★ Just because Daniel Craig played ‘James Bond’, doesn’t make him an expert. He recently joined his “Queer” costar Drew Starkey for a Variety interview testing how well the actors know one another. And wouldn’t you know it? The duo was asked how many James Bond films Craig starred in. Craig said in response: “Are you asking me that? … I’m gonna get it wrong.” He then deferred to Starkey, who already had an answer prepared on his whiteboard: “Too many.” Craig agreed, as both broke into laughter, but he eventually got the answer (5) right by thinking his way through the titles. Next Craig was asked an even more complicated question: “If you were to pass the James Bond torch, who would you love to see play him?” With a laugh, Craig replied, “I don’t care.”

★ There’s no place like home for Judy Garland’s slippers. But the iconic ruby red sparkly kitten heels worn by the late actress in 1939’s “Wizard of Oz” are no longer at the late actress’ museum in Grand Rapids MN. After being stolen from the tourist destination in 2005, and later recovered by the FBI in 2018, they are being auctioned off, bidding at $1.16 million, at last check. The Judy Garland Museum is attempting to bid for the heels before the auction, run by the slippers’ owner Michael Shaw and Heritage Auctions, ends next month. The identity of the current bidder is unknown. The FBI values the slippers at $3.5 million. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/447sdmfc

★ Australian breaker “Raygun” has announced she will retire from competition, citing the viral response to her performance at the Paris Olympics. Rachael Gunn – who is known as B-girl Raygun – failed to get on the scoreboard in all 3 of her competition rounds in August, with a routine that included unorthodox moves, such as the sprinkler and a kangaroo hop. The 37-year-old university lecturer’s moves catapulted her to global attention and ridicule, spawned conspiracy theories about her qualification, and reignited criticism of breaking’s inclusion in the Olympics. In an interview, she said she initially planned to keep competing, but the saga was so “upsetting” that she changed her mind.

★ “The Office” we know and love could have looked very different. Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, who played ‘Pam’ and ‘Angela’, talked to the show’s casting director Allison Jones in the Nov. 6 episode of their “Office Ladies” podcast. Jones revealed that NBC originally wanted to go for some big names when casting ‘Michael Scott’, suggesting Philip Seymour Hoffman and Paul Giamatti”. She said she that she thought neither actor would be interested in the show, because at the time, “Comedy was the bottom of the barrel.” But creator Greg Daniels wanted the show to mirror the British version, using actors who resembled actual office workers, which helped Steve Carell to eventually land the role.

GOING GREEN:
You’ve heard of “retail therapy”, but have you ever considered that the clothing you buy while shopping could affect your wellbeing? It does, according to Michelle Lewis, a color psychology expert and the founder of The Color Cure. So, if you plan to hits the shops (or Amazon, or wherever else you buy your drip these days…), you should be on the hunt for green items. Why? Lewis calls green the “psychological primary color that balances the other three: red, yellow and blue.” Incorporating green into your wardrobe helps with your “equilibrium”. It can calm you if you’re stressed, and give you a lift if you’re down. It also tends to be soothing, thereby making the wearer feel more relaxed and less anxious.
In addition, keep these tips in mind:
• Wearing the color yellow can make you happier.
• Wearing pink can make you feel comfortable.
• Wearing blue can help bring down your heart rate and blood pressure.
(I’d imagine wearing green helps with the blood pressure too, if it makes you feel more relaxed and less anxious!)
(Does wearing shirts with green armpits help? Asking for a teammate!)

NEWS OF THE WEIRD:
➢ A new snack served on the streets of Chengdu, China has been getting lots of attention, thanks to its odd appearance; it looks like a clump of black human hair. ‘Fa Cai’ or ‘Fat Choy’ is a type of dried cynobacterium that has long been a part of Chinese cuisine. It grows in dry and barren desert areas, and is processed by air-drying after harvesting. Because of its appearance, it is commonly known as the “hair vegetable”. Fa Cai is usually served as black vermicelli in broths and soups, but the dark treat recently went viral as a new street snack – that makes the consumer look as though they are eating human hair. (I saw the video. I think it has taken away my ‘Choi’ of eating, forever!) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/bd5x4xfs
➢ A gastroenterologist is warning that scrolling through videos on TikTok can cause hemorrhoids. Dr. David L Schwarzbaum warns that one common cause of ‘roids is from “sitting on the toilet for a prolonged time.” And his “10-15” rule could be your savior when it comes to keeping your bum healthy, and avoiding “TikTok Tush”. While sitting on the toilet, blood tends to pool in the lowest point, causing increased pressure on the blood vessels in that sensitive area, leading that that itchy and painful affliction that no one really wants to talk about. The good doctor recommends that no matter how skillful the video app’s algorithm is in keeping you watching, you should “limit bowel movements to 10-15 minutes at most, to reduce the risk of hemorrhoids.” He also counsels his patients “to avoid scrolling on phones or reading for prolonged periods on the toilet” (…and make sure you “swipe right”!)

DID YOU KNOW?
This year, more than 38 million enormous TVs have been sold in the US, 10 times more than in 2023. Those would be the ones measuring 97 inches or more across. Industry analysts say that thanks to plunging prices, many people are replacing the TVs bought during the pandemic with these XXL models. The average cost of a TV of that size is now $3,113, compared to $6,662 in 2023. BTW, when Samsung introduced its first 98-inch TV in 2019, it cost $99,000. One enthusiast explained the devices’ appeal, saying, “You’re sitting watching TV with a person on TV that is the same size as you.” (Just don’t expect it to fit under the Christmas tree!)

BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Abet & Aid Punsters Day”, a day to make up incredibly bad puns, as proclaimed by the group Punsters Unlimited. The Most PUNderful Story We Could Find: “Did you hear about the Italian chef that died? He pasta way. We cannelloni do so much. His legacy will become a pizza history. Here today, gone tomato. How sad that he ran out of thyme. Sending olive my prayers to the family. His wife, cheese still not over it. You never sausage a tragic thing.”
• “Cappuccino Day”, a good excuse to treat yourself to a kick of caffeine. Cappuccino was created in Italy in the 1600s. The name comes from an Italian order of monks known as the Catholic Capuchins. It’s prepared with espresso, hot milk, and a cap of foam.
• “Cook Something Bold & Pungent Day”, to offset the coming chills of Winter. What’s the most pungent thing you can cook? Cabbage rolls? Fish? Lamb? Garlic? Onions? (Whatever it is that Karen heats up in the office microwave 3 times a week?)
• “Dunce Day”, commemorating the anniversary of the death of Scottish philosopher, John Duns Scotus in 1308. He believed that cone-shaped hats increased learning potential, by allowing knowledge to flow from the point of the cap, down, and into the head of the wearer, making that person smarter. (Today, of course, anyone wearing a dunce cap is thought to be, well, a dunce!)
• “Parents as Teachers Day”. Check out any kid who’s constantly scoring an ‘A’ and you’ll likely find that kid gets a lot of help at home (or their parent IS a teacher!)
• “X-ray Day”. It was Nov. 8, 1895 that physicist Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen first observed X-rays, a significant scientific advancement that would ultimately benefit a variety of fields, most of all medicine, by making the invisible…visible.
• “World Pianist Day”, not to be confused with “Piano Day”. This day is about people and their achievements with the instrument, and the emotions that pianists give us with their talents. (So, just for today, keep your “pianist” jokes to yourself…)
SATURDAY:
• “Chaos Never Dies Day”, the one day of the year to acknowledge that chaos is essential to a harmonious universe (and if you don’t believe that chaos never dies, visit a daycare center sometime!)
• “Go to an Art Museum Day”, a day to enjoy wonderful sculptures and beautiful paintings. Many art museums have days when admission reduced or free, so if you’ve never been to one … try it!
• “Fried Chicken Sandwich Day”. They aren’t a new thing, but they took on a new life in the fast-food world following the release of Popeyes’ very popular chicken sandwich. Now, you can expect to see them on the menus of most restaurants, and today, many offer special deals.
• “World Freedom Day”, begun in 2001 to commemorate the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of Communist rule in Central and Eastern Europe. One year later, Germany became a single territory again.
• “Carl Sagan Day”, on the renowned astronomer and scientist’s birth date (1934). No other person has ever been able to reach and teach so many non-scientists in such a meaningful way.
• “National Scrapple Day”. Similar in both composition and taste to British white pudding, its name comes from the fact that it is composed of “scraps” of pork combined with cornmeal and spices. The mixture is formed into a mostly solid loaf, and then it is sliced and pan-fried before serving.
• “Greek Yogurt Day”. Also known as strained yogurt, yogurt cheese, sack yogurt, or kerned yogurt, it is yogurt that has been strained to remove most of its whey, resulting in a thicker consistency than normal yogurt, while still preserving the distinctive sour taste. (Basically, it’s the kind that kids won’t eat!)
SUNDAY:
• “Vanilla Cupcake Day”. While they may not be most people’s favorite cupcake, hardly anyone DIS-likes them. Another advantage is that any kind of frosting tastes good on them. (You’ll notice it is plural . . . ‘CupcakeSSS Day’, so have as many as you want!)
• “Forget-Me-Not Day”, for remembering those whose lives have touched us in some way. You’re encouraged to think of people who had an impact on your life and the way in which they changed it. (Then go see a lawyer and file charges…)
• “Sesame Street Day”, saluting the 1969 debut of the landmark children’s TV show on PBS. It was the first preschool educational TV show to base its contents on laboratory research. (I suppose we should order a “Bert-day cake”!)
• “World Science Day for Peace & Development, established by UNESCO in 2001, to highlight the significant role of science in society and the need to engage the public in debates on emerging scientific issues. (I’ve heard a few too many debates on some scientific issues lately…) LINK: https://tinyurl.com/y2bnxb8b
• “Accounting Day”, an annual observance to promote the profession and provide an opportunity for networking among accountants in public practice, industry, and government. (Sounds exciting.)
• “Area Code Day”. They were introduced in the 1940’s to solve the issue of not enough phone numbers to go around. Initially, densely populated regions were assigned codes with lower numbers at the beginning and end. Why? It was determined that those in urban areas should be able to dial faster. And how do you make rotary phones dial faster? By using lower numbers, which had a shorter “pull time”.
• “Tongue Twister Day”. “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.” “A quick-witted cricket critic.” “She sells seashells by the sea shore.” What other tongue twisters can you think of to celebrate this tongue-twisting holiday? (Maybe just read a Dr. Suess Book?)
• “Civic Pride Day”, in the US, a day to inspire everyone to promote the dynamic communities they live in. A reminder to help maintain a healthy city or town, and to get involved and help improve the place where you live.
