BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ A trial began yesterday for Linda O’Leary, the wife of “Shark Tank” star and businessman Kevin O’Leary, who is charged in a boat crash that killed two people. The collision — which took place on Lake Joseph, north of Toronto on the night of Aug. 24, 2019 — also left three people injured. Linda O’Leary faces one charge of careless operation of a vessel under the Canada Shipping Act. Her lawyer has previously said she is a “cautious” and “experienced” boater, and described the incident as a “terrible tragedy.”

★ A man was arrested outside Kylie Jenner’s home when police arrived on the scene and he refused to leave until he could tell her how much he loved her. The man had previously been spotted by Jenner’s security team at her home, but had followed instructions and left when told. This time, he refused to GO until he could see Jenner face to face, something her security team would not allow. Instead, they detained him until police arrived to place him under arrest. The intruder was reportedly charged with misdemeanor trespassing and subsequently released.

★ John Krasinski’s nearly silent thriller “A Quiet Place Part II” has crossed a notable box office milestone. It is the first film of the pandemic era to surpass $100 million in U.S. ticket sales. Through the weekend, “A Quiet Place 2” had generated $108 million at the domestic box office and another $80 million internationally. Directed by Krasinski and starring Emily Blunt, the film eclipsed the $100 million box office benchmark in 15 days. That wouldn’t be a particularly notable feat prior to COVID-19, but the pandemic has been crushing to the movie theater business and ticket sales have been slow to recover. A Quiet Place 2 was also the first blockbuster in months to play exclusively in theaters. On July 12, it will land on the streaming service Paramount Plus.

★ When Keanu Reeves’ ‘John Wick’ returns in his fourth big-screen outing, so will the ‘Bowery King’. Laurence Fishburne has confirmed he’ll be returning to reprise the character he played in “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum”. In an interview promoting his role in Liam Neeson’s new Netflix thriller “The Ice Road”, Fishburne said he “should be going to Berlin within another couple of months or so” for filming. While he wouldn’t reveal any plot details, he promised the bar is being raised.

• Kesha – will star in the new scripted musical sci-fi podcast series “Electric Easy”, premiering July 19th. • Pink Floyd — Roger Waters has lashed out against the Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, revealing he was recently offered a “huge, huge amount of money” for the rights to use the group’s song ‘Another Brick in the Wall Pt 2’ in a film promoting Instagram and Facebook. Besides calling Zuckerberg an “idiot”, Waters called the offer “an insidious movement of them to take over absolutely everything.”
• Robert Plant — says music kept him sane during lockdown. Although he didn’t have any set artists or songs which he’d always listen to, he explained: “I would associate myself . . . with times in my life which had really deep resonance, and I would go to those eras.”

• Florida Georgia Line – Brian Kelley will release his first solo album on June 25. • Zac Brown Band – Zac Brown says their new song ‘Same Boat’ is about the fact that people are actually all the same, rather than how we are all different. Quote: “We go through a lot of the same things and it’s a reflection of being a human-being.”
• Reba McEntire — will be performing as part of the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular. She has joined a lineup that includes Coldplay, OneRepublic and Black Pumas. The 2021 event, which will be aired in NBC, will be the biggest yet, with plans to set off 65,000 shells alongside other pyrotechnics.

SHOOTING THE BULL

“WORKING” FROM HOME:
As employees begin to trickle back into their offices, it has to be a welcome site for bosses – because a new study has found that remote work reduces productivity. A survey of the remote work habits of 10,000 employees at an Asian technology company found a 20% decrease in output. Although the at-home workers did tend to put in longer hours, they were found to be not as efficient as they would be in a structured workplace. Although the workers actually spent 30% more time working from home, their productivity fell as they spent more time in meetings with their bosses to constantly outline their responsibilities. Staff at the tech firm were involved in particularly challenging work, and researchers point out that workers in less-skilled positions might be better suited to working remotely.
(Which is why [***co-host***] has been doing this show from home for over a year now!)
(This surprised me. I mean, it’s not like I can’t spend 20% of my working time on Facebook while I’m at the office, too!)
(I know that’s completely true of me when I’m working from home. I mean, except for the “putting in 30% more time” part!)

THEY’RE BOXY, BUT THEY’RE GOOD:
Hawaiian tourists have discovered an ingenious hack to avoid paying the drastically inflated rates being charged for rental cars these days: renting a U-Haul. That’s right. In a year when we’ve seen prices soar for the most unexpected items, auto rental prices have increased by nearly 506%, according to the Cleveland Federal Reserve. And with a finite number of rental cars available on the Hawaiian Islands, some people are balking at the idea of paying upwards of $500 per day, and have instead decided to rent a box moving truck to ferry them around while on vacation. Many of the moving vans can be had for about $100 per day, plus mileage and gas. U-Haul has confirmed that it seems more and more visitors to Hawaii have gotten wise to the idea, and has posted an update on its website, saying it “does not condone visitors using moving trucks and vans for leisure purposes.”
(Well, THAT should do the trick!)
(If you ever saw the way my wife shops on vacation, you’d know this is by no means a new idea!)
(It’s tough to rent one at the airport, though…)

OLD OPERATING SYSTEM:
It looks like Grandma and Grandpa have entered the smartphone conversation. A new study has found that the over-65 crowd have finally mastered the art of the text. In fact, one in three now prefer texting to phone calls. According to the recent survey of America seniors, figuring out texting and social media has given them a lot of joy because it is a great way to bond with their grandkids. Their favorite emojis are the heart (43%) and the happy face (43%). Other popular emojis for seniors are the beer emoji and assorted animals. One in 10 even send GIFs to stay in touch with their grandchildren. One in 3 seniors said the pandemic prompted them to learn how to use social media, and 17% say their children or grandkids introduced them to Netflix during COVID.
(The grandkids probably showed them Netflix to get a break from all those animal emojis Grandma was sending!)
(Great. Now maybe one of those seniors would like to show ME how to send a GIF…)
(And fortunately, kids had a lot of spare time to answer Grandpa’s calls every time he had a problem on Facebook!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Michael Packard, the lobster diver from Cape Cod who hit headlines last week after he found himself in the mouth of a humpback whale but somehow ended up being spat out and swimming to safety, has cheated death before, it turns out. In November 2001, he was onboard a flight from San José to Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica that crashed, killing 3 people. Packard managed to survive, sustaining severe facial injuries and multiple broken bones in his arms and legs. The lobsterman and 4 other passengers also survived 2 nights in the jungle before they were found by rescuers.

• “Smile Power Day”, recognizing the 2nd-best thing you can do with your lips. (After whistling.)

• “World Elder Abuse Awareness Day”, the 16th annual, when we’re encouraged to show the world we care about ending elder abuse and neglect by wearing something purple. LINK: https://www.un.org/development/desa/ageing/world-elder-abuse-awareness-day.html

• “Justice for Janitors Day”, They have historically faced an uphill battle to be recognized for the important work they do for public health and safety, and many are paid close to minimum wage.
