We’ve Gone Bullistic!

BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:

★ Jonathan Majors has been sentenced to one year of domestic violence counseling after being convicted last year of assaulting and harassing his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. His sentencing was delivered Monday in a Manhattan courtroom. Majors was arrested in March 2023 after he assaulted Jabbari in the backseat of a private vehicle. Majors denied that he assaulted Jabbari. He did not testify, but his defense team has repeatedly alleged that Jabbari, not Majors, was the aggressor in the vehicle that night.

★ Tori Spelling says her estranged husband Dean McDermott said something to her so personal last year that it completely torpedoed their marriage. She got into it on the latest episode of her podcast, saying that last June, the couple were on their way home from a shoot she’d been doing with Jennie Garth, and McDermott said something to her that crossed the line. Spelling never detailed what it was, but said she reacted by throwing a potato on the ground and letting out a guttural scream she described as “beast-like”. After that, she said she locked herself in her bedroom, and eventually McDermott made his way in through a side entrance and told her he wanted a divorce, which she was OK with.

★ Worldwide box office is headed for a marginal decline of 3% in 2024, a setback that follows 3 years of recovery from a pandemic era low in 2020. Gower Street Analytics forecasts that worldwide box office this year will total $32.3 billion, down by more than $1 billion from the $33.9 billion earned in 2023. After taking exchange rates into consideration, that’s 18% lower than an average of the last 3 pre-pandemic years (2017-2019). The forecast came on the eve of CinemaCon, the annual National Association of Theater Owners convention, on now in Las Vegas.

★ Molly Ringwald believes “The Breakfast Club” “hasn’t aged well”. The 56-year-old actress portrayed ‘Claire’, who was nicknamed ‘Princess’, in the 1985 classic film – which followed 5 very different students in weekend detention. She told The Sunday Times newspaper that she recently rewatched it WITH HER 21-year-old daughter, and quote: “There is a lot that I really love about the movie but there are elements that haven’t aged well — like Judd Nelson’s character, ‘John Bender’, who essentially sexually harasses my character.” Ringwald says she’s glad “things are truly different now.”

★ “That ’90s Show” is bringing back a beloved “That ’70s Show” character for Season 2. The status of the original cast’s involvement in the Netflix sequel sitcom has always been in flux, but a new photo of Laura Prepon on-set indicates that she remains involved. She shared an Instagram photo while working on That ’90s Show Season 2, captioning the image: “Kiddos visiting me at work! It was so meaningful to show them the set where I got my start as an actor when I was a kid, and where I’m currently directing today.” Prepon played ‘Donna Pinciotti’ on That ’70s Show, and reprises the role for That ’90s Show. BS MUSIC NOTES:
• Taylor Swift – as you know, she considers 13 her lucky number. So, it’s no surprise that on Saturday, 13 days before her new “The Tortured Poets Department” album drops, she started a countdown. In her Instagram Story, she shared a black-and-white clip featuring a typewriter writing the words “13 days until the TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT” along with a pre-order link.
• Cardi B — is celebrating the 6th anniversary of her debut album “Invasion of Privacy” – and teased what’s next. On X, she wrote: “6 years ago I released my first album and it broke so many records GAH LEE!! 6 years later I’m preparing to drop the next one this year.. it’s so different from what everyone is expecting and I’m sooo excited.” She dropped the single ‘Enough (Miami)’ last month.
• Axl Rose – sings on an upcoming charity song also featuring Elton John, and a bevy of other stars. The Who drummer Zak Starkey posted that he and GNR bassist Duff McKagan “cut bass for a cover of t.rex children of the revolution”. Later, his dad (Ringo Starr) added drums and Slash played guitar, before “Axl killed it – amazing vocals”. There are plans for an entire album. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/566hhw2p
• INXS — A never-before-heard Michael Hutchence solo single ‘One Way’ has just been released, put together by friend and producer/musician Danny Saber, he said it is “the culmination of nearly 2 decades of work” on unreleased material, including demos and song ideas that were discovered in a locker in London in 2006. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/43fy4acz
• FireHouse – Founding singer CJ Snare died Friday night at age 64 after a battle with colon cancer. He co-wrote all 3 of the band’s top 20 hits: 1991’s ‘Don’t Treat Me Bad’ and ‘Love of a Lifetime’, and 1992’s ‘When I Look Into Your Eyes’. He had been expected to return to live performances this summer, following surgery last year.
• Beyoncé – Her version of Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’ has debuted at #56 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart. It’s the second song from her new album “Cowboy Carter” to make the list. ‘Texas Hold ’Em’ is currently at #37.
• Parker McCollum – has scored his 3rd #1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart. ‘Burn It Down’ moved from #6 to the top in its 44th week on the chart. It’s the second single from McCollum’s album “Never Enough”, following ‘Handle on You’, which hit #2 last May.
• Morgan Wallen — is facing charges after he was arrested at a Nashville bar Sunday night. He was taken into custody after he allegedly threw a chair from the rooftop of Eric Church’s Chief’s Bar on Broadway, just missing 2 cops standing below. He was released Monday morning after bond was set at $15,520. He is set to appear in court on May 3.

