BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Tesla founder Elon Musk has purchased a 9.2% stake in Twitter to become the company’s biggest shareholder, according to a filing with the Securities Exchange Commission. The move was announced about a week after Musk criticized the social media platform for “failing to adhere to free speech principles” and asked, “Is a new platform needed?” Musk’s stake is worth nearly $2.9 billion. In the wake of the news, the company’s share price surged 25% in pre-market trading on Monday. Musk is an enthusiastic Twitter user, with more than 80 million followers.

★ Mia Goth and Shia LaBeouf are now mom and dad. It appears Goth gave birth to her first child with her on-and-off partner, according to new photos of the 2 stars walking with Goth pushing a baby stroller. News of the birth comes 2 months after the new mom was spotted in Pasadena with a visible baby bump, confirming she was expecting. At the time, neither Goth or LaBeouf’s reps would comment on the pregnancy.

★ Jim Carrey took a break from roasting Hollywood to announce some “fairly serious” news. According to him, he’s retiring from acting for the foreseeable future. Carrey said to Access Hollywood, quote: “Well, I’m retiring…Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious.” The comedian is promoting “Sonic the Hedgehog 2”, his first film in 2 years — and he has nothing lined up next. Carrey says he hasn’t ruled out some kind of return to film or TV later on, but it would have to be a great project.

SHOOTING THE BULL
SAVING RELATIONSHIPS:
Couples with joint bank accounts last longer, according to Cornell researchers. Couples who pooled their money demonstrated more positive indicators of clear communication than those who didn’t, according to lead author Emily Garbinsky. The study showed that the word choices of these couples alone indicated a high level of mutual satisfaction. They tended to use more “we,” “us” and “our,” as opposed to “I,” “me” and “my.” Terms associated with joint affiliation also came up more often, such as “agree,” “connect,” “friend,” “kindness,” “listen” and “peace.” Garbinsky says that when a couple decides to pool its financial resources, it increases one’s level of dependence on their partner, and helps to align the couple’s financial interests and goals, both of which are associated with “high levels of relationship quality”.
(Which is great. As long as a nasty Amazon habit doesn’t get in the way…)
(Plus, you’ll save on banking fees!)

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
⇒ Eating avocados reduces the risk of heart attacks in both men and women, including when eaten in place of butter, cheese or processed meats, according to a new study. Researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston found that eating at least 2 servings of avocado a week reduced the risk of heart attack by 21% compared to avoiding or rarely eating avocados. They also determined that consuming half a serving of avocado (¼ cup) a day instead of the same amount of eggs, yogurt, cheese, margarine, butter or processed meats (such as bacon) lowered the risk of heart attacks by 16% to 22%. (Awesome. The only problem is that you have to eat avocados . . . instead of bacon!)
⇒ Makeup that smells like coffee and donuts? Why not? Beauty brand e.l.f. Cosmetics is launching a makeup collection inspired by Dunkin’. The e.l.f. X Dunkin’ collab features items with names inspired by Dunkin’s menu, including: Dunkin’ Dozen scented eyeshadow palette, with its colors of shimmery pink, blue, yellow and chocolate brown, 2 “Glazed for Days” lip glosses, a coffee-scented lip scrub, and makeup brushes shaped like straws. There’s also a makeup sponge that looks like a strawberry-frosted donut with confetti sprinkles. Even the packaging is on-brand, making it look like you’re taking home a box of donuts, rather than lip glosses and eyeshadows. The collection launches Thursday. (I guess they can’t use the slogan “America’s makeup runs – on Dunkin’”?)

