BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” wants fans to do the time warp again for its 50th anniversary. The musical cult classic’s half-century milestone will be celebrated with a new 4K Ultra remaster that will be released in theaters and on Blu-ray later this year. Released in 1975, the movie stars Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon as a newly engaged couple whose car breaks down, and seek help at the castle of gender-bending ‘Dr. Frank-N-Furter’, played by Tim Curry. Since then, the movie has become famous for its midnight showings and audience participation.

★ “Landman” loves an actor who can rock a Stetson. The Paramount+ drama has added Sam Elliott in a major Season 2 role opposite Billy Bob Thornton. The casting reunites the “1883” star with series creator Taylor Sheridan. Character details are being kept under wraps, but Elliott will be a series regular.

★ “Match Game” is back, once again, this time with Martin Short as host. ABC is bringing the evergreen gameshow back for a new season, 4 years after it last aired. Alec Baldwin hosted the last reboot, which ran for 5 seasons, starting in 2016. The game features 4 contestants each week vying for the chance to win $25,000, as they attempt to match the answers of 6 celebrities in a game of fill-in-the-blank.

★ “Dexter: Resurrection” will premiere with 2 episodes on July 11 via Paramount+, with its on-air debut on Showtime coming 2 days later. The news was a revealed in a teaser for the newest series in the “Dexter” franchise, in which Michael C. Hall reprises his role as vigilante serial killer ‘Dexter Morgan’. In the teaser, he is seen reading a newspaper, and raising his eyebrow and grinning over an article headlined “Dexter Morgan Is Dead.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2s4vjjrx

★ Jeremy Renner is revealing what writing a book about his near-death snowplow accident in 2023 taught him about himself. He appeared on “CBS Mornings” to promote his memoir “My Next Breath”, where he addressed his author’s note, in which he said he “did not want to write this book” and relive the horrifying incident. But he said on the show that what he wants “people to take away from the book [is] getting out of your own way is quite important to achieve and get anything you want in your life, and that’s the lesson that I had to learn.” Renner said the key was to “get of my own way and share the story because I knew it was valuable. He added: “It would be silly of me not to share it.”

SHOOTING THE BULL
JUST THE FATS:
It’s the excuse for my ever-tightening-pants problem that I’ve been searching for: Scientists say they have discovered a biological process that occurs in middle age, which results in the inevitable growing waistline many people experience — even when lifestyle habits remain consistent. The study, published in “Science”, details a previously unknown type of fat cell that shows up in middle age, leading to rapid fat accumulation in the area of the belly. The UCLA scientists who made the discovery say it challenges conventional wisdom about the weight gain that tends to start for many in their 40s. Not only that, they say this information could lead to the development of a drug to target middle aged spread.
(Yeah, it’s called Ozempic!)
(I knew my gut had a mind of its own. Now it has its own cell type, too?)

TECH TALK:
❑ People are relying so much on AI-generated content these days that a new study found we’re more willing to rely on legal advice provided by ChatGPT than by real lawyers – at least when they don’t know which of the 2 provided the advice. When the source of the advice was known, people were still just as likely to accept the legal advice from AI as they were from a bona fide lawyer. The researchers said that one of the risks with accepting legal advice from a computer is that AI sometimes creates so-called “hallucinations” – or outputs containing inaccurate or nonsensical content. (So did my last lawyer – and he charged 400 bucks an hour!)
❑ Researchers say they’ve come up with a new app that is designed to help the estimated 11% of people with mild depressive symptoms, who generally fall through healthcare cracks because they aren’t suffering enough to meet clinical thresholds for treatment. RESiLIENT contains 5 common therapy techniques, and was put together after a study involving nearly 4,000 adults with what researchers call “subthreshold depression.” Users spent 20-60 minutes on the app per week, and 6 months later, they still reported improved mental health results. It is hoped the app will help those who suffer symptoms that don’t require traditional treatment, but still cause them to function at less than 100%. (One problem: I’m pretty sure that my mild depression is a result of too much screen time!)
❑ An AI app has been launched that claims to be able to help you to “cheat on everything”. Cluely works by tracking a user’s screen in a virtual meeting – for example, a job interview or a sales call – and offering clever responses. Its promotional video shows also shows how the app can be used to lie to a date. If you’re interested, the Cluely app will cost you $20 a month for a subscription. (But can you really trust a company that promises to help you cheat others?)

