★ Eddie Murphy let slip some major “Shrek” news during a new interview. While promoting his upcoming film “The Pickup”, he was asked about his upcoming role in “Shrek 5”. Murphy said he’s currently recording his parts, but then, he’ll start recording dialogue for a ‘Shrek’ spinoff film centered around his beloved character, ‘Donkey’. Quote: “We start in September on Donkey — we’re doing a Donkey one, and that’ll [be released] 3 years from now.” Murphy has teased a Donkey movie in the past, but these are his most substantive comments yet.

★ Gwyneth Paltrow’s relationship with Luke Wilson tends to get overshadowed by the fact that she dated Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck. But her one-year romance with her “Royal Tenenbaums” costar wasn’t an insignificant chapter of her love life. According to the new book “Gwyneth: The Biography” by journalist Amy Odell, Paltrow even considered starting a family with the actor. It’s unclear how or why Paltrow and Wilson broke up — but around the same time of her family-planning thoughts, Paltrow attended a Coldplay concert, where she met the future father of her children, Chris Martin.

★ More than 3 decades after “Mrs. Doubtfire” hit theaters, one of its stars is dreaming up a way to honor the film’s late and legendary lead Robin Williams. Matthew Lawrence, who played one of the Hillard children in the 1993 comedy, revealed during a Comic-Con appearance that he’d love to see Williams’ iconic voice brought back to life through AI — with support from the late actor’s family, of course. Lawrence was 12 when he starred alongside Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire, the heartwarming hit about a devoted dad who transforms into a Scottish nanny to stay close to his kids following a divorce. Now 45, he says those memories, and Williams’ voice, have stuck with him ever since.

★ Fox will keep it simple with its fall premiere schedule. The network will roll out all of its entertainment lineup in the second half of September, with every show debuting in its regular timeslot. No post-NFL premieres (other than for its regular Sunday animated comedies), no 2-hour openers — just a lineup that’s heavy on game shows and other unscripted fare. Two of the game shows, “Celebrity Name That Tune” and “Celebrity Weakest Link”, will kick off Fox’s season on Sept. 15. The rest of the non-sports lineup will follow, with “Murder in a Small Town” and “Doc” debuting Sept. 23; game shows “The Floor” and “99 to Beat” on Sept. 24; and competition series “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Special Forces” on Sept. 25.

★ Marvel Animation‘s “Eyes of Wakanda” will be released earlier than expected. The 4-part series, originally slated to drop on August 6, then on August 27, now will be released this Friday on Disney+. The action-adventure series follows the adventures of brave Wakandan warriors throughout history. The official logline reads: “In this globe-trotting adventure, the heroes must carry-out dangerous missions to retrieve Vibranium artifacts from the enemies of Wakanda. They are the Hatut Zaraze, and this is their story.”

SHOOTING THE BULL
FUNNY BONE: NOT HOMEGROWN:
How often have you heard someone say something like: “He gets his sense of humor from his dad”? Or from his (or her) Mom? Well, it turns out being funny might not be in your DNA after all. A new study led by Dr. Gil Greengross looked at over 1,300 sets of twins to see if being able to make people laugh — called “humor production ability” — is inherited. Surprisingly, it’s not. While identical twins share all their genes, they weren’t much more similar in joke-telling skills than fraternal ones. The study had participants write cartoon captions and be rated by judges — and the results showed environment mattered to one’s sense of humor more than genetics. The Sklar brothers, who are twin comedians, agree: being raised in a joke-filled household can shape your funny bone. As Jason Sklar put it, “humour is currency in the house” — and kids definitely cash in.
(So my ‘dad-jokes’ aren’t genetic. Just tragic!)
(This totally explains why I’m hilarious — and my brother’s a walking sigh!)

WRIST ASSIST:
Amazon just bought Bee, a startup that makes a bracelet that basically records everything it hears. The wearable AI assistant listens to conversations around you, then uses AI to summarize your day, remind you of stuff, and offer suggestions through its app. For $50 plus a $20 per month fee, you can even let it pull info from your emails, calendar, photos, and more, to help it keep track of your life. The idea is to create a kind of searchable memory on your wrist. Amazon says it’s bringing Bee on board to make AI even more personal and helpful. Bee has a no-audio-storage policy, and Amazon says it “cares deeply” about privacy and will work to give users even more control once the acquisition is finalized. By the way, for those interested in this option, Bee can also be used to provide an analysis of your swearing habits.
(…or you could save yourself $50 and hang out with your Mom more often!)
(I can’t wait for my wrist to interrupt an argument with my wife and tell me: “Actually, you DID say that!”)

