BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ The 1939 Civil War epic “Gone With the Wind” has been temporarily removed from the streaming service HBO Max amid the ongoing protests following the killing of George Floyd. The film has been criticized for years for its positive depiction of slavery and the Antebellum South. HBO released a statement saying: “Gone With the Wind is a product of its time and depicts some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that have, unfortunately, been commonplace in American society. These racist depictions were wrong then and are wrong today, and we felt that to keep this title up without an explanation and a denouncement of those depictions would be irresponsible.” The film is one of the highest grossing movies of all time and won eight Oscars at the 12th Academy Awards.

★ The 2020 Peabody Awards has named “Watchmen,” “Succession,” “Ramy,” “Stranger Things” and “Fleabag” among the 30 most compelling programs of the year. The awards also recognized the PBS series “Frontline” and “The Simpsons” as Institutional Award winners that have made a significant impact on media and culture. Cicely Tyson, known for her work in “How to Get Away With Murder” among many other things, was named winner of the Peabody Career Achievement Award.

★ Lionel Richie’s music will be the focus of a new Disney movie. The musical has the working title “All Night Long”, in honor of Richie’s 1983 chart-topping hit single. The film will not be a biopic, but is expected to be along the lines of “Mamma Mia!”, in which songs by ABBA were at the heart of an original story.

★ Dakota Johnson is heading to the rodeo. She’s set to star in and exec produce “Rodeo Queens”, currently in development at Amazon Studios. The TV series is described as a comedy mockumentary that follows an ensemble of Rodeo Queen hopefuls as they compete for the coveted crown.

• Beyoncé — is reportedly about to sign a $100 million deal to work on three Disney movies. She’ll appear on the soundtrack for Marvel’s “Black Panther”, due for release next year, plus two other blockbusters. She may also provide voice work for some Disney Plus documentaries.
• Iggy Azalea – has given birth to a son. She confirmed the news on her Instagram Story after dodging pregnancy rumors for months. She welcomed her bundle of joy with boyfriend, rapper Playboi Carti, a few months ago.
• Avicii — A new museum dedicated to his life and achievements will open next year in Stockholm, Sweden. The Avicii Experience forms part of a new facility called SPACE, which is geared towards music, gaming and content creation. It will feature a mix of memorabilia and behind-the-scenes photographs and videos.
• Grammys — The term “urban” has been removed from a Grammy Award category to reflect the evolving state of the music industry. ‘Best Urban Contemporary Album’ has been renamed ‘Best Progressive R&B Album’ to “highlight albums that include the more progressive elements of R&B and may include samples and elements of hip-hop, rap, dance, and electronic music.”
• Thin Lizzy — A documentary on the life and career of frontman Phil Lynott will be released to Irish movie theaters in the fall. “Phil Lynott: Songs For While I’m Away” will include interviews with Thin Lizzy members, U2’s Adam Clayton, Suzi Quatro, Huey Lewis, Metallica’s James Hetfield and more.
• The Doors — Five decades after the release of their landmark album “Morrison Hotel”, Z2 Comics has announced a graphic novel will be released on October 13. Morrison Hotel will be formatted as an anthology, in collaboration with the surviving members of the band and drawn by artists from around the comic book world, each weaving the band’s influence into the story.
• John Fogerty – will be among the performers on “United We Sing: A Grammy Salute to the Unsung Heroes”. The June 21 event will be hosted by Harry Connick Jr. and his daughter Georgia as they road trip across the US to “thank and celebrate” essential workers. Also performing: Herbie Hancock, Cyndi Lauper, Little Big Town, Dave Matthews, Tim McGraw and Jamie Foxx, with appearances by Sandra Bullock, Drew Brees, Queen Latifah, Brad Pitt, Oprah Winfrey, Renée Zellweger and more.
• Jimmy Buffett — will give his first-ever performance on the Grand Ole Opry on June 27. He’ll play on a bill that also includes Brad Paisley and Mac McAnally.
• Thomas Rhett – hasn’t let the lockdown slow him down. He says he has written around 35 to 40 new tunes since the coronavirus upended his touring plans this year.

⇒ Dogs are able to detect the presence of Covid-19 on infected patients by sniffing their armpits, according to a new study by French scientists. Researchers at the National Veterinary School trained eight Belgian Malinois shepherd dogs to identify people infected with the coronavirus from odour samples taken from the armpits of more than 360 subjects, both healthy and suffering from Covid-19. The dogs’ success rate was 95%. A dog’s nose is around 100 million times more sensitive than a human’s, and previous studies have shown they can sniff out a variety of diseases, including cancer, diabetes and Parkinson’s. (Apparently coronavirus smells just like a dead squirrel…)
⇒ New research shows that men have taken on a greater share of household chores than expected during the pandemic. Info from the Canadian Review of Sociology shows that men have risen to the occasion, housework-wise, bucking the predictions of sociologists that the pandemic would cause men to do less domestic labour during lockdown. The survey of 1,250 cohabiting parents found that “household division of labour appears to have remained static or become slightly more equal during the period of quarantine, remote work, remote schooling and social distancing.” Fully 40% of fathers said they are cooking more during the pandemic, for example, although only 28% of women thought men were cooking more. The same disparity was found when it comes to doing laundry and cleaning, but both sexes agreed that dad is handling more of the shopping these days. (There you go guys, you’ve convinced yourselves that you’re doing more housework…now you just have to convince HER!)

➢ A Belgian man has been tormented for 10 years – by pizza. The 65-year-old has been the unwitting recipient of a constant stream of pizza deliveries that he didn’t order. Jean Van Landegham initially thought his unwanted deliveries were the result of an address mix-up or an incorrect order, but after years of being inundated with unwanted pies, sometimes as many as 14 at once, he feels that he is the victim of a cheesy culprit. Police are aware of the situation, and when they find the perpetrator, Van Landegham says it “will not be their best day.” (Obviously someone thinks he kneads the dough!)
➢ A man in France has been awarded a $45,000 severance package because his job was “too boring”. Frédéric Desnard, who worked as a manager at a Paris perfume firm, claimed that his $80,000-per-year gig became a “descent into hell” after he lost a key client and was relegated into working monotonous duties, which resulted in him becoming “depressed, destroyed and ashamed.” Doctors seconded his self-diagnosis, resulting his hefty severance, the first “bore-out” case in French history. (Except for when I took my kids to The Louvre…)

Netflix trademarked “Space Force” almost a year before the US military did for the same name. The streaming service registered the name for its satirical show starring Steve Carrell, in Jan. 2019, while the trademark for the youngest branch of the military was founded in Dec. 2019. While some feel that the issue will become acrimonious, there is reportedly no bad blood between the two organizations about it at this time.
