BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
***UPDATE*** ★ Rihanna will be the 2023 Super Bowl Halftime Show headliner. After rumors began swirling Sunday morning that she was in discussions for the gig, Ri Ri took to Instagram to further stoke the chatter by sharing a photo of herself holding an NFL-branded football. The NFL subsequently confirmed the news after retweeting a post by Roc Nation, which includes the same pic Rihanna shared. Super Bowl LVII will take place on Feb. 12, 2023 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. ★ Louise Fletcher, who won an Academy Award for her role as the tyrannical ‘Nurse Ratched’ in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” died Friday at her home in France. She was 40 and largely unknown when cast as the head administrative nurse at a mental institution in the film, which not only landed a best actress Oscar for Fletcher, it won best picture, best director, best actor for Jack Nicholson, and best adapted screenplay. The American Film Institute later named Nurse Ratched one of the most memorable villains in film history and the second most notable female villain, surpassed only by the Wicked Witch of the West in “The Wizard of Oz.” Louise Fletcher was 88.

★ The voice of the Dark Side now belongs to other forces. More than 4 decades after he first voiced arguably cinema’s most famous villain, James Earl Jones has ended his career as ‘Darth Vader’. The 91-year-old has agreed to allow a Ukrainian AI company to replicate his voice for future “Star Wars” releases. Sound artists at Lucasfilm and the Ukrainian AI speech company Respeecher digitally recreated Jones’ voice for the recently released Disney+ series “Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi”. Though Hayden Christensen wore Vader’s infamous suit in the series, it was Respeecher that provided his voice. Jones’ family says he was pleased with the results and gave them permission to continue recreating his voice in future projects.

★ “Better Call Saul” star Rhea Seehorn has her next gig lined up. While plot details are being kept under wraps, we know that Seehorn has landed the starring role in Vince Gilligan’s next series, which he created and will work as showrunner and exec producer for. It has a 2-season order from Apple, and in a statement, Gilligan said: “After 15 years, I figured it was time to take a break from writing antiheroes… and who’s more heroic than the brilliant Rhea Seehorn?” She’s the latest Better Call Saul star to set up a new series. Bob Odenkirk will lead the AMC series “Straight Man,” while Giancarlo Esposito will star in the drama “Parish”, also for AMC.

★ John Cena is adding another trophy to his belt. The wrestler-turned-actor has broken the Guinness World Record for the most Make-A-Wish Foundation wishes granted with 650. He’s the most requested Make-A-Wish celebrity, with no other star even coming close. Cena has been granting wishes since 2002, a few years after he began his career as a professional wrestler. As his popularity as a 16-time world champion soared, so did children’s requests for him to grant their wishes. When he was honored for granting 500 wishes in 2015, Cena said: “I just drop everything. If I can offer a fantastic experience, I’ll be first in line to do my part.”

SHOOTING THE BULL

ENLIGHTNING YOU ON LIGHTNING:
It turns out that when Granny told you as a kid that you shouldn’t shower or bathe during a thunderstorm, she was right. Where there’s thunder, there’s lightning, and lighting can kill or maim in ways you’d least expect, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The agency cautions that since lightning can travel through plumbing, “it is best to avoid all water during a thunderstorm”, including showering, bathing washing dishes and washing hands. It notes that the risk of lightning traveling through plumbing is probably less with plastic pipes than with metal pipes, but “it’s best to avoid any contact with plumbing and running water during a lightning storm to reduce your risk of being struck”. And the CDC says that’s not the only danger. You should stay off porches and balconies, don’t go near windows and doors, and don’t “lie down on concrete floors or lean against concrete walls.” Furthermore: don’t “use anything connected to an electrical outlet, such as computers or other electronic equipment.” The CDC says you should “Stay off corded phones”, but cell phones and cordless phones are safe, “if they are not connected to an outlet through a charger.”
(Thank goodness! How else would I be able to post that it’s storming out?)
(Some say the safest place to be is in a church, but I’m pretty sure I’d be struck by lightning if I ever went there!)

MEDICATION OPTIMIZATION:
Having you been taking your pills wrong? Researchers at Johns Hopkins University say you should consider your posture when taking medication. They found whether you’re standing upright or leaning, as well as which side you’re leaning to, can affect how fast the contents of a pill are absorbed into your body. The bottom line is that leaning to your right side after swallowing a pill could speed absorption by about 13 minutes, compared to staying upright. Leaning to the left? Bad idea – that could slow absorption by more than an hour. They say that standing or sitting up straight is “still an excellent way” to take a pill, but, if you’re lying down afterward, turning to your right side could significantly speed up the rate at which the drug is going to be absorbed by your body. A person’s posture affects the rate of dissolution of the pills for 2 reasons: the shape of the stomach and gravity.
(And if it’s sleeping pills you’re taking, they suggest very strongly that you lie down!)
(…and once again, the ‘shape of my stomach’ causes me problems!)

