You Really Know Your Sheet!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Matthew Perry’s addiction struggles became so severe that he “nearly died” a few years ago when his colon burst from opioid overuse. The “Friends” star, loved for his portrayal of ‘Chandler Bing’, has written a memoir, “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing” (available Nov. 1), detailing his journey — one filled with incredible highs and shattering lows. He said at the time of his health scare that he suffered a “gastrointestinal perforation,” but now admits that he actually spent 2 weeks in a coma and 5 months in hospital — and had to use a colostomy bag for 9 months. In an interview for the current issue of People, he said doctors told his family he had just a 2% chance of living. When first cast on Friends at age 24, his alcohol addiction was just starting to surface, but by the time he was 34, he said he “was really entrenched in a lot of trouble.” At one point, Perry was taking 55 Vicodin a day and was down to 128 pounds. Perry says his castmates “were understanding, and they were patient,” as he sought treatment. He has been to rehab 15 times over the years, and says he is “pretty healthy now.”

★ Kanye West is reportedly being sued for $250 million by George Floyd’s family. Citing “harassment, misappropriation, defamation, and infliction of emotional distress,” the Floyd family and their reps shared a release stating the lawsuit is forthcoming. The suit is in response to false claims Ye made over Floyd’s murder during a recent appearance on the “Drink Champs” podcast. The suit will target West, as and his “business partners” and “associates,” arguing that Ye’s comments, in which he said Floyd died of a fentanyl-induced drug overdose, had done irreparable harm to Floyd’s surviving family.

★ A storm is coming back to movie theaters. It’s been reported that directors are being interviewed to helm a sequel to the 1996 blockbuster disaster movie “Twister”. The film, titled “Twisters”, already has a script from “The Revenant” screenwriter Mark L. Smith, with producer Steven Spielberg looking to fast-track things. While Universal searches for a director, names being floated include Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vaserhelyi, who made the Oscar-winning documentary “Free Solo”, as well as “Prey” director Dan Trachtenberg and “Bumblebee” director Travis Knight. The original was directed by Jan De Bont, and starred Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Cary Elwes. Sources say the hope is Hunt will return for the sequel.

★ Faced with Trevor Noah’s imminent departure from “The Daily Show,” Comedy Central is reportedly considering a rotation of hosts to fill his seat. Noah’s last show will be Dec. 8, and no successor has been named. With ratings down, Variety reports that Comedy Central plans to relaunch a “reinvention” of the show beginning Jan. 17, with sources naming contributors Roy Wood Jr. or Jordan Klepper as the most likely replacements. Other featured performers, Desi Lydic and Ronny Chieng, could also be tapped.

SHOOTING THE BULL

SHEDDING NEW LIGHT ON BLACK CATS:
Don’t bother worrying if a black cat crosses your path – chances are, it’ll bring you GOOD luck…at least according to cat lovers. In a new survey of 2,000 American cat owners, only 21% believe that black cats bring bad luck, while nearly twice as many (41%) associate them with good fortune. At least one black cat stereotype does hold true, though: which is that black cats love to talk. Half of black cat caretakers describe theirs as “extremely vocal” (48%), compared to only one third (36%) of other cat owners. And people with black cats consider them just as “affectionate” (63%) as the average cat. The OnePoll survey in advance of National Black Cat Day, Oct. 27, also found that, perhaps unsurprisingly, those with a black cat are more likely than other cat owners to list Halloween as a favorite holiday (25% vs 21%) – although Christmas Thanksgiving still took first and second place.
(Probably because their cat told them to say that!)
(I guess they didn’t ask this question, but speaking from experience, black cats are also 85% more likely to be tripped on during a human’s trip to the bathroom in the middle of the night!)

NOW YA KNOW – FOOD EDITION:
✗ For years we’ve been told to keep potatoes in a cool, dark place – but not the fridge because of concerns over acrylamide, which has been linked to cancer. It was thought that storing raw potatoes in the fridge can lead to the formation of additional sugars which can then convert into acrylamide when they are cooked. But the UK’s Food Standard Agency’s updated guidance says this isn’t the case, according to the results of a new study – and storing your potatoes in the fridge could dramatically reduce food waste. (Except for the fact that you’ll have to remove half of the other stuff in your fridge to make room…)
✗ The great debate about properly storing chocolate has finally been settled. The optimum temperature for keeping chocolate at its best is 18ºC (65ºF), according to food scientists at Galaxy Chocolate, meaning unless you have an exceptionally hot household, a cupboard will do just fine. Despite this, over three quarters of us have been getting this wrong, by popping it into the fridge. The chocolate brand surveyed consumers about their chocolate eating and storing habits and compared the findings to its own research. The scientists say that the best time to eat chocolate is 9-11am, and they advise against chewing chocolate, because “by letting it melt you’re allowing cocoa butter to coat your mouth, allowing you to experience all flavors”. On the other hand, 74% of consumers admit to wolfing down their chocolate, the experts be darned! (Who exactly are these people who claim to have leftover chocolate?)

