More From the Sheethouse!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:

★ Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” remake is projected to grab the biggest-ever Memorial Day weekend opening, earning an estimated $175 million over the 4-day period. The PG-rated family comedy could beat Tom Cruise in 2 departments, not only more than doubling the debut of “Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning”, but also pacing ahead of the 4-day 2022 opening of “Top Gun: Maverick” ($160 million) for a new record Memorial Day weekend opening. The Final Reckoning took in a franchise-best figure for Tom Cruise‘s long-running series, with a projected 4-day domestic haul of $77 million.

★ Amid rumors of a cast shakeup following “Saturday Night Live” wrapping up its 50th season last week, Kenan Thompson seems to believe they’re true. The longest-tenured SNL member called the ending of Season 50, “bittersweet”, saying: “It feels like there’s maybe, possibly, a lot of change next year.” Thompson added that “people may be making decisions this summer.” Changes are likely to come with a 17-member cast that features 6 veterans who have been on the show for 7 or more seasons: Colin Jost, Michael Che, Mikey Day, Heidi Gardner, Ego Nwodim and, of course, Thompson.
-Deadline
★ Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie “Rust”, is no longer behind bars. She was released from prison Friday, after being sentenced to 18 months in April 2024. Gutierrez-Reed was serving as the weapons supervisor on Rust in 2021, when a prop gun used by star and producer Alec Baldwin discharged a live round, killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza.

★ Years after Jussie Smollett claimed to be the victim of a MAGA hate crime on the streets of Chicago, the whole matter, lawsuits and all, is over — after the ex-“Empire” star wrote a check. Actually, 2 checks. A day after officials for the Windy City announced they had reached a settlement with Smollett, he announced he’s giving $50,000 to one local organization, and an additional $10,000 to another. Smollett said to a reporter: “After repeatedly refusing to pay the City, I was presented with an opportunity to make a charitable donation in exchange for the (civil suit from the city) being dismissed.”
-Deadline
★ “The Handmaid’s Tale” star Elisabeth Moss is clearing up rumors that Taylor Swift had a secret cameo during the show’s final season. Swift’s song ‘Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version)’ opened the episode, which only added to the speculation that the singer-songwriter appeared somewhere in the show. Adding to the clues, Swifties noted that Moss and co-star Bradley Whitford attended Swift’s show in Toronto, where the Hulu series was filmed. But Moss poured cold water on the speculation, saying: “That’s not Taylor. She’s pretty busy. I feel like if she was going to come do our show, we would’ve made sure we saw her face.”

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Joe Jonas – has dropped his new solo album “Music for People Who Believe in Love”. It features the previously released singles ‘Heart By Heart’, ‘What This Could Be’, and ‘Work It Out’, as well as the new tune ‘Honey Blonde’. Lewis Capaldi and Joe’s brother Franklin Jonas both make guest appearances.
• Charli XCX – said that her follow up to the hit album “Brat” might not be as successful. Quote: “I had no clue that people would kind of connect to (Brat) in the way that they did. So yeah, I don’t really feel the pressure, because I feel that you can never really do the same thing twice, and my next record will probably be a flop which I’m down for, to be honest.”
• Lynyrd Skynyrd – 52 years after ‘Free Bird’ was released, the band has finally released an official video for its most iconic track. The video cuts between an older man and his younger self, looking back at a past romance and the motorbike that facilitated it. Finally, he fixes up his bike and hits the open road, just in time for the epic guitar solo. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mr2e7xf5
• Foo Fighters – Their tour rider for a show in Jakarta gives them permission to swear, smoke and drink on stage. They recently announced their first show in the Indonesian capital since 1996 on October 2, and were granted special permissions for the cursing, drinking and smoking, but agreed not to touch on “sensitive topics”.
• Sheryl Crow – May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and she has shared the new single ‘I Know’, to spread awareness. She said she wrote it “In a recent moment when I was really struggling”. After sending it to some friends, their “strong reaction” encouraged her to release it. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2af4z22a
• Alex Williams – is highly-regarded as a country music Outlaw revivalist. But for his next record, he’s making hair metal go country. He has recorded country versions of 10 familiar songs by Cinderella, Ratt, Mötley Crüe, Skid Row, Poison, and other metal legends, including Motörhead, Ozzy Osbourne, and Guns N’ Roses. “Space Brain” drops July 18. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mrx6xhp3
• Corey Kent – is riding high on the charts with his single ‘This Heart’, but he’s also featured on a just-released collab with Texas country legend Pat Green. About the duet ‘Two Hands’, he wrote on Instagram: “This song is about having grit and building something that lasts for the people you love.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/4dmwbzbs
• High Valley – posted on Facebook “I asked ChatGPT to roast us. I’m pretty impressed.” The accompanying readout from the AI service includes this: “Their music is so squeaky clean it makes the Jonas Brothers look like Motley Crüe. I’ve seen more edge on a butter knife. If country music had a Hallmark section, they’d be the soundtrack.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/bdfsvy93