HAVING A ‘WEE’ RUN:
Who knew your race-day bathroom break could help bake bread? Stay with me, here. At this year’s London Marathon, held last Sunday, the startup Peequal collected urine from female runners at the starting line, using specially designed female port-a-potties. Why just the women’s toilets? Because Peequal was founded to tackle a very real race-day issue: incredibly long lines for ladies. Their speedy toilet design slashes wait time by a whopping 270% — and the bonus? All that collected pee will be turned into…fertilizer. The company says that just 1,000 liters of “marathon pee” could fertilize enough wheat to bake 3,000 loaves of bread. Their tech treats the urine using bacteria, transforming it into plant-friendly nutrients like nitrogen and urea. NPK Recovery founder Hannah Vandenbergh, whose organization was also involved in the project, pointed out that with 53,000 runners each year, that’s a lot of untapped… potential.
(Yup. In fact, now she can say her company is “#1 in sustainability” – literally!)
(I’m guessing the ‘pee fertilizer’ thing won’t printed in big, bold letters on the bread bags?)

HEALTH MYTHBUSTING:
✓ Never apply ice to a burn: Fact. Ice causes constriction of blood vessels and will make a burn deeper, because healing blood flow to the area will be restricted. Instead, immediately immerse the burn in cool water, or apply a cool, wet compress. (
✗ Eating too much sugar will give you diabetes: Myth. Sugar becomes glucose in your bloodstream. In response, your body makes insulin to regulate blood sugar. Type 2 diabetes is a problem with insulin regulation, not sugar intake. (It’ll still wreck your teeth and make you fat, though — but totally worth it, some days!)
✗ Eating carrots improves your vision: Myth. However, they ARE good for your eyes. Carrots are orange because they contain beta-carotene, which your body converts into Vitamin A. That vitamin is important for vision.
✓ You don’t need 8 glasses of water daily: True. There is no scientific evidence to support this. Your requirement depends on a number of factors including body size, climate, and activity level. (And whatever shenanigans you were up to the night before!)
✗ You should rinse the toothpaste from your mouth after brushing your teeth: Myth. That means you’re also spitting out the fluoride that’s protecting you from tooth decay — before it can work. If you feel that you need to rinse, use as little water as possible, and try to just spit out the foam.

DID YOU KNOW?
Believing in Satan and Hell stresses us out. A new study published in PLOS ONE suggests that those who believe in spooky stuff like the devil and witchcraft tend to feel more stressed out and less able to cope with life’s curveballs. Perhaps surprisingly, though, if you’re into crystals, psychic powers, or predicting the future, your stress levels probably aren’t affected at all. The researchers said that traditional supernatural beliefs are linked to a feeling that you’re not in control of your own life. And people who believe in concepts like hell, witchcraft, and devilish forces tend to see the world as controlled by powers beyond their reach. (Now tell me if it’s a coincidence that I feel exactly the same way about my career…)

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Global Love Day”, calling upon all people and nations to come together in peace and love. It’s a chance for us to embrace ourselves and our fellow humanity. (Legal note: Don’t literally embrace anyone without first getting permission!)
• “May Day”, a European festival celebration going back to ancient times to celebrate the beginning of summer. The occasion is observed in more than 90 countries as Labor Day-type holiday, known as “International Workers’ Day”.
• “Lei Day”, celebrated in Hawaii instead of May Day. It is a time to celebrate native Hawaiian culture. One of the most common flowers used in leis is the orchid.
• “Phone in Sick Day”, when people call in sick as a form of protest against longer work hours, less leisure time, and a lower quality of life, and to show their dissatisfaction with the “rat race” of modern life. (Try calling in sick today with eye problems. As in: “I just couldn’t see myself going to work today”!)
• “Couple Appreciation Day”, for those who are in a relationship to do something to show their appreciation for their partner (or partners!).
• “Mother Goose Day”, which actually honors many different writers. The term was first used in the title of the nursery rhyme collection “Mother Goose’s Melody” in about 1765. The name caught on and nursery rhymes have been attributed to ‘Mother Goose’ ever since.
• “School Principals Day”, to honor the educational leaders who set the academic tone by encouraging students to thrive. (How do you remember how to spell ‘Principal’? Just remember that he/she is always your ‘pal’!)
• “Chocolate Parfait Day”. Parfait literally means “perfect” in French! The American style layers parfait cream, ice cream and flavored gelatin in a tall, clear glass topped with whipped cream, fruit and liqueurs.
• “New Homeowner’s Day”. Congratulations, you’ll be debt-free in about 30 years! Got your repair manual yet?
• “Law Day”. This day allows all Americans to reflect on the personal rights and liberties, which are enjoyed and exercised daily.
• “World Password Day”, an annual reminder to promote better password habits and digital security. A few things to consider today:
☞ Change an old password to a long, strong one
☞ Turn on 2-factor authentication for your important accounts
☞ Password protect your wireless router
☞ Don’t store passwords on your computer or phone (Whoops…)
☞ Log off when you’re done with a program or password-protected site
☞ The password “Password” is NOT your friend
