★ With almost every successful TV series you can think of from the last 50 years getting a reboot, you have to wonder how it is that we’ve never seen a good, new “Flintstones” series. Well, wonder no more. Elizabeth Banks has signed on to star in and executive produce “Bedrock”, an animated series set 20 years after the events of the original. In the show, ‘Fred Flintstone’ is on the brink of retirement, and 20-something ‘Pebbles’ is embarking on her own career. As the Stone Age gives way to a shiny and enlightened new Bronze Age, the residents of Bedrock will find evolution harder than a swing from Bamm-Bamm’s club. Banks will voice adult Pebbles Flintstone.

★ Casey Hammer, granddaughter of Armand Hammer and aunt of Armie Hammer, is set to reveal the family’s secrets in a limited documentary series. She has signed a deal to tell the inside story of the rise and fall of the notorious Hammer family, including its latest unfolding chapter. It comes after Vanity Fair published an in-depth expose of the Hammer family and Armie had to step away from a number of projects including the Paramount+ ‘The Godfather’ series “The Offer”, the Watergate drama “Gaslit” and the Jennifer Lopez feature “Shotgun Wedding”, as a result of his recent revelations. The series is currently being shopped to broadcasters and streamers.

★ Carrie Ann Inaba is bidding a temporary farewell to “The Talk”. Inaba, who joined the show’s hosting panel in 2019, has announced that she is taking a leave of absence from the CBS daytime show. In videos tweeted on Monday, she told fans that she plans to use the time to focus on her well-being, saying that “Health is the most important thing.” While Inaba didn’t disclose any more details behind her decision, she has previously opened up about her various health struggles, including being diagnosed with the autoimmune diseases Sjögren’s Syndrome and Lupus.

★ The brains behind the blockbuster documentary “Framing Britney Spears” are now working on a film revolving around Janet Jackson’s ‘Nipplegate’ incident during the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show. That’s when she shocked viewers and upset NFL bosses and sponsors when her breast was bared during an explosive performance with Spears’ ex-boyfriend, Justin Timberlake. It’s still not clear who is to blame for the eye-popping moment, and the new film aims to explore the drama and the fall-out. (No release date has been…um…revealed…)

• Billie Eilish — After dropping a video on Monday showing her new blonde look, she announced on Tuesday that she’ll drop a new song this morning, and release her 2nd full-length album, “Happier Than Ever,” on July 30. Billboards reading “album out July 30” had already begun popping up in various cities.
• Mac Miller – His estate has announced the release of “The Book of Mac: Remembering Mac Miller” on Oct. 26. The late rapper’s life, career and legacy is documented in the 320-page book by author and longtime fan Donna-Claire Chesman.
• Lorde – has reactivated her “onion rings review” page after 5 months. Yes, she runs an onion review page on Instagram, and her 52,000 followers are very pleased that it’s back. • Iron Maiden — frontman Bruce Dickinson is going on a spoken word tour. He’ll travel the UK for 6 speaking stops in August in a tour titled ‘An Evening with Bruce Dickinson’, in which he’ll deliver a “cornucopia of fascinating tales and derring-do exploits”.
• The Rolling Stones — have launched their SS21 fashion collection, a range of surfer-style pieces emblazoned with their signature tongue and lips logo. Fans can get their hands on a tie-dye yellow and green top and a blue hoodie from the RS No.9 Carnaby collection. RS No. 9 Carnaby first opened its doors at 9 Carnaby Street in Soho in September.
• Jimmy Buffet – Some Parrot Heads, who paid more than $10,000 for a pod of 4 seats to his tour kick-off on May 13 in Delray Beach, Florida, are steaming because of a rule that says to get in, your I.D. must match the name provided at the time of purchase, and tickets are non-transferable. That means those who bought theirs through a reseller are out of luck.
• Tenille Arts – Her hit ‘Somebody Like That’ has become the first country #1 hit sung by a woman, that was also written and produced by women. The song, written by Arts, Alex Kline, and Allison Veltz Cruz, and produced by Kline, currently sits atop the Mediabase/Country Aircheck chart. It is also the first #1 by a Canadian-born country artist since Emerson Drive’s ‘Moments’ in 2007.
• Rascal Flatts – Jay DeMarcus says the pandemic may have changed the trio’s decision to go their separate ways. The group was forced to cancel their planned final tour last year, and now he says “I think all of us are at this place right now where (when they are able to hit the road), it might not even be a farewell tour.”
• Marty Stuart – has served up a cover of birthday-boy Willie Nelson’s ‘One In A Row’, the second single off “Songs I Sing In The Dark,” a collection of 20 songs recorded acoustically at Stuart’s former home outside of Nashville. LINK: https://youtu.be/ZEkT1xJgM8I

JOLTIN’ JOE:
Yes, a good hit of java in the morning definitely can give you a quick boost. And a new study says that grabbing a second and third cup may be good for your brain. Researchers in Portugal say those who regularly drink coffee are not only more alert, but also have a better memory. Researchers from the University of Minho found that consuming 3-5 cups of coffee per day can make coffee drinkers more focused while also displaying more brain activity, and greater memory and learning abilities. In an examination of MRI scans, scientists discovered differences in the makeup of the brains between regular coffee drinkers and those who don’t consume the beverage. Coffee drinkers had a more “efficient” brain, as shown by quicker connectivity between parts of the brain. This means regularly drinking coffee may give people better motor control. Participants consuming caffeine were also less likely to let their minds wander. Study authors add the effects of a brain boost from coffee can be immediate, and non-coffee drinkers could start seeing benefits from a single cup of java.

THE TRUTH COMES OUT IN THE WASH:
Ever since the beginning of the pandemic, it’s been drilled into our heads: Wash your hands. Often. Scrub for a full 20 seconds, the time it takes to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ twice. Repeat whenever possible. But it seems these days, handwashing has fallen to pre-Covid levels. While last June, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found Americans said they were lathering up twice as often as they did in 2019, a survey done in January found only 57% were washing their hands 6 or more times a day. That’s a big drop from the 78% of people who said they were washing hands frequently early in the pandemic. And in April 2020, only 27% admitted to just rinsing their hands after using a public bathroom, rather than using soap. In January of this year, it was up to 48%. Among those who study things like this, these people are known as “rinse and runs”.
(I’ll admit it. I’m NOT washing my hands as much these days. But it’s mostly because I am SO SICK OF THAT INFERNAL SONG!!)
(I’m just glad that when they compile data like this, it’s done by means of a survey, rather than putting some creepy dude in the bathroom to watch!)
(It’s not the first time the word “runs” has been applied to someone’s bathroom behavior!)

With quarantine mandates and less funding, a team from the Institute of Cancer Research in London believe some cancer breakthroughs are now two years behind where they would have been if procedures weren’t interrupted by the pandemic. One problem is that with social distancing rules, researchers have had to limit the number of people who can occupy laboratories. Professor Paul Workman of London’s Institute of Cancer Research calls the coronavirus pandemic “the greatest threat to cancer research in generations.”
