BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
TODAY Madonna is set to appear on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” (syndicated/CTV) to defend her controversial adoption of 13-month-old Malawian David Banda (so far, her big promotional machine is losing the spin battle to the boy’s humble 32-year-old birth father, Yohane Banda) . . . TONIGHT preview performances of a Broadway musical version of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” begin at the Hilton Theatre in NYC (“You’re a mean one, Mr Grinch …”) . . . Paul McCartney’s estranged wife Heather Mills is now planning a Princess-Di-style ‘reveal all’ interview in a live TV appearance, most likely on “Larry King Live” (CNN) or UK TV’s “Tonight With Trevor McDonald” (Mac, just give her some money and make her go away) . . . MTV personality & Nick Lachey squeeze Vanessa Minillo has landed her first acting gig, playing the love interest to the ‘Human Torch’ in the upcoming “Fantastic Four” sequel (word is he’s a hunka hunka burning love) . . . Have you noticed? Only about 10% of TV shows currently have traditional theme songs, a phenomenon industry observers say is an attempt to prevent viewers from hitting their remotes to see what else might be on . . . A new Halloween poll asking film fans which celebrity they’d like to see killed off in a horror movie is unsurprisingly topped by Paris Hilton (39%), beating out slightly less loathed Lindsay Lohan (18%) . . . And word has it the first official pics of Britney Spears’ & Kevin Federline’s 2nd spawn are scheduled for release any day now, not so coincidentally just in time for K-Fed’s OCTOBER 31st CD launch (word has it the kid’s name – Sutton Pierce or Jayden James? – and gender – boy or girl? – are purposely being kept fuzzy in an attempt to generate more buzz).
BS MUSIC NOTES:

• JoJo – TODAY the “Too Little Too Late” singer appears on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show” (syndicated/CityTV).

• Martina McBride – TONIGHT she sings “Rose Garden” and “This One’s for the Girls” on “Dancing With the Stars” (ABC).

BS BUZZWORDS:
New terms leaking into the lingo …
• ‘Arm Restle’ – On an airplane, the ongoing battle with your seatmate over the middle armrest.
• ‘Manaissance’ – The revival and rebirth of masculine culture. Evidence this is taking place: Red Wing shoes, mustaches, whisky, and iron belt buckles emblazoned with horses.
• ‘Sip & Click’ – Shopping online while imbibing, also known as ‘clicking under the influence’. The result is online purchases you can’t remember making.
• ‘Wet Signature’ – An original signature. You know, the old-fashioned kind written in ink on a real paper document, not one that’s been faxed, photocopied or scribbled electronically with a stylus.
WHO DA MAN?
A new online magazine poll ranks the ‘Best Representatives of the Male Gender’ …
5. Fashion designer Tom Ford.
4. Former cyclist Lance Armstrong.
3. British entrepreneur Richard Branson.

GAY ANIMAL SHOW:
In Norway, the Oslo Natural History Museum has opened the first exhibition in the world to touch on a subject that has been taboo in the past – homosexuality in the animal kingdom. The show, entitled “Against Nature?”, includes photos of same-gender relations between giraffes, apes, flamingos and whales among many others. Scientists claim homosexuality has been observed among 1,500 species, and that in 500 of those it is well documented. The curators of the exhibition are hoping to disprove the argument that homosexual behavior is a so-called ‘crime against nature’. It’s estimated that as many as 1 in 10 pairs of penguins may be same-sex, for instance, and the entire species of bonobo chimpanzees is thought to be bi. (Certainly our dog Killer is an equal-opportunity leg-humper.)

ARE YOU HOT OR NOT?
A study commissioned by Domino’s Pizza has found that millions of British men eat spicy food just to … impress their friends and dates. University of Hertfordshire psychologist Richard Wiseman says the behavior likely has its roots in our evolutionary past when males who exhibited the greatest ability to withstand pain stood a better chance of attracting more females. He says it’s unclear if the ploy actually works in modern society. (Is that the new hotness … a guy who can inhale a jalapeno?)

PURPLE PIZZA EATER:
Oregon State University researchers are fine-tuning a purple tomato, a new blend of colors and nutrients. The skin is said to be as dark as an eggplant, but it doesn’t just look cool … it could be better for you. The novel pigment contains the same phyto-chemical found in blueberries that is thought to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. So far, perfecting the purple tomato has taken 6 years. Researchers think it could hit salad plates in about 2 years. (This is nothing new … Heinz Ketchup released its ‘Purple EZ Squirt’ 5 years ago.)

THE VIRTUAL POST-IT NOTE:
Researchers at Scotland’s Glasgow University & the National University of Ireland are working together to develop a method of attaching text messages, pictures and even video footage to a physical location. The idea is to use GPS and cellphone technology to ‘post’ a message that can be ‘picked up’ by other cellphones as they pass through the same area. Possible uses for the technology: leaving menu specials in the air outside restaurants; having tourist tips attached to popular landmarks; or maybe posting pics of your night out for friends to pick up on their way to work. Researchers say the technology offers the possibility of a virtual world superimposed on top of the real world. (Yeah, this is what we need … another reason for people to get out their phones.)

STOP SINGING IN THE SHOWER:
Australians have been asked to stop singing in the shower in an attempt to save electricity and water. Power supplier Energy Australia says exercising the vocal cords adds an average of 9.08 minutes to a shower. And singing, daydreaming, shaving, and other ‘nonessential activities’ in the shower are adding to the average family’s power bills and contributing to global warming. An energy efficiency expert notes that 1 minute of showering uses the same electricity required to run a TV for 4 hours. It’s estimated that if the average family cut daily shower time by just 2 minutes, it would save over $100 a year. (Conserve energy … shower with a friend!)

TOO STUPID FOR US TO MAKE UP:
• In the Netherlands, politician Anne-Marie Jorritsma is calling for ‘extra benefits’ for Dutch soldiers serving on peacekeeping missions in Afghanistan and Bosnia. What she’s specifically recommending is … government-provided prostitutes. Quote: “The army must think about how their soldiers can let off some steam.”
• In China, a 23-year-old woman from Chongqing is seeking plastic surgery to make her face … less attractive. Why? Her boyfriend of 6 years recently left her, saying her too-beautiful face continually attracts the attention of other men. So far, doctors are refusing to co-operate.
• In the Czech Republic, voters in the town of Havirov have re-elected popular deputy mayor Martin Balsan … who was killed a month ago. The odd voting pattern is thought to be a show of respect. Not to mention an excellent cost-cutting move.
• In Britain, PETA has found another excuse to get naked in a new campaign in which they dress nude women like mermaids and put them outside supermarkets to argue that fish are … ‘complex and intelligent individuals’.
BS AMAZING FACT:
Even the best lip readers can only pick up about 60% of spoken words. The average person can detect only about 10% of the words spoken by watching the lips.
AND WE QUOTE:
“She relied heavily on drugs and drinks to give her confidence in the bedroom and was more often than not too wasted to even perform.”
