dramatic spike in crime are laying out millions for panic rooms. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the rich and famous of posh areas of Southern California have become increasingly paranoid over a worrying spike in homicides and high-profile robberies. Among the stars with panic rooms are Madonna, George Clooney and Paul McCartney. A small, closet-sized panic room runs about $100,000 to $150,000 — and from there, they get expensive. Increasingly, panic rooms are designed with luxury in mind, rather than a cold, steel cell. Others are packed with guns and ammo.

SHOOTING THE BULL

SOUNDING BORED:
There’s nothing worse than being caught in a conversation with someone who is deathly boring . . . but thinks they’re a scintillating conversationalist. Well, science to the rescue. Researchers at the University of Essex investigated what makes people appear boring. They asked over 500 people to rank the most stereotypically boring characteristics, hobbies, and jobs. The most boring jobs were determined to be: accounting, tax/insurance, cleaning, and banking. The most boring hobbies: sleeping (huh?), religion, watching TV, observing animals, and doing math. And what are the characteristics of stereotypical bores? Having no interests, no sense of humor, being unopinionated, or a complainer. The research team concluded: “The more (of these) typical features of stereotypical boringness described a person, the more the person was perceived as boring.”
(I, for one, never liked boring people. So, I keep my mouth shut! See what I did there?)
(I feel personally attacked – except for the part about doing math for fun!)

SOMEBODY’S WATCHING ME:
Ever get the feeling you’re being watched? Or at least listened to? Little wonder. Computer experts are warning that you’re probably right, only it’s not someone watching you, it’s something. The University of Maryland and Penn State computer scientists say billions of digital devices are scanning and sensing your movements every day. Some of them are sitting right in front of you — inside televisions, cars, offices, and even your refrigerator. Roberto Yus and Primal Pappachan say the technological revolution has come with a high price to our privacy as internet connectivity now reaches people in more places than ever before. Yes, smart devices can be handy, like the smart security camera that actually records your activities all day long. And so does Alexa. And you might be surprised to learn that some smart TVs do the same thing. Meanwhile, smart lightbulbs monitor your sleep and heart rate, and smart vacuum cleaners actually map out the interior of your home as it recognizes objects to avoid hitting…and all these things could send information off to its maker through the internet. The computer experts suggest you disable any data collection on these devices that isn’t related to what you want it to do. And when you’re looking to buy a smart device, first find out what data it collects and what the manufacturer’s data management policies are, according to an independent source.
(Wow! I guess being a luddite has its advantages!)
(I’m sure glad there’s nothing smart at MY house! Wait…what?)

LOOK UP AND LOOK OUT:
(***BS’ers – remember all that good news we had on Monday? These might help bring us back down to Earth, so to speak…***)
➠ Space weather experts have spotted the sun ejecting a large mass of particles and believe they could hit Earth late tonight. An ejection like this is known as a solar flare, or a coronal mass ejection (CME). A CME is a huge expulsion of plasma from the sun’s outer layer. These expulsions shoot through space, and if they hit Earth’s magnetic field, they can cause solar storms. Fortunately, the solar storm predicted for tonight is only likely to be a “G1 minor,” meaning you probably won’t even notice it. Experts say it is a “little off target” to cause significant concerns, but it might cause weak power grid fluctuations and have a small impact on satellite communications. The good news? It might also cause very pretty natural light displays like the northern lights.
➠ A huge asteroid that is roughly the same size as the Empire State Building will fly past Earth later this week. The super-sized space rock will hurtle past at speeds of up to 30,000 mph (50,000 kph). According to NASA’s Near-Earth Object database, the 450-meter-wide rock, named 2013 BO76, will miss us by about 3.1 million miles (5 million km) — 13 times the distance between the Earth and moon. While that might sound like a massive distance, in NASA terms it’s labeled a “close approach”. (<Quietly humming ‘I Don’t Want to Miss A Thing’ to myself…>)

DID YOU KNOW?
The password “Password” allowed hackers to break in to a server, steal data and issue a $15 million ransom demand to the victim. The victim was credit reporting giant TransUnion’s South Africa unit, which maintains credit data on more than 24 million people. The attacker was a Brazilian group that calls itself N4ughtysecTU. One of the accounts on the server had been secured with the password “Password”, which takes modern hacking tools about one second to guess.

BS CHRONOMETER 03.23.22

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Chip & Dip Day”. While North Americans might pick ‘Sour Cream & Onion’ or ‘Salt & Vinegar’ chips, the top flavors for ‘crisps’ in the UK include ‘Roast Beef & Mustard’ and ‘Smoked Ham & Pickle’. The Swiss like ‘Paprika’, while Thais choose ‘Prawn’, and in Egypt ‘Kebab’ is popular. The best dip? ‘Hot Bean with Jalapenos’ … or is it?
• “Puppy Day”, the idea is to save 10,000 homeless puppies in a single day by encouraging adoptions at pounds and rescue centers. (My wife slapped me when I told her I’m adopting her a puppy. And I thought she’d be excited to hear she’s getting a little husky…)
• “Cuddly Kitten Day”, whether you are a cat person or dog person, today serves as a reminder to pamper your pet. Have a cuddle and a snuggle, shower him or her with extra love, a few extra treats or a brand-new toy. (How happy are most doggos these days, with the number of people who now “work from home”? And how mad are some cats?)
• “World Meteorological Day”, an annual UN observance to promote understanding of how weather, climate, and water affects us all. For one thing, it seems to be our favorite topic of conversation. What overused weather cliché should be dumped? (Mixed-bag? Dodged a bullet? White stuff? Snowmageddon?)
• “Melba Toast Day”, according to lore, the tiny thin, crispy toasts were first prepared for opera singer Dame Nellie Melba, and were named by the eminent hotel magnate Cesar Ritz. Talk about a pedigree!
• “OK Day”, one of the more versatile words in the English Language, it can mean everything from “just fantastic” to “out of danger.” It got its start as a silly misspelling of “all correct” (‘oll korrect’). The first recorded use of ‘OK’ was in the Boston Post on this date in 1839.
