SHOOTING THE BULL
WARNING: MAY IGNORE ALL WARNINGS:
Why do some people keep making bad choices—even when they know better? A new international study might have the answer. Researchers followed 267 people through a game designed to test how we respond to punishment. What they found? Not all brains learn from mistakes the same way. And it can’t be explained by attributing it to simple stubbornness. The researchers say that 3 distinct personality types emerged:
• Sensitive: Those who quickly change behavior after experiencing negative consequences.
• Unaware: They don’t learn from experience alone, but adjust once they’re told exactly what’s wrong.
• Compulsive: These people understand the consequences and how to avoid them – yet keep right on making the same bad choices.
The “Compulsive” group is the most puzzling: they knew what they were doing would hurt, but couldn’t stop. Researchers say this isn’t about willpower, but deep cognitive differences. And even 6 months later, most people stayed in their original category. So next time someone keeps messing up, it might not be that they don’t care – it could be that their brain just works differently.
(Ah yes, the world-famous ‘Touch the stove again’ personality’!)

“BEATING” PAIN:
So, it turns out your body has a built-in beat—and it might help ease your pain. Researchers at Montreal’s McGill University found that music played at the same tempo as your natural internal rhythm (called your “spontaneous production rate”) can actually reduce pain. Dr. Mathieu Roy, who led the study, says the idea was simple: match music to your body’s pace, and it might have a pain-relieving effect. And it worked. This could be big news for the estimated 1 in 5 people who live with chronic pain. Roy’s lab is also exploring other non-drug options, like exercise, mindset — and even distractions — because if you can believe it, playing chess might help, if you love the game! The next steps? Understanding how this all works biologically — then figuring out the best way to bring “music as medicine” to more people. In some cases, it could be as easy as starting up your favorite playlist.
(If rhythm is the cure, I’m doomed—have you seen me dance?)

JET SET RESET:
Feeling mentally drained? A new survey suggests the fix might be just one trip away. According to a poll of 2,000 Americans, most people feel about 67% better mentally after traveling. And the more often someone travels, the better their mental health tends to be. The study, a part of Talker Research’s new travel trends report, found a clear connection between mental well-being and a love for travel. People who rated their mental health as excellent were way more likely to call themselves passionate travelers — 40% said they travel multiple times a year and view it as a lifestyle. On the flip side, those with poor mental health were more likely to call travel stressful and avoid it altogether. The survey revealed that for many, travel seems to act like a reset button — helping people escape daily stress and gain fresh perspective.
(Yeah, your mood improves 67%—unless your flight’s delayed!)
(There you have it: Proof that a vacation is cheaper than therapy — unless it’s Paris!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Waze cofounder Uri Levine predicts that the next generation of kids will never learn to drive. The serial entrepreneur believes that within a decade, most paid mobility and transportation services will be autonomous. He compared the shift to driverless cars to past automations, like elevator operators. Levine, who also helped build the journey-planner app Moovit, predicts kids born today, known as Generation Beta, will never end up behind the wheel, and, “A generation after that, if you will tell them that you used to drive cars yourself, they will not believe you.” (Yet, somehow, there will still be huge lines at the DMV!)

• “Mutts Day”, honoring all dogs of mixed breeds. Purebred owners often view them as lesser in many ways — but mutt owners know better!
• “Uncommon Instruments Awareness Day”, a celebration of strange musical instruments — such as the bubble organ, fluba, and dulcimer. (***Check out some REALLY weird ones here…LINK: https://www.oddee.com/item_98118.aspx ***)
• “Cotton Candy Day”, celebrating the sweet, sugary taste-treat that melts in your mouth. It was invented in 1897 as ‘Fairy Floss’, then renamed in 1920. In Greece, Israel, and India, it is often referred to as ‘Old Woman’s Hair’. Yuck.
• “Raspberry Cake Day”, a whole day dedicated to enjoying raspberries in cake format!
• “World Ranger Day”, initiated by the 54 member associations of the International Ranger Federation, to celebrate the work rangers do to protect the world’s natural & cultural treasures. LINK: http://internationalrangers.org/world-ranger-day
• “Avocado Day”. It’s not just for delicious guacamole. Targeting insulin resistance with heart-healthy fats and fighting Alzheimer’s with its Omega 3 fatty acids, the avocado also prevents and repairs damage, thanks to its abundance of Vitamins C, E and K. (And apparently it makes a fine spread for toast, if you’re a millennial…!)
• “Jump for Jelly Beans Day”. These tiny candies evolved from an ancient confection called “Turkish delight,” which was one of the earliest forms of hard candy.
• “Chili Dog Day”. Alas, making decisions about what mouth-watering cuisine to satiate your appetite with during the sweltering summer months can be difficult. Do you want chili? Do you want hot dogs? Well, sometimes you CAN have it all…
