BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Will Smith has acknowledged that his fans may not be “ready” to watch him on screen in the upcoming drama “Emancipation.” The movie is his first project following his controversial slapping of Chris Rock at the Oscars earlier this year. During an interview on the show “Good Day DC,” Kevin McCarthy asked Smith what he “would tell people who say ‘I’m not ready’ ” to watch him again. His answer: “I would absolutely respect that and allow them their space to not be ready. My deepest concern is my team – [director Antoine Fuqua] has done what I think is the greatest work of his entire career.” Smith elaborated, saying that his “deepest hope” is that his actions don’t “penalize” his team. The film stars Smith as a runaway slave named ‘Peter’ who finds asylum in Louisiana and winds up joining the Union Army. “Emancipation” will premiere in theaters Dec. 2, and on Apple TV+ on Dec. 9.

★ Laughter appears to be the best medicine for Jay Leno. Two weeks after suffering serious burns in a fuel fire, the 72-year-old returned to stand-up comedy Sunday night. Speaking with reporters outside the Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa Beach, California, Leno made light of the accident, assuring everyone that he felt good, and joking: “I never thought of myself as a roast comic.” He also joked that he had “two shows tonight: regular and extra crispy.” A frequent performer at the comedy spot, Leno’s show on Sunday was sold-out, according to a club spokesperson. The former Tonight Show host performed for more than an hour, and “looked great” and was “full of energy”, according to a clubgoer interviewed by NBC.

★ Nicole Kidman received a warm welcome on Broadway Saturday night when she made a surprise appearance at a performance of Hugh Jackman’s “The Music Man” revival. During an auction for the charity Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Kidman made her presence known when she bid the hefty sum of $100,000 for a hat signed by Jackman. Taking the mic at the Winter Garden Theatre, Kidman said: “I love you. I love Broadway. And I love what they do, Broadway Cares, but I also want to say this show is extraordinary.” Kidman’s shouted bid of $100,000 drew an enthused response from the crowd, leading Jackman to joke “I just want to be clear, this is not Australian dollars.” Jackman and Kidman are two of Hollywood’s most prominent Australian actors.

★ The Netflix original series about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry may have its release date at last. Sources close to the production say it will drop on Thursday, Dec. 8. This is surprisingly soon, especially considering that the docuseries still doesn’t even have a title. The Duke and Duchess have been quietly working with Netflix on a documentary series about their lives, but their plans to release it have become complicated. Reportedly, Netflix decided to hold off on releasing it after the generally negative reaction to “The Crown” Season 5. This series is part of a multi-million-dollar deal that the Sussexes struck with the streamer when they first left their royal duties behind and moved to live in the US.

• Dua Lipa – Does she have a Rolling Stones collab in the works? Saturday, she shared pics of her and 79-year-old Mick Jagger together in a recording studio, with the caption: “Sweeeet weeeek.” No official word, yet, but the Stones are set to drop a new album next year. • Journey — Neal Schon says that Journey is not ending, despite his financial dispute with bandmate Jonathan Cain. • Eurythmics – have reportedly been offered about $120 million to reform for a world tour. The duo split in 1990, but have reunited several times since. Apparently, their recent performance at their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, has stirred the interest of promoters.

