BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ HBO’s “House of the Dragon” season finale leaked online Friday ahead of its Sunday night release. In a statement, HBO said the finale was posted to illegal torrent sites, and “appears to have originated from a distribution partner in the EMEA region,” referencing Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The network noted that it is “aggressively monitoring and pulling these copies from the internet.” HBO ended its statement by saying: “We’re disappointed that this unlawful action has disrupted the viewing experience for loyal fans of the show, who will get to see a pristine version of the episode when it premieres Sunday…exclusively in 4K”.

★ He sure knows how to “Rock” the box office. Dwayne Johnson’s “Black Adam” looks to have claimed the top spot on domestic movie charts, ahead of fellow new release “Ticket to Paradise.” Black Adam landed a $26.8 million opening day, including $7.6 million in Thursday previews. The DC Comics adaptation debuted in 4,402 North American theaters. An opening weekend gross of $62.2 million was projected for the superhero flick, which would mark the first wide release to debut above $50 million since Disney’s “Thor: Love and Thunder” bowed to $144 million in July. Second-place “Ticket to Paradise” was projected to nab a $16 million opening weekend.

★ Sacheen Littlefeather – the Native American activist renowned for declining Marlon Brando’s Oscar for “The Godfather”, and who died earlier this month – was not in fact Native American, her sisters claim. In a column in the San Francisco Chronicle by Jacqueline Keeler – an Indigenous writer who has been investigating those she suspects of falsely claiming Native identity, Littlefeather’s biological siblings Rosalind Cruz and Trudy Orlandi said that the actress and Native American civil rights icon falsified her Apache and Yaqui heritage. According to Orlandi, their father – who Littlefeather claimed was a member of the White Mountain Apache and Yaqui tribes – was born in Oxnard, California, to Mexican immigrants. Littlefeather was born Maria Louise Cruz in 1946.

★ Ellen DeGeneres is back with a new short docu-style comedy series. “About Time For Yourself… with Ellen” will be shared weekly on the retired talk show host’s YouTube channel, and the first episode went out on Saturday. In a clip, DeGeneres says: “You know, lately I’ve been taking some time just for myself, away from the cameras. And I’ve been having such a great time, I thought I would share some of what I’ve been doing with you. And so I yelled, ‘Portia, get the camera’…Great job, so far.” The 8-episode series finds the comedian learning new skills at home, like crocheting, bird watching, making cards, and more.

BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Taylor Swift – Her new “Midnights” album is off to a record-breaking start. It sold more than 8000,000 copies in the US on its first day of release Friday across all formats. First day sales alone gave it the largest sales week for any album since 2017, and made it the the top-selling album of 2022. It also broke Spotify’s all time record for most-streamed album in one day.
• Kendrick Lamar – “Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City” turned 10 last week, and it has remained on the Billboard 200 albums chart since its release, a total of 520 weeks. The album peaked at #2 on Nov. 10, 2012.
• Dave Grohl – His classic drum intro on the Queens of the Stone Age tune ‘Song for the Dead’ has become an online sensation. Drummers are taking to TikTok to show off their versions of Grohl’s handiwork. The Foos’ drummer was behind the kit on QOTSA’s 2002 album “Songs for the Deaf”. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/yc6s346e
• U2 — Bono takes “full responsibility” for U2’s iTunes controversy, when the band’s 2014 “Songs of Innocence” album was automatically uploaded to users and, at first, there was no way to delete it. In his upcoming memoir “Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story”, Bono says he soon realized “we’d bumped into a serious discussion about the access of big tech to our lives.”
• The Beatles — have unveiled a previously unknown demo of ‘Yellow Submarine’ sung by John Lennon, ahead of the expanded reissue of “Revolver”, out Oct. 28. Lennon sings it as a melancholy piece about the town in which he was born, where “no one cared, no one cared.” Ringo Starr was featured on lead vocals on the version which became famous. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/mr2rmvbt
• Kelsea Ballerini, Carly Pearce and Kelly Clarkson — will team up for a CMA Awards performance of their new collaboration ‘You’re Drunk, Go Home’. Ballerini is up for Single of the Year and Pearce has 5 nominations for the 2022 CMA Awards, set for Nov. 9 on ABC.
• Zac Brown Band — canceled their Friday show in Vancouver after some members of the group’s entourage were denied entry into Canada. People says that some crew members had old legal charges “that had been expunged years ago.” In a statement, the group said while they would have liked to go forward, their commitment to their team forced them to make the decision to cancel.
• Tanya Tucker – Friday, she released the single ‘Ready As I’ll Never Be’,” her first original music since 2019’s Grammy-winning album, “While I’m Livin’.” The song, written by Tucker and Brandi Carlile, serves as the end-title of the new documentary “The Return of Tanya Tucker – Featuring Brandi Carlile”, out Nov. 4.

