FUN FACTS ABOUT TURKEYS:
• Turkeys are more than just big chickens. More than 45 million years of evolution separates the 2 species.
• The wild turkey was hunted nearly to extinction by the early 1900s, when the population reached a low of around 30,000 birds. But restoration programs across North America have brought the numbers up to about 7 million today.
• Male turkeys are called ‘gobblers’ after the gobble call they make to announce themselves to females. Other turkey sounds include ‘purrs’, ‘yelps’, and ‘kee-kees’.
• Both gobblers and hens have a ‘snood’ (a dangle-y appendage on the face), a ‘wattle’ (the red bit hanging under the chin), and only a few feathers on the head.
• Studies have shown that female turkeys prefer males with long snoods, and that snood-length can also be used to predict the winner of a competition between 2 males.
• A group of related male turkeys will band together to court females, though only one member of the group gets to mate.

HANGOVERS AFTER 40:
It’s not your imagination … hangovers really do get worse with age, University of Pennsylvania researchers say. Once you hit 40, you may find that drinking like you did in your 20s leaves you feeling worse for wear in the morning. A few reasons why …
• We lose muscle mass and gain body fat when we get older, which makes us more prone to the effects of alcohol.
• Alcohol is mainly metabolized in the liver and, as we enter our 50s, the organ becomes bigger but less efficient.
• As we age, we’re more likely to take meds. Some rely on the same metabolizing enzymes in the liver as alcohol, so mixing them can raise blood-alcohol levels or cause health problems.
• Alcohol impacts sleep no matter what our age, and, since older adults may have poorer sleep to begin with, this can make a hangover headache much worse.
• People tend to drink less in their 40s and 50s than they did in their 20s and 30s, so they have a lower tolerance for alcohol and are more sensitive to its effects.

AYE, ‘STRUE:
Scotland could be independent from Britain on March 24, 2016 if voters back leaving the UK in an upcoming independence referendum (September 18, 2014). The proposed date of independence is included in the ‘White Paper’, being published on Tuesday. The 670-page document serves as a guide to an independent Scotland and is said to be the most comprehensive and detailed blueprint of its kind ever published, not just for Scotland but for any prospective independent country. What may become Scotland’s ‘Independence Day’ is also the 413th anniversary of the Union of England & Scotland in 1603. (How apropos.)

HEAD CHEESE:
Cheese is made from the biological efforts of molds and bacteria. But what if those bacteria came not from a cow, goat, sheep, but were colonized from a human nose, tears, toe, or belly button? At Dublin, Ireland’s Science Gallery, artists and cheesemakers have lovingly harvested human microbes and cultured them into several delicious-looking but mentally off-putting wheels of cheese as part of an exhibition called ‘Selfmade’. 11 cheeses have been made from bacteria collected from artists and scientists’ body parts, including tear ducts, belly button, the inside of a nose, and a mouth. Not surprisingly, the odors of the ensuing cheeses and the original body odors are said to be similar. (Erp. Anyone got a slop bucket handy?)