SHOOTING THE BULL

FAUX-PANTS:
Almost everyone wears jeans. But, as it turns out, maybe we shouldn’t – especially that newer “fast-fashion” type. Fast fashion jeans differ from traditional jeans in their quick disposal. Their low quality and emphasis on fleeting trends lead to them being worn only a few times before being tossed. And recent research from Guangdong University of Technology in China found that wearing a pair of fast-fashion jeans just once creates a whopping 2.5kg of carbon emissions. That means environmental wear-and-tear of the pants is equivalent to driving 6.4 miles (10.3km) in an average car. The researchers noted that “Jeans production and transportation contributed 91% of the carbon footprint of fast fashion consumption.” Traditional fashion — typically more expensive clothing made using high-quality materials and with environmental sustainability in mind — emits around one-eleventh the pollution that fast fashion apparel does, when all factors are accounted for.
(Well, no one ever called them “green jeans”…!)
(Fortunately, with all the rips and holes these days, there is a lot less jean material needed…said the guy who just gave away his age!)

BIG FISH STORIES:
⇒ When a truck carrying over 100,000 salmon crashed in Oregon, it could have spelled disaster for the fish, which were intended to replenish local populations. But in a miraculous twist of fortune, over 70,000 of the fish landed in a nearby creek and are expected to survive. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife says the truck was carrying spring Chinook smolts, or young salmon, in the life phase in which they transition from freshwater to the open ocean. The accident occurred on a sharp corner, with the truck rolling, then skidding on its side, and going over a rocky embankment. But in a fortunate coincidence, the truck overturned close to Lookingglass Creek, a tributary of the Grande Ronde River. Around 77,000 young salmon made it into the creek — and are expected to make their way to the ocean, and return in future years to spawn. The driver sustained minor injuries. (And is NOT expected to make his way to the ocean!)
⇒ The world’s oldest man says the secret to his long life is luck, moderation — and fish and chips every Friday. Englishman John Alfred Tinniswood, who is 111, was confirmed as the new holder of the title by Guinness, following the death this month of the previous title holder at 114. Tinniswood, a retired accountant, said he never smokes, rarely drinks and follows no special diet, apart from a fish and chip supper once a week. (I hate to say it, but stay tuned for updates…)

KARMA INSURANCE:
Do you believe in karma? That what goes around, comes around? If so, you’re far from alone. A new survey found that 84% of us agree: What you put out into the world comes back to you. According to the OnePoll survey of 2,000 adults in the US, this belief in good deeds being rewarded seems contagious. Another 84% say they actively try to “pay it forward” with acts of kindness whenever they can. Here’s the thing, though: The survey also found that bad karma may be a thing, too. Respondents attributed bad relationships (34%), losing something (27%), and arguments with others (27%) to these bad vibes. Back to the positives: The most commonly-reported ways of paying it forward” include: treating loved ones to something special, giving generous tips, and helping a neighbor with tasks such as carrying their groceries or helping them shovel snow.  People also said that good karma comes from donating money, volunteering time to help out friends and family, and supporting small or locally owned businesses. The average person claimed they engage in 5 generous acts per week.
(Sorry, [***co-host***], simply gracing us with your presence each morning doesn’t count!)
(I’m so fortunate that my local liquor store is “locally owned”. I think I’ll pick up myself some good karma on the way home today!)

DID YOU KNOW?
Urban legend has it that birth rates increase 9 months after a big championship win that unites the fandom of a city or country. But an investigation by The Athletic found that this isn’t the rule; it’s the exception. For example, Wrexham FC claimed in a recent ad to have caused a 24% spike in births 9 months after a huge win that secured their promotion to a higher league — but the local hospital didn’t report any more babies than usual. Other research has found many instances of lower birth rates 9 months after big sports wins, possibly because of all the communal celebrations, which could cut into intimacy time.

• “Name Yourself Day”, a day for anybody with a name they hate, to tag themselves with a brand-new label. (‘Clem’, perhaps?)
• “Be Kind to Lawyers Day”, to show appreciation to those who make it their responsibility to handle our (and the nation’s) legal matters. Today, ensure that the lawyers in your life know how much you appreciate their tireless efforts. (By NOT telling a lawyer joke?)

• “Chinese Almond Cookie Day”. In some Chinese restaurants, they are served to cleanse the palate after several courses, rather than being regarded as a dessert.
• “Winston Churchill Day”. This date in 1963, Winston Churchill was made an honorary citizen of the United States. He is well-known for his leadership as Prime Minister of the UK during World War II. Quote: “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.”
• “Gin and Tonic Day”. As a staple among the list of amazing cocktails out there, gin and tonics have a high bitterness factor, but it is tempered with lime and sugar to make it palatable for most people. (If at first you don’t succeed, try, try a gin…)
• “Unicorn Day”, celebrating the mythological animals that look like horses with horns on their foreheads. Although observed all around the world, it has special significance in Scotland, where the unicorn is the national animal. (So, not only do they believe in the Loch Ness monster…)