SHOOTING THE BULL

HIT SNOOZE, YOU LOSE:
Yes, hitting that snooze button can be very tempting – especially on a Monday morning. But here’s why you should resist – and also resist sleeping in on your day off, according to experts. Sleeping in when you feel tired can actually leave you feeling groggier. How? Well, your body loves routine—and oversleeping throws off your natural rhythm, leading to what some call a “sleep hangover”. Instead of hitting snooze, try these quick, expert-backed tips to feel more energized: Drink a glass of water when you wake up—hydration can fight off that sluggish, dehydrated feeling. Move your body, even if it’s just a walk or light stretch — exercise boosts energy and mood. Make breakfast something you look forward to — it gives your body the fuel it needs and makes getting up more rewarding. Step outside for some sunlight to help reset your internal clock. And finally, take a mindful moment—meditation or journaling can improve your mental clarity and sleep quality. Those small changes can help you feel more awake now—and sleep better later. Your future self (and your sleep cycle) will thank you.
(Sunlight before breakfast? Bold of you to assume I open the curtains…)

NEW DEVELOPMENTS:
➢ A new type of sustainable aviation fuel works by pulling carbon dioxide from the air and turning it into jet fuel. It may sound like science fiction, but experts believe that the idea of flying on fuel made from air could become a reality. e-SAF (also known as electrofuels, e-kerosene and e-fuels), made with renewable hydrogen and CO₂ captured from the air, are very expensive, but experts say they hold immense promise: they could be genuinely carbon-neutral. Though the market is still in the fledgling stage, the first commercial flights using e-fuels, at least in part, are expected by 2030. (So, by then, we’ll need to find a new reason to hate the rich and famous who take a half-hour flight to dinner!)
➢ Scientists have officially brought genetic engineering to the spider’s web. For the first time, researchers have created a gene-edited spider that spins RED FLUORESCENT silk. Researchers at University of Bayreuth used a species of common house spider. The silk retained its natural properties of being lightweight, incredibly strong, and biodegradable. But the newly-produced web is red, and glows under certain light conditions. The researchers say the goal is to expand the functionality of spider silk, with hopes it could be engineered for new uses in medicine, materials science, or even wearable tech. (As a Spider-Man fan, I’m not saying I want to be bitten by one of those things…but I’m also not saying I DON’T want to be bit by one!)

TICKED ABOUT TIPPING:
It would seem that some of us have reached our ‘tipping point’. That’s the overall take-away from a survey that asked Canadians about unexpected tipping requests. Among the responses in the callout poll by CTVNews…
• A Vancouver resident was prompted to tip while paying the cover charge to enter a nightclub. Not for drinks or coat check – just to walk through the door.
• A Quebec resident reported he scanned his item at a department store and was ready to tap his credit card for payment, but the machine first asked for a tip, and he “hadn’t even talked to an employee.”
• A BC resident was surprised to be asked for a $3 tip after booking a hotel room online – and it was difficult to find the option to “opt out of that ridiculous request”.
• Another BC resident was caught off guard when his local self-serve liquor store prompted him to leave a tip.
• Yet another BC resident was hit with an 18% tip prompt after spending more than $600 on a graduation dress.
A recent survey by H&R Block found that 90% of Canadians believe tips are too high and 82% say they’re now being asked to tip in more places than ever. Almost 1 in 4 said they’ve been asked to tip “in places or situations that felt uncomfortable or unexpected.”
(I was asked to tip my microwave for reheating leftovers. Felt weird, but it did do a good job!)
(On the other hand…some days I’d gladly pay an extra few bucks NOT to have to talk to someone!)