LATEST BUZZ ON MOSQUITOS:
If you’re anywhere near as attractive as I am, you’ll know what these scientists are talking about. And by ‘attractive’, I mean ‘attractive to mosquitos.’ A new study says that some people really are “mosquito magnets” — and it probably has to do with the way they smell. Researchers at Rockefeller University found that people who are most attractive to mosquitoes produce a lot of certain chemicals on their skin that are tied to smell. And bad news if you’re one of them: The bloodsuckers stay loyal to their favorites over time. In a study, 64 volunteers wore nylon stockings around their forearms to pick up their skin smells. The stockings were put in separate traps, then dozens of mosquitos were released. The researchers found that mosquitos consistently swarmed to the most attractive subjects, and over time it was determined the biggest mosquito magnet was around 100 times more attractive to mosquitoes than the least attractive person (to mosquitos). It was found that “mosquito magnets” had high levels of certain acids on their skin. More bad news: You can’t get rid of these acids without damaging your skin.
(That’s why – whenever I’m outside in the summer, I try to mask my natural aroma with copious amounts of beer and campfire!)
(Trust me – the way you smell has a lot to do with how attractive you are to other creatures as well!)

TOP 5 SPOOKTACULAR HALLOWEEN COSTUME IDEAS, ACCORDING TO EXPERTS:
(A list compiled by visiting 10 of the leading pop culture websites to see which Halloween costumes are sure to impress this year…)
1. “House of the Dragon”:  “Games of Thrones” definitely inspired thousands of ‘Daenerys’ and ‘Jon Snow’ knock-offs, and now the spin-off is giving fans a chance to get creative again. (I had a dragon costume before they were cool!)
2. “Stranger Things”:  Whether it’s ‘Max’, ‘Eddie’, or the demon ‘Vecna’, dressing up as one of the characters from Netflix’s mega-hit won’t disappoint. 80s fashion paired with terrifying supernatural forces — what’s not to love? (I’ve pretty much been dressing like ‘Eddie Munson’ SINCE the 80s!)
3. “Bridgerton”:  Everyone loves a good period piece. Dress up in a dramatic ball gown to channel the lovable and powerful heroine, ‘Kate Sharma’.
4. Beyoncé ’s ‘Renaissance’:  For modern-day cultural relevance, it doesn’t get much better than Bey. While this costume is on the high-maintenance side, if you pull it off, it’ll be one for the ages. (Anyone got a horse I can borrow?)
5. Barbie & Ken:  They’ve always ranked high as popular Halloween costumes, but this year you can take it to a new level after seeing the trailer for the 2023 “Barbie” movie. (This’ll be my 3rd year in a row dressing up as Margot Robbie…but the first time it was for Halloween!)

DID YOU KNOW?
An unopened first-generation iPhone has sold at auction in LA for a whopping $39,339.60. The original 8GB iPhone launched in 2007, featured a 3.5-inch screen, and sold for $499. The classic phone attracted nearly 30 bids, with the winner offering enough cash to buy a whopping 39 new iPhone 14 Pros. Without taking inflation into account, the auction sale of the factory sealed OG iPhone represents an increase of more than 75 times its original price.

TODAY’S BS REASON TO PARTY . . .
• “Brandied Fruit Day”, a day to celebrate booze with a pit.
• “International Day of the Air Traffic Controller”, recognizing the attentive people who keep flight passengers safe by acting as an eye in the sky. (It’s considered one of the most stressful jobs, but it’s the pilot who gets the applause when the plane lands safely!)
• “Suspenders Day”. If you prefer suspenders instead of a belt (how snappy!), this would be your day to celebrate. (We think the inventor of suspenders deserves the “No belt” prize!)
• “Chicken and Waffles Day”, only celebrated since 2021, but definitely worth celebrating! Chicken and waffles generally consist of a waffle that is served with fried chicken and covered with butter and syrup. Variations date as far back as the 17th century.
• “Get to Know Your Customer Day”, a reminder about how important good customer service is for any business. (Observed the third Thursday in January, April, July, and October…and if you don’t know your customers after all that, you never will!)
• “Conflict Resolution Day”, an annual global event promoting the concept of peaceful conflict resolution. (I think we need to observe this several times a year, too!)
• “World Osteoporosis Day”, focusing awareness on a major cause of bone fractures in older persons. Osteoporosis is a disease in which the density and quality of bone is reduced, increasing the risk of fracture.
• “International Chefs Day”, Since 2004, committed to celebrate the profession, and to remember that it is also a chef’s duty to pass on knowledge and culinary skills to the next generation. LINK: https://worldchefs.org/internationalchefsday/
