BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Four months after the slap seen around the world, Will Smith is feeling the after-effects more than Chris Rock. Data from Q Scores, the longtime industry standard for quantifying celebrities’ star power and appeal, indicates Smith’s numbers tanked months after the Academy Awards ceremony, when he smacked presenter Chris Rock on live TV. Before the incident, Smith consistently ranked among the top 5 or 10 most positively rated actors in Q Scores’ semi-annual surveys. This placed him alongside such beloved figures as Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington. But between Q Scores’ January survey before the Oscars, and July, Smith’s positive Q Score plummeted from a stellar 39 to 24, (A positive Q Score of 24 means 24% of those surveyed who know of Smith count him as one of their favorite personalities.) At the same time, Smith’s negative rating more than doubled. Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith also saw significant damage to her public image, and in contrast, Chris Rock’s ratings were unaffected by the slap.

★ Scott Disick was involved in a car accident in his Lamborghini Urus over the weekend. The “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” star’s ride is reported to have flipped after he reportedly smashed into a stone mailbox. The incident took place in a gated community in Calabasas, California, and police forces have been quoted as saying Disick was alone in the car and “didn’t appear impaired.” Disick is said to have suffered a minor cut to the head and refused medical attention when paramedics arrived. It’s not known what made the car flip, but speed appears to have been a factor. Pics from the scene show the Lamborghini on its side.

★ Sports gambling websites are taking bets on who will be Kim Kardashian’s next boyfriend. Kim K. is newly single after ending her 9-month relationship with Pete Davidson, and sites like Bovada and OddsChecker are now offering odds on her next suitor — including some former flames, rumored beaus and pure wild cards. In the top spot is CNN contributor Van Jones with +800 odds or an 11.1% implied chance of happening, according to OddsChecker. He and Kardashian have become friendly over the past few years as the Skims founder studies to become a lawyer. Kardashian’s ex-lovers Ray J and Nick Cannon tie with +1,000. Other top contenders include Jamie Foxx, Cincinnati Bengals running back Chris Evans, and even Harry Styles.

★ Come on, Barbie, let’s go party… again. Ryan Gosling is in talks to join Margot Robbie in a new “Ocean’s Eleven”, according to reports. The project would see the duo reteam after playing ‘Ken’ and ‘Barbie’ in Greta Gerwig’s hotly-anticipated “Barbie” movie, which is due in theaters next year. Warner is eyeing a 2023 production start for the Ocean’s movie, which is not officially greenlit yet. It’s set to be directed by Jay Roach, with Robbie co-producing. Roach and Robbie previously collaborated on 2019’s “Bombshell”, for which she earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Boom. That’s it.”

SHOOTING THE BULL

BE KINDER REMINDER:
A new study says that performing random acts of kindness has a bigger impact on the recipient than people realize. Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin found that not only does the recipient of a good deed generally feel more positive after these interactions, they also “pay it forward”, spreading the kindness and generosity to others. Those who do good deeds typically focus on the object or service they’re providing — such as giving a gift or helping someone cross the street. What the study determined is that recipients of good deeds focus more on the feelings of warmth the act evokes. Simply put, recipients of an act of kindness care more about the thought someone put into this gesture, rather than the gift itself. The researchers summed up their study by saying: “Performers (of acts of kindness) don’t realize how much of an impact they’re having on people…and that can stand in the way of these behaviors.”
(However, it should be pointed out that the researchers still advise against “killing people with kindness…”)
(What’s the most surprising “random act of kindness” you’ve ever experienced?)

TECH TALK:
➢ Weeks after Airbnb said it would permanently ban parties at properties rented through its platform, the company is deploying so-called “anti-party technology” in the US and Canada to enforce the measure. The new system analyzes a variety of factors, including previous reviews, how long a user has been on the platform, the length of the stay and whether the rental is occurring on a weekend or weekday. The goal, according to Airbnb, is to “help identify potentially high-risk reservations” and prevent those users from completing a booking. Those who are unable to book homes because of the anti-party tech will have the option to reserve a hotel room or a private room (where the owner is likely to be present) through the platform. (I already have anti-party technology…my over-the-limit credit card!)
➢ AI-driven chatbot technology allowed a woman to answer questions from beyond the grave at her own funeral. The technology was provided by her son, who runs a company that creates “holographic conversational video experiences”, and allowed British holocaust campaigner Marina Smith to be “present, in a sense”, according to son Stephen Smith. The experience used StoryFile, an AI conversational bot that uses 20 cameras and recordings of the subject to create a digital, holographic clone that can be interacted with. The answers given to questions were entirely Mrs. Smith’s own words. To do this, the subject is interviewed while alive, and asked a large array of questions about their life. The data is then fed into StoryFile, which selects the appropriate recordings to play in answer to questions asked at the funeral. Reportedly, mourners were able to dive into her fascinating life in a morbid but futuristic tribute. (And the blooper reel was HILARIOUS!)