“PLANTING” A VACATION?
A hotel in Kentucky is offering tourists the chance to bring along their houseplants to the “World’s First Plant-Friendly Hotel experience.” The local convention and visitors bureau of Lexington teamed up with Elwood Hotel & Suites to offer special amenities to guests traveling with their houseplants in tow. The event, kicking off on Friday, will offer “The Gardener’s Premier Corner Room Package” for 6 king suites “specially chosen for their abundance of plant friendly natural light.” The package also includes greenery, a complimentary potted succulent, botanical toiletries and a “tea” for plants served in a pink mug. Guests can also partake in “plant-centric perks” including a Garden Mojito cocktail special made with blackberry syrup, fresh herbs and edible flowers at the downstairs Fiddletree Kitchen & Bar. Why the fuss for houseplants? The visitors bureau says: “Thanks to a years-long pandemic and the rising costs of parenthood, pets are the new babies. And plants have been promoted to the new pets.”
(How did they NOT name this the “Vegetation Vacation”?)
(I suppose the other great thing about this is that you don’t have to ask someone to water your plants for you while you’re away…)

IT’S A DUDE THING:
You might know that ‘G.I. Joe’ was called an “action figure” because Hasbro knew that parents probably wouldn’t buy a doll for their sons. Other products given the “man” treatment . . .
➠ Yogurt: The makers of Powerful Yogurt made the claim that their Greek Yogurt was packed with protein, and would help tone men’s abs. The packages were black with pics of a bull on them. (They had a point … ever seen a dude in a yogurt commercial?)
➠ Diet Soda: Research showed that the word “diet” was seen as feminine, so companies came up with creative ways to pitch low-cal soda to guys. Think Coke Zero (in a black can), Pepsi Max, and Dr Pepper 10 (“with just 10 manly calories”).
➠ Spanx: When they came up with products for men, they came up with an upper-body undergarment and called it a “compression shirt”.
➠ Yoga: A company in Boston started a fitness trend called “broga”, which was the same as the yoga that’s been around for thousands of years, plus squat thrusts and push ups (and beer?).
➠ Shower Accessories: To get men to buy bath products, Axe came up with the “Detailer Shower Tool” set, a black plastic ring that looked like a truck tire. One side had a red sponge for sensitive areas, and the other had a piece of black nylon mesh for “extra dirty parts”. (The guys used it to scrub their minds…)

DID YOU KNOW?
Scientists in South Korea have come up with new technology that will cut the time it takes to charge electric cars to just 9 seconds, allowing EV owners to ‘fill up’ faster than their gasoline counterparts. And even those plugging-in at home will have their recharging time slashed from 10 hours to 3 minutes. The new device uses the laws of quantum physics to power all of a battery’s cells at once, instead of one at a time — so recharging at worst takes no longer than filling up with gas at the pump. (Yet, still, my kid will return the car on “empty” every time!)

TODAY’S BS REASONS TO PARTY . . .
• “Dandelion Day”, Today, we celebrate the benefits and beauty of this perennial plant many consider a weed. Its name comes from the French “dent de lion,” meaning “lion’s tooth”, a reference to its leaves’ jagged tooth-like edges. Dandelions are high in Vitamins A, B, C and D, and were used by Native North Americans for kidney disease, swelling and skin problems.
• “Deep Dish Pizza Day”, celebrating the creation of Chicago’s Uno Chicago Grill, which opened in 1943. Why deep dish? Because you can’t possibly get enough fat-laden cheese and sausage onto a regular pie to cause a proper cardiac arrest.
• “Go For Broke Day”, a day to throw caution to the wind and go all out, give it all you’ve got, don’t hold back, give it all or nothing, start giving 110%, let ’er rip, balls to the wall! (Now I need a nap…)
• “Road Map Day”, to promote map reading as an ‘enjoyable pastime’ and survival skill. (A friend of mine always helps me out with maps and diagrams, pointing out all the little symbols and what they mean. The guy is a legend!)
• “Bell Bottoms Day”, you’ll notice this is NOT held in conjunction with “Ride Your Bike Day”.
• “Caramel Day”, made with butter, brown and white sugar, milk or cream, and vanilla, it is usually enjoyed as an ice cream topping, a candy filling, or on its own.
