DIABETES ON THE COB?
If you are eating your vegetables, you figure you are doing a good thing for your health. But the long foreheads at Harvard have done a study to determine which veggies are good for you and which are only kinda-sorta good for you. Really good: kale and string beans. Eat those and you are most likely to drop weight over time. On the other side of the coin: potatoes, peas and corn. Eat a lot of those and you are more likely to gain weight. Corn was ranked the worst. They found that it has the highest glycemic load, and these vegetables can cause frequent, intense blood sugar spikes. Not only is that bad for you, but it also causes you to get hungry again faster.
(Newsflash: Technically, corn isn’t a vegetable at all. It’s a grain.)
(If I’m going to spike my blood sugar….forget corn. I’m going straight for the cake!)
BORING READ:
A new device which can partially ‘read people’s minds’ has been developed in Japan. It works by detecting and gaining information from brainwaves in people who are not able to verbally communicate. Although only partially successful at this point, researchers hope use it to read people’s thoughts and relay them to others in the ‘near future’. In tests, the machine could recognize single-digit numbers from the brains of test subjects with 90% accuracy. For single syllable words, it was correct 61% of the time. The developers hope to have an ‘easily operated’ device that works through a smartphone app within 5 years. It could ‘read the minds’ of those who have lost the ability of voice-communication, and help them regain that ability.
(Read minds? For the love of God, please don’t tell my wife about this!)
(Say goodbye to the old-fashioned lie-detector test. They don’t work anyway. I beat it every time…)