SHOOTING THE BULL

SMILE AWHILE:
It might not come as a surprise to hear this, but a third of us smile less during the colder months, according to a study. A OnePoll survey also found 75% of people feel their mood is affected by the shorter and colder days of autumn and winter, and 61% are in dire need of a boost of positivity right now. But the results of the poll of 2,000 Brits also highlights how important smiling can be. Smiling is as infectious as laughter, say the experts, with the average smile passing on to 3 more people. Three-quarters of those surveyed agreed that a smile from someone brightens their day, and 28% said it’s better than receiving a gift. 36% said it made them want to do something nice for someone else. So why is smiling so positive? The act of smiling makes your brain release tiny molecules called neuropeptides to fight off stress. It also stimulates neurotransmitters like dopamine, endorphins and serotonin. Endorphins have pain relieving power and the serotonin acts as an antidepressant.
(It’s hard to smile during the colder months. Because of the temperature – and because of the January credit card bills!)
(Fun fact: You can’t breathe correctly while smiling. Just kidding, but I just made you smile!)

NET(FLIX) PROFIT:
With the news that Netflix will officially begin cracking down on account sharing early next year, a tech analyst says the streamer could someday ask customers to scan their fingerprint or use facial recognition in order to use its service. Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, said: “We may see one of the big streaming providers saying ‘we want some biometric proof that you’re there’.” While he doesn’t foresee your smart TV someday featuring a fingerprint sensor, “it could well be that if you want to watch something on a mobile phone, or even if you’re sitting at home, you will get pinged… ‘I want your fingerprint or I want a faceprint to prove that it’s you’.” On Oct.18, Netflix said it will go ahead with plans to “monetize account sharing”. That means primary account holders can create sub-accounts for “extra members” outside their household, at a rate of $4 per month.
(…just in case you were looking for a good reason to contact your ex…!)
(Does the price for a sub-account go up every year, too?)

NEW GOOD NEWS:
➢ More than 1,000 teddy bears left in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II will be donated to a children’s charity. The teddy bears – some in the image of Paddington Bear – were left outside the royal residences in London and Windsor, and other official tribute areas. Buckingham Palace says they will be professionally cleaned and donated to Barnardo’s, a British children’s charity that provides support services for vulnerable children and young adults. Queen Elizabeth II served as the charity’s patron from 1983-2016. Queen Consort Camilla became the Barnardo’s patron in 2016.
➢ Vaccines to fight cancer could be widely available before 2030, according to the husband and wife team behind one of the most successful Covid-19 jabs. Lessons learned during the pandemic will accelerate cancer treatments based on mRNA technology, say professors Ugur Sahin and Ozlem Tureci. The couple co-founded BioNTech in Germany, in 2008, to work mainly on cancer. When the pandemic hit, they changed focus to create a vaccine, working with pharmaceutical giant Pfizer. The mRNA Covid vaccine works by ferrying genetic instructions for essentially harmless spike proteins on the Covid virus into the body, where the immune system’s antibodies learn what to search for and attack. The same approach can be taken to prime the immune system to seek out and destroy cancer cells, according to Tureci.

DID YOU KNOW?
Researchers have found that songbirds help reduce anxiety and feelings of paranoia among people. In a study of 295 participants, a team from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Germany examined the impact of hearing birds versus various traffic sounds. Although birdsong did not positively impact levels of depression, it did ease the severity of other mental health issues. Conversely, traffic noise was shown to worsen depression.
