Good Morning, Sheetheads!
BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ (***UPDATE***) Alex Trebek has died more than a year and a half after publicly revealing his stage 4 pancreatic cancer diagnosis. The Sudbury, Ontario-born Trebek was an American pop culture icon and a fixture in homes around the world as the beloved host of “Jeopardy!” for more than 35 years. He was 80. In Oct., Trebek said he was was “hanging in” there after announcing he was undergoing another round of chemotherapy. He said (QUOTE) “We’ll play it by ear and keep chugging along until we either win or lose,” and added that he was “not afraid of dying.”

★ Johnny Depp will no longer appear in the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise after losing his libel suit against a tabloid that called him a “wife beater.” Depp confirmed he was asked to step down following a judge’s ruling that it’s “substantially true” he abused ex-wife Amber Heard. In a statement, he maintained his innocence and said he plans to appeal. Depp portrayed dark wizard ‘Gellert Grindelwald’ in the first two installments. The third film is in production.

★ Matthew Broderick says he almost turned down the lead role in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”. The 1986 movie is one his most iconic roles, but according to him, (QUOTE) “I thought [the script] was great, and I had a teeny hesitation because having just done [the plays] ‘Brighton Beach [Memoirs]’ and ‘Biloxi [Blues],’ I was like, ‘Wow, I’m talking to the audience, just like in these plays”. He went on to explain that as a young actor, you feel that you ‘have to do something different.'” Fortunately for Broderick, friends, family and his agent urged him to take the role because John Hughes was directing.

★ Jason Priestley is set to star in “Fear the Worst”. He’ll also produce the upcoming movie, an adaptation of Linwood Barclay’s novel of the same name. The story details how an ordinary man’s desperate search for his daughter leads him into a dark world of corruption, exploitation, and murder. Priestly currently stars in the Canadian comedy-drama television series “Private Eyes” as a hockey player turned private investigator.

★ Sarah Michelle Gellar and good friend Shannen Doherty chose to de-stress last week by suiting up and plowing into each other, all in good fun of course. Gellar posted a light-hearted clip to Instagram, writing that she hoped to give followers some “alternative programming,” likely implying that we all need a break from constant election coverage. The pair are seen wearing blue inflatable bubbles, going head-to-head, as Gellar knocks Doherty to the ground.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Miley Cyrus — Stevie Nicks is featured in her new song ‘Edge of Midnight’. As its title suggests, the remix blends elements of Nicks’ 1981 hit ‘Edge of Seventeen’ with Cyrus’ August single ‘Midnight Sky’, which also contained elements of the older song. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/y3o2fuc2
• Diplo — The former EDM superstar has purchased a home formerly owned by Kid Rock for $13.2 million. The mansion is in the sought-after Point Dume neighbourhood of Malibu. Rock owned it from 2006-13 before selling it to an LA businessman.
• Van Halen — Eddie Van Halen’s influence was acknowledged during the 2020 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, which aired on Sat. A video tribute, including testimonials from Slash, Metallica’s Kirk Hammett and Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine was featured, with the latter calling him “the Mozart of our generation”.
• Queen + Adam Lambert — Fresh off their release of the “Live Around the World” album, they’ve released a performance video for ‘Somebody to Love’. It was shot during a 2016 concert at the Isle of Wight Festival in the UK. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/y6b8bsj5
• System of a Down — have released their first new music since 2005 to raise awareness of the conflict in Armenia. They’ve dropped the songs ‘Protect the Land’ and ‘Genocidal Humanoidz’ in solidarity with Armenians under fire from Azerbaijani and Turkish forces in the lopsided conflict.
• Michael Bublé and Dolly Parton – have released an animated video for their holiday duet ‘Cuddle Up, Cozy Down Christmas’. It shows them in front of a blazing fire at “Holly Dolly’s Ski Resort” as a snowstorm blows outside. After its release last month, “A Holly Dolly Christmas” hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Holiday Albums chart.
• Brothers Osborne – had two of the best tweets after Joe Biden was announced as the winner of the US presidential race: #1: “Remember in little league when, no matter the result, we had to walk on the field and slap the opposing team’s hand and say ‘good game’? Half were happy, half were sad, then everyone got to eat pizza afterwards. I think we should all eat pizza tonight.” #2: “Who would have thought that two men in their 70’s could maintain an election that long?”
• Thomas Rhett — has surprised fans with a preview of his upcoming single ‘What’s Your Country Song’. The song, to be officially released in Wed., was written by Rhett and his father Rhett Akins, among others. He’ll also perform at the CMAs on Wednesday.
• Billy Ray Cyrus – released a cover of LL Cool J’s ‘Mama Said Knock You Out’ on the new second installment of his “Singin’ Hills Sessions” EPs. In Cyrus’s version, the 1990 rap hit becomes a string-instrument number, with a handclap rhythm and background gang vocals – but still features the defiant opening line: “Don’t call it a comeback.”
NOW YOU CAN COMMUTE – EVEN IF YOU’RE WORKING FROM HOME:
If you’ve been working from home, you might feel like you never leave work these days. Well, the Marriott says they’re here to help. The hotel chain is offering a new “day pass” and other options for members of its Marriott Bonvoy travel program in some cities as a way for them to work remotely – AND get out of the house. Day pass guests get a hotel room from 6am-6pm with Wi-Fi, desk space, a chair and, of course, electrical outlets. They also can enjoy coffee, bottled water and food, and access to on-site business facilities such as printing, fax and scanning equipment, plus other perks like the gym and pool. Some locations are also offering supervised children’s and family activities. The day pass package is being offered at hotels in 9 international cities, and Marriott plans to add more locations.
(Plus, you can get a wake-up call when it’s time to go home!)
(Some people will go to tremendous lengths just so no one sees their house on Zoom!)
(They SAY they have Wi-Fi, but last time I stayed there, the only reception was just inside the front door!)