MISS MISMATCHES:
You may have heard the theory that women on dating apps are only chasing the top 20% of men — but new research says it’s actually the guys who are reaching too high. A study of nearly 3,000 users of a Czech dating app found that men mostly swiped on women rated as more “desirable” than themselves, while women tended to go for men closer to their own level. Since there were more male users, women ranked higher overall in the dating pool. Even so, women sometimes picked slightly less desirable partners, and most successful matches happened between people of similar appeal. The takeaway? Guys might have better luck if they set more realistic expectations. As the researchers put it, the final matches often reflect women’s preferences — probably because they get more options to choose from – so they usually make the final call.
(So, basically, the study confirmed what her screenshots already showed?)
(And another tip: Guys, if you do “set more realistic expectations” and end up meeting someone nice — I wouldn’t mention that you only got together with her because you decided to lower your standards!)

MOVIES THAT ARE BETTER THAN THE BOOK:
➢ Jurassic Park: Michael Crichton’s novel was thrilling, but Spielberg’s 1993 film perfected it — tighter storytelling, unforgettable characters, and endlessly quotable lines (Such as Jeff Goldblum’s “Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”) Add in groundbreaking practical effects (hello, animatronic T. rex) and you’ve got a cinematic masterpiece that still roars today.
➢ The Talented Mr. Ripley: Patricia Highsmith’s novel is slow-burn psychological suspense, but the 1999 film starring Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow is sleeker, more suspenseful, and emotionally intense. With bolder takes on Ripley’s psychology and a shocking ending, the movie enhances the original’s intrigue and depth.
➢ Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy: Le Carré’s novel is brilliant, but the 2011 film starring adds elegance and focus, with Gary Oldman delivering a career-defining performance. Visually stunning and expertly paced, it captures the cold war’s mood better than words ever could.
➢ The Devil Wears Prada: The movie sharpens the book’s workplace drama with a smarter script and a knockout cast led by Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway. It trades romance for ambition and career realism—and suddenly, cerulean is cultural canon.
➢ The Social Network: David Fincher turned a shaky nonfiction book into a razor-sharp character study of tech ambition and isolation starring Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg. It’s a better story precisely because it doesn’t care about the facts—and that’s the point. (Points deducted for Justin Timberlake’s role as Sean Parker…)
➢ Clear and Present Danger: Tom Clancy’s doorstop of a novel gets trimmed into a fast-paced thriller with Harrison Ford as the moral compass in a sea of corruption. Less military jargon, more political drama — plus, a memo duel for the ages!
(Now: Movies that are waaay WORSE than the book. I’ll start: “The Hobbit” movies!)

DID YOU KNOW?
As climate change forces people to endure increasingly severe and longer lasting heat waves, I’ve got some bad news for you: In addition to the fact that extreme heat can make you feel nauseous, woozy and dehydrated, it also makes you age faster. Prolonged exposure to soaring temperatures can cause a deterioration in our cells and tissues and speed up biological aging, according to a new and growing body of research. An accelerated biological age is the “canary in the coal mine” for future risk of earlier onset of diseases such as cancer, dementia and diabetes, and early death. (You think THAT’S bad? You should see what it’s doing to my patio furniture!)

BS STARBUCKS “NAME” FUN:
• Gave my name as “Fire”. When the barista shouted my ‘name’, everyone ran away. Now I have a lot of new handbags.
• Gave my name as “Spartacus”. When the barista shouted my ‘name’, the whole place shouted: “No, I am Spartacus.” Then there was a long discussion about whose coffee it actually was.
• Gave my name as “I’m Hungry”. When the barista shouted my ‘name’, half of the customers yelled “Hi Hungry, I’m Dad!”, and the other half just rolled their eyes.
• Gave my name as “Free Coffee”. When the barista shouted my ‘name’, it all kicked off. Laptops went flying, I saw one woman get hit in the face by a pug, one person screamed ‘What about tea?’, people started shoving sugar in their pockets for no reason. Try it.
• Gave my name as “Anthropocene”. I just made up the word in the spur of the moment. As the barista screamed out my ‘name’ repeatedly, everyone was shocked. But the name seems to have stuck.
• Gave my name as “Aphrahat,” the Persian Sage. As the barista shouted “WHO?!”, I was like, “Dang, my academic specialty is so uninteresting that I can’t even participate in this thing.”