OTHER EPONYMOUS LAWS:
As you no doubt know, Murphy’s Law states: “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” Here are some laws named after other people, all based on observations or rules of thumb that capture some universal truth of human experience…
Brooks’ Law: “Adding manpower to a late project makes it later.”
Celine’s Law: “Honest communication occurs only between equals.”
Dykstra’s Law: “Everybody is somebody else’s weirdo.”
Hanlon’s Razor: “Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.”
Law of the Instrument: “If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.”
Littlewood’s Law: “A person can expect to experience events with odds of one in a million (a ‘miracle’) at the rate of about one per month.”
Napoleon’s LawNever interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.”
Parkinson’s Law: “Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.”
Peter Principle: “In a hierarchy, every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence.”
Ringwald’s Law of Household Geometry: “Any horizontal surface is soon piled up on.”
Segal’s Law: “A man with a watch knows what time it is. A man with 2 watches is never sure.”
Two Pizza Law: “If you can’t feed a team with two pizzas, it’s too large.”

DID YOU KNOW?

Several studies have indicated that dogs very much enjoy when their owner speaks to them in that high-pitched, exaggerated “baby talk” style. Often referred to as “dog directed speech” or “infant directed speech” it has been found to evoke a stronger response in dogs’ brains, compared to normal speech. Measurements of brain activity in dogs suggest they are attuned to the exaggerated intonation and rhythm that humans also use when communicating with infants — and perhaps this is why we instinctively speak to them in this way. (Mine doesn’t care HOW I say it – he just wants to hear the word “treat”!)

BS CHRONOMETER 05.26.25

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Memorial Day”, in the US, honoring men and women who died while serving in the military. It began following the Civil War, when, in 1865, the first national cemeteries were established. Memorial Day is also considered the unofficial start of summer in the US. (And apparently, a fantastic time to take advantage of clearance prices on used cars, mattresses…and fireworks!)
• “Paper Airplane Day”, an unofficial observance honoring the simple aeronautical toy anyone can make. (Just remember: Once you throw a paper airplane, it’s no longer stationary!)
• “Blueberry Cheesecake Day”. Well, okay … if we have to!
• “World Dracula Day”, Bram Stoker’s Gothic horror novel “Dracula” was first published on this date in 1897. According to legend, the character may have been based on Stoker’s horrible boss.
• “Sally Ride Day”. The first American woman in space, Sally Ride, is a role model for young people, particularly for girls and those interested in science and space. At the time of her first flight, Ride, at 32, was also the youngest US astronaut to travel in space.
• “World Lindy Hop Day”, celebrating the dance (aka ‘swing dancing’ or ‘jitterbug’) that originated in Harlem NYC in the 1920s but is still popular today. In fact, there are Lindy Hop dance schools and clubs worldwide.
• “World Redhead Day”, Some “Whack Redhead Facts”:
⇒ Less than 2% of the population has red hair.
⇒ Red hair is thicker than other colors, and harder to dye.
⇒ Redheads are more sensitive to hot and cold, and sometimes to pain. But other studies say they are LESS sensitive to pain. Either way, they need about 20% more anesthesia to be sedated.
⇒ Redheads are more likely to be left-handed.
⇒ Contrary to some reports, red hair is NOT dye-ing out (sorry for the pun!). Although their numbers are decreasing, they are in no danger of extinction.
⇒ Redheaded women have more sex…according to Cosmo.