NOT SO HOT:
The idea that a simple paint could be almost as effective as modern air-conditioning sounds crazy, but if it works, we say, “Take my money, please!” Engineers at Purdue University have unveiled a revolutionary “radiative cooling” white paint that they say can keep surfaces up to 18 degrees Fahrenheit (7.8 degrees Celsius) cooler than their ambient temperature. It works by absorbing almost no solar energy and actually sending heat away from the surfaces it covers. The say that currently available white paint reflects just 80-90% of sunlight and can’t achieve temperatures below its surroundings, but the new reflective white paint reflects 95.5% of sunlight and radiates infrared heat much more effectively. They estimate that the new reflective white paint would be cheaper to produce than commercial white paint, and save homeowners about a dollar a day per floor on air-conditioning.
(Does it come in black?)
(Sure, but then I’d have to spend my whole summer painting…)
(That’ll be the first time I’ve ever put on a coat because it’s too hot!)

TEXAS WATERFALL:
A third-grader from Celeste, Texas has won the kids category at the USA Mullet Championships. 8-year-old Jaxon Crossland is one of hundreds from across the country who submitted photos of their “Camaro crash helmet”, ranging in styles from the “freedom flapper”, “modern mullet” and the Tennessee top hat”. Jaxon’s falls under the “curly” category. His mom Zoie says he has been “ecstatic” since winning the $500 prize. Jaxon’s response? “I can’t give autographs right now, ’cause I don’t know cursive.”
(Don’t worry, kid. Many who sport your hairstyle don’t!)

FEEL-GOOD FODDER:
With the presidential election results in, those of us who have been spending our evenings flipping through the news channels vainly searching for an update — should find that we have a bit of extra time on our hands. And with all the doom and gloom and negativity that we’ve been exposed to lately, why not find a feel-good movie to watch? Here are a few . . .
• “Shazam!”: Zachary Levi won hearts years ago starring in the NBC series “Chuck.” In his latest role, he’s practically perfect as a superhero.
• “Legally Blonde”: Reese Witherspoon was so great in this comedy about a sorority girl who heads off to Harvard Law School that the 2001 film spurred movie sequels, a Broadway musical and a reality show.
• “Moonstruck”: Cher, who won the Oscar for best actress in 1988 for her performance, was a delight starring as a widow who falls for her fiancé’s younger and more passionate brother, played by Nicolas Cage (!).
• “Pitch Perfect”: Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson lead the cast in this charming film set in the world of a cappella singing competitions.
(Name some more feel-good films…)

DID YOU KNOW?
‘Baby Nancy’, the first Black baby doll to have an Afro and other authentic features, was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame on Thursday, along with sidewalk chalk and the wooden block game “Jenga”. The 2020 honorees were recognized for their creativity and popularity over time. They were chosen from a list of 12 contenders, beating out other classics like bingo, My Little Pony and Tamagotchi. The Strong National Museum of Play, in Rochester, New York, heads the Hall of Fame, and has inducted new toys each year since 1988.