• Kelsea Ballerini – Her new “dream home” is already familiar to some country fans. It previously belonged to Kacey Musgraves, who featured it in a magazine photo spread before selling it. Ballerini paid $2.5 million for the 4-bedroom, 3-bathroom, 3,500-square-foot home in a fancy area of Nashville in a deal that closed Nov. 16, the day after she finalized her divorce from Morgan Evans.
• Keith Urban – says the country music community is being “ripped apart” during a time when people should be coming together. In an interview, he said: “We’re really a tight family, and we all need each other,” but he has felt a rift developing lately. He didn’t share specifics, except to say “It’s getting ripped apart…multitudes of reasons, and I think keeping it strong and keeping it together is really important.”
• Sam Hunt, Alan Jackson and Kacey Musgraves – are some of the stars who have decorated Christmas trees to support Gaylord Opryland Resort’s 39th annual A Country Christmas event, to benefit the First Responder’s Children’s Foundation. WEIGHTING FOR CHRISTMAS:
As we enter the holiday season, or as we call it in my family, “the eating season”, new research shows that a quarter of us are still carrying the weight we gained at the end of last year. A survey of 2,000 people shows that 60% of us gained weight toward the end of 2021, probably due to the fun and food of the season. But despite the fact that 24% of us never lost our holiday weight gain, we’re still planning to go hardcore again this year — in fact, 4 in 10 respondents (42%) are using the end of the year as an excuse to postpone eating healthily. Conducted by OnePoll, the survey, conducted in the US, found that 60% of those planning to postpone their healthy habits over the holidays — have already started, admitting mid-November is their cut-off. The average respondent expects to gain 5½ pounds (2.5kg) before 2023 — and that’s on top of any weight they’re still carrying around from last year’s indulgences. On the plus side, 46% plan to make a New Year’s resolution. The most common one is to save more money, followed by eating healthier and exercising more.

A bit of good news, if you’re a parent concerned that your child is too young to have a smartphone. There is no significant link between childhood phone ownership and kids’ well-being, according to new research out of Stanford University. Researchers followed more than 250 children from low-income families for 5 years, to track their well-being as they transitioned to phone ownership. They found the age at which kids received their first phones had no meaningful impact on their grades, sleep habits or depression symptoms. Whether or not the children in the study had a mobile phone, and when they got their first mobile phone, did not affect their well-being, according to lead author Xiaoran Sun. As a result, “There doesn’t seem to be a golden rule about waiting until eighth grade or a certain age” to allow your child to get a smartphone.
(My 7-year-old wants an iPhone. I told her OK, as long as she gets good grades and does her chores. Otherwise, she’ll get a cheaper phone. . . because “it’s my way or the Huawei”!)

➢ “Good” cholesterol might not be as good as we thought, according to a new study. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) has been referred to as “good cholesterol” by medical experts, because it absorbs “bad” cholesterol”. But a new study carried out by researchers at Oregon Health & Science University shows that high levels of HDL (good) cholesterol aren’t always associated with a lower chance of cardiovascular events. What’s more, low levels of HDL (good) cholesterol were found to have increased cardiovascular disease risk for White patients, but the same wasn’t true for Black patients. (I’m not the first to say it, but I drive WAAAY too fast to worry about cholesterol!)
➢ The widely-held belief that humans need to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day — also known as the 8 x 8 rule — is simply not true, according to scientists. Researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison conducted the most comprehensive research on hydration and the human body to date, measuring the water consumption of more than 5,600 people from 26 countries. They found that water consumption varies widely around the world, ranging from about 4 to 25 cups a day. Water needs peak for men in their 20s, while they remain level for women from age 20-55, but only vary by about 2 glasses for each gender, with men requiring more. Physical activity level contributed to the largest differences in water turnover, followed by gender, the Human Development Index (those living in less-developed countries require more drinking water), and age. (…and whether I had to cook for myself that day!)

A Florida woman is suing the parent company of Velveeta’s microwavable Shells & Cheese cups, because she says it takes longer to prepare the meal than the 3½ minutes the box label says. Amanda Ramirez is the plaintiff in the $5 million class-action lawsuit that was filed against Kraft Heinz Foods. The claim quotes the 4 steps to prepare the meal that are printed on the box, and alleges that the 3½ ready time is “just the length of time to complete one of several steps” (the time it takes to microwave the product), and doesn’t include the time needed to mix in other ingredients, as instructed in previous steps. The suit does not state how long it took Ramirez to prepare the cups for eating. (But when you consider how long it takes to rip the top off the box, you can understand her concern…!)
