★ Gerard Butler was hospitalized after an incident where he says he got run off the road while on his motorcycle. Reports say he was riding in L.A. when he was cut off by a car, causing him to crash. Lucky for Butler, he’s not badly hurt. His climate change disaster flick, “Geostorm,” opens on Friday, and he will be well enough to promote it.
(Wouldn’t it have been ironic if had been hit by a Geo Storm?)

★ Dame Helen Mirren will be honoured at the 45th annual Chaplin Award Gala in recognition of her incredible career which has spanned six decades. The 72-year-old actress follows in a long line of legends who have been recipients of the accolade, with previous winners including Alfred Hitchcock, Laurence Olivier, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks and last year’s honouree Robert De Niro.

★ Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas are engaged. Because it’s 2017, the couple made the announcement in matching Instagram posts. They each posted an image of Turner, a star of ‘Game of Thrones’, with her hand on top of Jonas’, showing off the stunning engagement ring against their black clothes. The two have been reportedly dating since November, and they made it ‘Instagram official’ in January.

★ Bryan Cranston says he really did learn how to cook crystal meth while working on ‘Breaking Bad’. Cranston, who played high school teacher-turned-drug lord Walter White in the show, said on the Graham Norton Show that he was so committed to his role that he studied how to make the drug in real life. According to him, the process is “very interesting, intricate and dangerous.”

★ Rose McGowan claims she was ”blacklisted” by Hollywood after she was allegedly raped by Harvey Weinstein. McGowan also claims she was told by a criminal lawyer that she would not win a case against the powerful producer and was discouraged not to take the matter further.

★ Jason Momoa says that in the upcoming movie ‘Justice League’, ‘Aquaman’ is not yet King. According to Momoa, his character “is not even really Aquaman yet. He’s not the King of the Seven Seas”. He says we can expect the fully developed character to really show up in the ‘Aquaman’ solo film. ‘Justice League’ opens on November 17, and the solo ‘Aquaman’ movie is scheduled to drop in December, 2018.

• Ed Sheeran — was involved in a cycling accident. He Instagrammed a picture of himself with one arm in a cast and the other in a sling, and wrote: “I’ve had a bit of a bicycle accident and I’m currently waiting on some medical advice, which may affect some of my upcoming shows. Please stay tuned for further news”.
• Adele – will pay tribute to the late George Michael with a version of his hit ‘Fastlove’ in the upcoming documentary ‘Freedom’.
• Niall Horan – misses the ”comfort blanket” of being in a band with One Direction. According to him, ”With 1D, the screaming didn’t stop. We’d all run around and there was always some explosion going off or prop coming on. Now, I just stand there thanking God for my guitar. When I put that down, I haven’t a clue what to do with my hands.”
• Pink – doesn’t think naked selfies are ”empowering”. She says that while she ”respects” other people’s decisions, she doesn’t think posing nude in your bathroom and posting it online teaches anyone to take you seriously.
• Sam Smith – admits he didn’t ”respect” himself last year and wrote his new album ‘The Thrill Of It All’ about his personal journey since. Now, he says he is ”really happy” in his relationship with actor Brandon Flynn.
• Kelly Clarkson – thinks there is a lot of pressure on women in the music industry. She says there is much more pressure for women than for men to look ”aesthetically” good.
• Nicki Minaj – takes credit for “reintroducing the female rapper to pop culture.” She says her combination of music and commercial acumen helped revitalize hip-hop for women.
• Linkin Park – Bassist Dave “Phoenix” Farrell has posted a photo of the band back together in a room and practicing for the first time since vocalist Chester Bennington was found dead in his California home on July 20. Presumably, they were rehearsing for the Chester Bennington tribute show October 27 in Los Angeles.
• Tom Petty – Keyboardist Benmont Tench is going ahead with a solo show in Florida which was scheduled before Petty’s death. On social media, he wrote that, “You don’t stop playing music on any account, for any reason, and especially when faced with such enormous loss.” He also has 2 NYC shows scheduled in November.
• Melissa Etheridge – was arrested for drug possession on her tour bus in August. It’s just been reported that her vehicle was stopped by U.S. Customs in North Dakota on August 17. A dog unit detected possible drugs and border agents found marijuana oil. Etheridge claimed she uses the oil to manage pain from cancer, and noted it is legal in California where she lives.
• Kelsea Ballerini – she and her fiancé Morgan Evans have instituted a ‘two-week rule’ in their relationship. She says that means they try to never go without seeing each other for more than 2 weeks.
• Dolly Parton – Her first children’s album, ‘I Believe In You’, hit stores on Friday. Money from sales of the album will go her non-profit organization ‘Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library’.

• “The Midwife” (Not Rated, Drama): Bittersweet drama about the unlikely friendship that develops between Claire, a talented but tightly wound midwife, and Béatrice, the estranged, free-spirited mistress of Claire’s late father. Though polar opposites in almost every way, the two come to rely on each other as they cope with the unusual circumstance that brought them together. NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
•The Petit Jardin restaurant in south France has banned cellphones. The owner, Hean-Noël Fluery, put the rule in place to make the restaurant atmosphere more friendly and enjoyable. If any of his employees see customers breaking the rule, they use an interesting form of punishment. The restaurant uses a “football-style card system” and servers “blow a whistle and show a yellow card to anyone caught using their phone.” If that customer is caught using their cell a second time, they get a red card and are asked to leave the eatery. The owner says most people who get a yellow card put away their phone for the rest of their meal. The restaurant owner has also banned ketchup and Coco-Cola in favor of local items.
(I was OK with doing without my phone for the length of a meal. But ketchup? Somewhere the madness must stop.)

• Police say a man pulled over in Des Moines, Iowa told state troopers that he wanted to be chased because it was on his bucket list. The man refused to stop when a trooper tried to pull him over for a traffic violation. A 10-15 minute chase ended with a police ‘PIT’ maneuver after which Frederick Jones was apprehended peacefully.
(As the car was skidding into the ditch, I’m sure responding officers heard a faint “YEEE-HAAAAAW!!!!”)

This test developed by Princeton University, claims it only takes three questions to tell if you’re a genius. Good luck!
1. A bat and a ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?
2. If it takes 5 machines 5 minutes to make 5 widgets, how long would it take 100 machines to make 100 widgets?
3. In a lake, there is a patch of lily pads. Every day, the patch doubles in size. If it takes 48 days for the patch to cover the entire lake, how long would it take for the patch to cover half of the lake?
ANSWERS:
1. $0.05. Many guess 10 cents. If that were the case, the bat would cost $1.20—not $1.10. Purchasing a 5 cent ball and a bat priced at $1.05 (which is $1 more expensive than 5 cents) would total $1.10.
2. 5 minutes. Since the question reveals that it would take 5 minutes for 1 widget machine to make 1 widget, you can determine that it would take 5 minutes for 100 widget machines to make 100 widgets.
3. 47 days. Your gut might tell you it would take 24 days. But remember: Since the area of the lake covered in lily pads doubles every day, a patch that covers half the lake would fully cover it in just one day. Subtract one day from 48 days, and what do you get? 47 days.
