BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Tom Hanks and Wilson reunited over the weekend! Hanks threw out the first pitch at the Cleveland Guardians’ home opener at against the San Francisco Giants on Friday, where he was joined by his very special co-star from the 2000 film “Cast Away”. On the pitcher’s mound, decked out in Guardians attire, Hanks held ‘Wilson’ over his head, showing off the volleyball and its signature red handprinted face on one side — and the Guardians’ logo on the other. After placing Wilson on the ground to throw the inaugural pitch, the ball moved around on the field — seemingly by remote control — which caused Hanks to l.o.l. He then threw a BASEball to home plate, to kick off the MLB team’s home opener.

★ Kaley Cuoco isn’t swearing off love, but the “Big Bang Theory” star is calling it quits on marriage. Cuoco, who has been divorced twice, told Glamour magazine that she still believes in love because she has had “incredible relationships”, but she “will never get married again” and “You can literally put that on the cover.” While she didn’t go into specifics on past relationships, Cuoco admitted that she is married to her career, first and foremost. She was first married to tennis pro Ryan Sweeting, then to equestrian Karl Cook. She and Cook announced their split in September after 3 years of marriage.

★ Keifer Sutherland is holding out hope for another run at the “24” franchise. The drama ran from 2001-10, plus a brief revival in 2014, but in a new interview with GQ, he said that Jack Bauer’s story is isn’t over. Of the series that made him a household name, Sutherland said: “I have learned that you’re just better off not to be definitive about your answer of whether you will do something or not do something. I love playing that character. I do believe the story is unresolved.” He indicated that if the right script came along, he’d be behind it, “even if my participation in that were to be limited.”

★ Liz Sheridan, a veteran stage and screen actress who was perfectly cast as Jerry Seinfeld’s mother ‘Helen’ on “Seinfeld,” died Friday at 93. A trained dancer, Sheridan appeared in several Broadway productions, including the Meryl Streep-starring musical “Happy End” in 1977. Though she had dozens of film credits, she was best known as Seinfeld’s doting mother on his titular sitcom, which ran for 9 seasons. She also appeared as the snoopy neighbor on the alien-led sitcom “ALF.” Sheridan’s passing came within 2 weeks of the death of fellow “Seinfeld” cast member Estelle Harris, who played George Costanza’s mother.

SHOOTING THE BULL

NOW, THERE’S TRULY AN APP FOR EVERYTHING:
With the return of concert season, Tinder has teamed up with live event producers to create “Festival mode”, designed to help people find new concert buddies. Tinder says their new “Festival Mode bridges the gap between online introductions and IRL connections by allowing Tinder members to find fellow festival goers before the show.” Live in Tinder Explore, Festival Mode invites users to select which events they plan to visit this year. They can then match with other attendees in the dating app as early as one month before the show. A separate “Festival Goers” space, meanwhile, is open to those who simply want to connect with other fans of the culture. Tinder stats show more than 60% of singles report having become friends (“or more”) with people they met at a music festival or concert.
(Well, of course! There’s nothing like bonding over shared interests, like scorching temperatures, insect bites, exorbitantly expensive beer, lack of toilet facilities, and overzealous security personnel…)
(My problem has never been finding someone to go to a festival with. The problem is always finding them when it’s over!)

CORONAUPDATE:
➠ Pfizer could have an Omicron-optimized vaccine ready by fall. The company plans to finish work on a new version of its Covid-19 vaccine that can better protect against the omicron variant while still being effective against other known strains of the virus. Pfizer is also working to extend the effectiveness of its Covid-19 vaccine to a year, compared to current shots that have been shown to wane after about 6 months. (Which is actually a pretty long time, compared to another Pfizer product, which I may or may not know anything about…!)
➠ The US Food and Drug Administration has granted emergency use authorization to the first Covid-19 breath test. The InspectIR Covid-19 Breathalyzer, which is about the size of a piece of carry-on luggage, can be used in medical offices and mobile testing sites. The system separates and identifies chemical mixtures to detect 5 compounds associated with coronavirus infection.  It can give results in less than 3 minutes. (And if you’re infected more than once, they’ll make you get one hooked up to your car ignition!)