LATER, GATOR:
A Texas dad who wrangled an alligator at his front doorstep says he knew what to do from years of watching “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin on TV. Mike Trinh of Houston thought his young daughter was joking when she told him a gator was blocking the door on the first day of school. The restaurant owner threw a towel on the alligator’s head to calm it down. Then he got on the gator’s back, held its mouth closed, and enlisted his 19-year-old daughter to tape its mouth shut. Trinh and a friend then loaded the alligator in the back of a truck and released it into a nearby pond. On Facebook, he wrote: “All my years watching Steve Irwin, I figured I can deal with any wildlife as long as it ain’t a stingray.”
(What? Too soon?)
(He’s already been made an honorary “Florida Man”!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Queen Elizabeth’s former private chef claims that she has eaten the same sandwich (more or less) every day since she was 5. Darren McGrady, who cooked for Liz for 15 years, spoke in a YouTube video about afternoon tea at Buckingham Palace, specifically during palace garden parties. In the clip, he explains that he would prepare a “selection of different sandwiches” and there’s one filling in particular that’s an absolute staple. Quote: “The Queen was served jam pennies in the nursery as a little girl, she’s had them for afternoon tea ever since. Simple – just bread and jam with a little butter, usually strawberry jam.” Other sandwich fillings favored by HRH include cucumber with a minty cream cheese, and tomato and cheese. • “Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade & Its Abolition”, designated by UNESCO in 1998 as an annual observance to reflect on “the historic causes, the methods, and the consequences of the slave trade”.
• “Hug Your Sweetheart Day”, an annual excuse to let your beloved know that he or she is always there in your fondest thoughts. Gag.
• “Sponge Cake Day”, celebrating the fat-free dessert that’s based on flour, sugar, and eggs. It has a firm yet well-aerated structure, similar to a sea sponge. (And is no good until it is covered with icing, whip cream, ice cream, or all 3!)
• “Buttered Corn Day”, are you a butter spreader or full cob roller? (Depends on who’s looking?)
• “Internaut Day”, No one’s sure exactly why we celebrate it Aug. 23, but today’s the day we celebrate the invention of the World Wide Web. The World Wide Web and the internet are distinct from each other, and an “internaut” is a person who has a deep knowledge of how to use the internet, as well as of its history. (Anyone know the difference between the internet and the World Wide Web?)

BULL’S BITS

BS WHACK FACTS:
✓ There are 12 times more trees on Earth than stars in the Milky Way.
✓ Rainbows are actually circular. We don’t typically see a full circle rainbow because the Earth’s horizon blocks the lower part.
✓ Wind doesn’t make a sound until it blows against an object.
✓ Gold never erodes.
✓ Fruit stickers are edible, though like fruit, washing prior to eating is recommended.
✓ If you point your car fob to your head, it increases the signal range.

FUNNY (REAL) PARENTING TWEETS:
• Asked to switch seats on the plane because I was sitting next to a crying baby. Apparently, that’s not allowed if the baby is yours.

• I’m approving my kids’ friends based on which parents I think would drink wine with me during play dates.
• My 4-year-old just shut the bathroom door on me while I was inside and told me I was in jail. So I locked the door. I love this game.
• Watching “Frozen” again with my daughter because we paid $19.99 to download it so she’s going to watch it every day until college.
• Apparently a 2-year-old getting her hair washed and an exorcism sound oddly similar.
• Just taught my kids about taxes by eating 38% of their ice cream.
• *looks up from phone* “Kids!! we’re leaving the playground in 22 percent.”
• Kids are just so… so… Awake in the mornings.”