NEW GOOD NEWS:
➢ By turning discarded chip bags into blankets, a 12-year-old girl in Wales is helping both people in need and the environment. In the last year, Alyssa has collected almost 10,000 chip bags to make 200 blankets. She says it takes about an hour to finish a blanket. How?  “Each packet has to be opened out so it’s flat and then washed…Then you take 4 of them, put them under a piece of baking paper, and iron them together…Finally, you sandwich the … packets between 2 sheets of clear plastic, and you use the iron again to seal that in place.” Chip bags aren’t easy to recycle, so Alyssa is happy to have found another use for them while helping others. She and her mom give the blankets — along with gloves, socks, toothpaste, and other essentials — to local organizations that distribute them to the homeless. Alyssa says of the waterproof blankets: “When you put the blanket around your body, the heat reflects back off the silver part of the packet.”
➢ Online hookup platform Tinder used National Dog Week to match dog rescues with potential owners. The dating app allowed users to attach a dog in need of a forever home to their profiles for the week, which ended on Saturday. That way, users were able to not only look for love — but for a furry friend as well. The company said it “wanted to bring members even more fun ways to find someone new, whether that be a new dog park pal or step-parent for their furry friend.” “Dog lover” is one of the most popular interests added to Tinder profiles. (Would this be referred to as “Dogfishing”?)

SCARY MOVIES:
(***Caution—language***) A film fan who has watched 154 horror movies this year has tweeted his 8 favorites. Dan (@Dan_Draws)’s list ranges from one he calls the “most graphically violent film I’ve seen in a long while” to a 1980s slasher film with “the most bats*** crazy twist ending I’ve ever seen”. Here are his 8 fav horror flicks…just in time for Halloween:
✪ Hell House LLC (2015): Tells the story of a haunted house attraction that accidentally sets up shop in an actual haunted house.
✪ The Sadness (2021): This is the “most graphically violent” one. He calls it a “new twist on the zombie/outbreak genre”.
✪ Sleepaway Camp (1983): This slasher flick is the one he said has the crazy ending. It stars Felissa Rose, as a shy girl who attends a summer camp where the kids and counsellors start dropping like flies in very suspicious circumstances.
✪ “Green Room” (2015): Patrick Stewart plays a bloodthirsty neo-Nazi in this one, which Dan describes as “more of a thriller”, but still “super stressful”.
✪ “Splinter” (2008): Follows “a voracious Splinter parasite that transforms its still-living victims into deadly host”. Dan calls it a “low budget monster siege movie” that’s “really good”.
✪ “Unfriended” (2014): Set entirely on the main character’s computer, things take a turn when a ghost crashes the chatroom and starts causing chaos. Dan says it’s “a lot of fun.”
✪ “Sorority Row” (2019): It’s “dumb but fun”, according to Dan. It follows a group of sorority sisters who cover up the death of their house sister, but are then stalked by a serial killer.
✪ “X” (2022): Dan says it’s a “dirty 70s inspired slasher”. It follows a group of amateur filmmakers who decide to make a porno in rural Texas – but their elderly hosts are not all that they seem.
(How could you watch 154 horror movies in a year? I couldn’t afford that many Doritos!)

DID YOU KNOW?
While it’s a known fact that some kids aren’t big fans of eating greens, a new study shows that dietary preferences could develop before they’re even born. Fetuses create more of a “laughter-face” in the womb when exposed to the flavor of carrots consumed by their mother — and create a “cry-face” response when exposed to kale, according to a study published in the journal Psychological Science. While some studies have suggested that babies can taste and smell in the womb, this is the first research “showing direct evidence of fetal reactions to flavours in the womb.”

BS CHRONOMETER 09.26.22

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “The Start of Rosh Hashanah”, the name means “beginning of the year” in Hebrew, and it is also celebrated as the Jewish New Year. It takes place 163 days after the start of Passover, and is the first day of a 10-period of self-examination and repentance, which ends with Yom Kippur.
• “Better Breakfast Day”, to remind us that eating a healthy breakfast can get you and your family on track to making healthier choices throughout the day, and help curb overeating at other meals. (I’m such a big proponent of eating a good breakfast that I usually have 2!)
• “National Pancake Day”, serve with a variety of syrups, jams, chocolate sauce or even Nutella. Slice fresh fruit and serve on the side. Make Cinnamon Butter by whipping unsalted butter with cinnamon and serving over pancakes. (Not to be confused with “Pancake Tuesday” in February…)
• “Lumberjack Day”, honoring a tough job that’s become a popular sport … logging games. (Also known as “Eat Like a Lumberjack Day”…and you know what lumberjacks LOVE to eat? Pancakes!)
• “Family Day”, created by the Center on Addiction, focuses on getting parents to do things with their children to help create and sustain strong relationships, in order to help prevent teen drug use.
• “World Contraception Day”, to raise awareness about contraception and safe sex. Odd contraceptives used throughout history have included: crocodile dung, animal intestines, blacksmith water, lemon diaphragms, and – ew…brewed tea with beaver testicles (and morning breath!).
• “Johnny Appleseed Day”, celebrated on the anniversary of his death. He was born John Chapman in Massachusetts in 1774, and introduced apples to many orchards in the wilderness of the American Midwest. He then gave or sold trees to pioneers.

➠ Alec Baldwin has listed his 10-Acre historic East Hampton mansion for $29 Million. (The gorgeous property has 7 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms, and an empty mantel where a “Father of the Year” trophy would go.)