NEW GOOD NEWS:
➢ A big thumbs-up to Egyptian swimmer Omar Hegazy, who just broke 2 (!!) Guinness World Records, 7 years after losing his leg in a car accident. The 31-year-old set new marks for “longest distance swam underwater with one breath” (185’ 4”) and “longest distance swam underwater with one breath with fins” (251 ft.). Just as impressive, he admits he first got into swimming because he was very angry at losing his leg. Quote: “I found a way to I let out my anger and frustration, but it was also where I felt really free and capable.” Now, Hegazy is a motivational speaker and has achieved several other athletic milestones, including a 700 km cycling challenge.
➢ When it was time to choose her daughter’s godparents, Kitana Garrett knew just who to ask: the first responders who saved her baby’s life. On Oct. 5, at just 25 weeks pregnant, Garrett went into labor while alone at her home in Columbia TN. She called 911, and Cody Hill, a firefighter, and paramedic Jamie Roan soon arrived. Baby Za’myla Camilla Miracle Garrett spent 4 months in ICU, and doctors say the quick actions of Hill and Roan are what saved her life. The first responders kept track of Za’myla’s progress, and in March, they were surprised to be asked if they’d be her godparents. Quote from Mom Kitana: “They didn’t give up, so I feel like they will continue to do that later on in life [for Za’Myla].”

THE WORLD’S TOP CITY DESTINATIONS:
…according to Euromonitor, which, in its new 2021 Top 100 City Destination Index, compares the attractiveness of 100 cities worldwide using criteria including traditional tourist attractions, plus sustainability and health & safety metrics in the era of COVID-19:
1. Paris, France: It was, however ranked low for health & safety
2. Dubai, UAE:  With a 98% vaccination rate, it was ranked very high for health & safety
3. Amsterdam, Netherlands: Has put in place a system called ‘Public Eye’, which uses AI technology to help navigate large flows of people and reduce congestion
4. Madrid, Spain: #1 worldwide in the “sustainability” category
5. Rome, Italy: New, simplified COVID border regulations came into effect in Italy last month
6. Berlin, Germany: Up 2 places in 2021
7. New York, USA: Received a big boost from domestic tourism
8. London, England: ranked highest worldwide for tourism infrastructure (thanks to the double-decker buses?)
9. Munich, Germany: Up 9 places this year
10. Barcelona, Spain: Climbed 6 places from 2020
(You’d think they’d throw in at least ONE city that I could imagine ALMOST being able to afford visiting…)

DID YOU KNOW?
The Texas Rangers knew they were adding one of MLB’s most feared hitters when they signed Corey Seager to a $325 million contract. And it seems the LA Angels agree. With the bases loaded and one out in the 4th inning on Friday, the Angels chose to protect a 4-2 lead by intentionally walking the Rangers’ star shortstop. WITH THE BASES LOADED. How rare is an intentional walk with the bases loaded? It’s happened exactly 3 times since 1950. Questionable decision or not, it worked out for the Angels, who went on to win 9-6.

• “Newspaper Columnists Day”, initiated in 1995 by the National Society of Newspaper Columnists to increase awareness of the importance and contribution made by columnists and journalists worldwide. (Without whom, talk radio wouldn’t know where to go to find employees!)
• “National Animal Crackers Day”, bringing us back to our childhood and the many boxes of Animal Crackers we shared with our friends. Animal Crackers are a type of small cookie baked in the shape of circus or zoo animals, like lions, tigers, bears, and elephants. (But are they vegan-friendly?)
• “Pet Owners Independence Day” If you are a pet owner, today you can celebrate yourself! How? You should take the day off work and send your pet in your place. Then enjoy life from the perspective of your furry friend by sleeping and eating all day long. (Ah! So just like what I did yesterday!)
• “World Amateur Radio Day”, honoring the worldwide hobby of ‘ham radio’. It’s observed on the anniversary of the 1925 founding of the International Amateur Radio Union. (Amateur? Radio? Are you pointing at me?)
• “World Heritage Day”, also known as “International Monuments and Sites Day”, to increase awareness of the importance of the diversity of cultural heritage, and preserving it for generations in the future.
• “Piñata Day”, While the tradition of the piñata is typically thought of as originating in Mexico, its origins actually go back to the 14th century. It was brought to Mexico by the Spanish conquistadors. Today, we celebrate “the ultimate party prop” by making or buying one and then having a good whack at it with a stick.
