Before his passing, director Gordon Green also set up a private screening of the upcoming thriller “Halloween Kills”, which will be released next year.

PLAY AGAIN:
Playing video games can be good for your mental health, according to a new study by Oxford University. The finding comes as video game sales this year have boomed as people are stuck at home because of the pandemic. The study, based on responses from people who played two games, “Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville” and “Animal Crossing: New Horizons”, found the actual amount of time spent playing is a small but significant positive factor in people’s well-being. The researchers determined that the level of enjoyment that players get from a game could be a more important factor for their well-being than mere playing time, and video game play “can be an activity that relates positively to people’s mental health.” They say that regulating video games could withhold those benefits from players. The results could cast doubt on long-held assumptions that gaming causes aggression or addiction, though the authors acknowledge they are only a snapshot.
(Well, a university is definitely the place to do a study on video games…)
(Speaking as someone who has invested years of his life playing video games, I can say without a doubt that they are indeed addictive – and I wouldn’t change a thing!)
(GAMER JOKE: There is no link between aggression and video games…But there is a link between aggression and lag.)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ The “Giant Food” supermarket chain put its foot in its mouth by publishing a tone-deaf Thanksgiving-themed ad in its own magazine. It shows an image of shrimp, fruit and cheese platters — with text proclaiming, “Hosting? Plan a super spread.” The US chain ran the full-page ad to encourage readers to host gatherings, despite the pandemic, as well as share food with each other. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a “superspreader event” is a gathering in which one contagious person infects many others. (On the other hand, they were smart enough not to call it a “Pandemic party”!)
➢ If 2020 had a smell, what would it be? A UK candle company named “Flaming Crap” has its own take on the notion and has packaged it in a multi-layer candle called “The 2020 Scent.” The company’s website says the candle features “four fragrant layers” and it “takes you on a sensual journey through the year”. But what does it smell like? It includes aromas of banana bread, hand sanitizer, DIY projects and budget aftershave, the kind you would imagine ‘Joe Exotic’ from “Tiger King” wearing. Each candle costs about $20. (I think they were closer to the ‘smell of 2020’ when they named their company!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Restrictions brought on by COVID-19 have made connecting with new people infinitely harder in 2020. In a poll, more than six in 10 Americans (63%) believe dating will never be the same in the wake of the pandemic. Of the 2,000 adults surveyed, 31% say virtual dates are the new normal, and say this isn’t going to change anytime soon. Other changes: 30% believe more people will use dating apps to meet new people. Another 30% say goodnight kisses will now have to wait until the second or third date. And 44% predict that everyone will be much more cautious about kissing and, uh, touching moving forward.
