BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
The Writers Guild of America is advising members NOT to work on a new comedy-variety show hosted by the Osbournes because producer FremantleMedia (“American Idol”) has a history of underpaying staff (they ought to advise against working on it because – it’s a comedy-variety show hosted by the Osbournes!) . . . Indie folk/roots/rock/country singer Rufus Wainwright has been commissioned to compose his debut opera, “ Prima Donna “, the story of a fading opera star which will premiere at the 2009 “Manchester International Festival” (thereby furthering his career goal which seems to be – obscurity) . . . 40-year-old ‘James Bond’ actor Daniel Craig has revealed he needed 8 stitches in his face and cosmetic surgery after an accident on the set of “Quantum of Solace” in JUNE that also resulted in a severed fingertip (now he can’t use his Lenova laptop with fingerprint reader security) . . . Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs is doing everything he can to flog his upmarket Ciroc vodka, including going glam as Frank Sinatra in a new series of ads (Frank is no doubt spinning) . . . TV host-turned-producer Ryan Seacrest says he & Paris Hilton are developing a scripted series for her to star in, based on her real-life lavish lifestyle (just one more reason to hate on Ryan) . . . And 82-year-old Hugh Hefner tells “Us Magazine” that one reason he split with 29-year-old GF Holly Madison is – they tried to have a baby earlier this year and it didn’t work out (eww, did you just throw up in your mouth a little bit, too?).

• Rolling Stones – “Hollywood Insider” says Mick Jagger is collaborating with former Eurythmics mastermind Dave Stewart on a new musical project. Just what it is, no one’s saying yet.

TODAY’S MOVIE OPENINGS:

THE HUMAN MUFFLER:
Just when you thought life couldn’t possibly get any more hi-tech, a company called Garment Guard has come up with ‘Subtle Butt Disposable Gas Neutralizers’. Yep, they’re filters for flatulence. The self-adhesive fabric filters are impregnated with activated carbon, which purportedly screen out any … er … unintentional releases. A pack of 5 sells for $9.95, a small pittance for protection at this weekend’s chili cook-off. (Be forewarned … this is NOT a silencer.)

GIVE US A ‘C’!
The National Cheer Safety Foundation is calling for federal regulation of cheerleading in the United States. Nearly 30,000 cheerleaders a year are treated for accidents in emergency wards, and several deaths have been reported. Kimberly Archie, founder of the NCSF, says 14 cheerleaders have died suddenly after heart attacks believed to be attributable to the stresses of routines. (Of course it’s dangerous! Remember that movie “The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom”? No, huh.)

WAYS TO BEAT THE RECESSION:
Not many are using the ‘R’ word yet but it sure seems like one’s on the way. A few tips on how to help your money stay local, either in your community, in your country, or in your pocket …
• Shop at local farms or farmers markets.
• Buy from consignment stores.
• Eat out at independent restaurants, rather than chains.
• Grow your own food.
• Raise a couple of chickens, eat the eggs.
• Buy goods made in your own country.
• Shop at local independent stores, not chains.
• Support local service industries.
• Shop at garage sales.
• In locales that offer it, return used bottles for refund.

WHEN PENGUINS FLY:
Hundreds of penguins that migrated too far north on the coast of Brazil have been flown back to their regular feeding grounds. The 373 young Magellanic penguins, which were among some 1,600 emaciated birds that showed up in locations hundreds of miles north of normal, were rehabilitated by the International Fund for Animal Welfare, then flown 1,500 miles south aboard an air force cargo plane. Experts say changes in currents and wind temperatures likely confused the young penguins and contributed to their wandering too far north. (Plus most were males and wouldn’t ask for directions.)
