BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:
★ Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are getting married! Lopez shared the news of their engagement in a video clip published in her personal fan newsletter “On the J.Lo”. It shows her beaming as she shows off her ring — an emerald cut, pale green diamond. She also shared a teaser of the clip on her social media pages, writing: “Major announcement!!!!” The news comes a year after the pair publicly rekindled the romance after almost two decades apart. ★ Will Smith has publicly reacted after the Academy issued him a 10-year ban from all its events for slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars. Friday, the Academy announced he will “not be permitted to attend any events or programs, in person or virtually,” including future Academy Awards, as disciplinary action for the altercation. The organization said their ruling “is a step toward a larger goal of protecting the safety of our performers and guests, and restoring trust in the Academy.” In response, Smith shared a statement saying: “I accept and respect the Academy’s decision.” News of the ban came a week after the 53-year-old resigned from the Academy.

★ The economics of TV can be somewhat murky. While it’s known that top stars like Ellen or Judge Judy can make $20 or 30 or even 50 million per year, what about the other hosts? Dr. Oz’s run for a U.S. Senate seat is shining some light on exactly that. His financial disclosure form reveals that Oz’s salary for his show was a more modest, but still lucrative, at $2 million per year. But that’s just small piece of the pie. He was also paid almost $200K for his role as a producer on the program. Add to that the fact that he owned a portion of his talk show, with that stake mixed with his other businesses, trademarks, websites and media assets, his compensation from the show was about $10 million. His companies also made tens of millions from investments, bringing his net worth to somewhere between $100-500 million, according to the filing. One more thing – for his 2-week stint as “Jeopardy!” guest host last spring, Dr. Oz was paid more than $268,000, but that money went to an unnamed charity.

★ Jussie Smollett is back to work fresh off his release from prison. The former “Empire” star released a new single on Friday called ‘Thank You God’ where he references his court case over faking his own attack and lying to police about it. Sample lyrics: “Just remember this … this ain’t that situation. You think I’m stupid enough to kill my reputation? It’s like they’re hell-bent on not solving the crime.” Profits from the song will be donated to the Rainbow Push Coalition, Secure the Bag Safety and the Illinois Innocence Project. SHOOTING THE BULL
THINGS WE LOSE SLEEP OVER:
What’s the most common reason for not getting a good night’s sleep (besides Monday morning!)? The biggest causes of a restless sleep include feeling stressed, fretting over finances, and the temperature not being right. A study of 2,000 adults found that 38% suffer from poor sleep because of an uncomfortable mattress, and 36% complain of their partner’s snoring. Sleep can also be disturbed by traffic noise, light coming through the window and caffeinated drinks before bedtime. Mobile phones are also a culprit, with social media blamed by 14%, video games by 12% and reading on devices by 13%. 18% said their sleep patterns have worsened since the start of the pandemic, perhaps due to feeling more worried or anxious. But about that many people also said their quality of sleep has improved, possibly because they invest more time in their bedtime routine, or because they are now able to sleep later, thanks to working from home.
(I’ll tell you what ruins my sleep . . . MY ALARM!)
(What? No one blamed their kids? That’s sort of the go-to at my place!)

MORE THAN MEATS THE EYE:
➠ Wildtype, a California-based startup is creating sushi-grade salmon by cultivating cells extracted from salmon eggs. The cells grow in steel vessels, spreading over a plant-based mesh to form fibrous tissue. The process is faster than aquaculture and produces no waste since only the edible parts are grown. There’s a long way to go before this futuristic food becomes common, but it’s a hopeful prospect for fish populations and eco-minded sushi lovers alike. Salmon is the world’s largest single fish commodity by value, but overfishing has slashed the salmon population.
➠ Food technology company Primeval Foods plans to launch an entire menagerie of exotic meats that didn’t actually come from animals, including lion burgers, tiger nuggets or giraffe ham. As food companies continue to come up with ingenious ways of capitalizing on the growing meat-alternatives market, the London-based startup has announced plans to sell exotic meats cultivated in a laboratory. No animals are hurt in the process of growing lion, tiger, or even elephant meats in a laboratory, as they are actually grown from cultured cells. (And your kid might finally eat something besides chicken nuggets!

NEW GOOD NEWS:
➢ A team of Stanford engineers have developed a solar cell that can generate electricity at night. The research comes at a time when the number of solar jobs and residential installations are rising. While standard solar panels can provide electricity during the day, this device can serve as a “continuous renewable power source for both day- and nighttime,” according to the study. The device incorporates a thermoelectric generator, which can pull electricity from the small difference in temperature between the ambient air and the solar cell itself. While it definitely doesn’t create as much electricity as during a sunny day, the researchers said it can “provide nighttime standby lighting and power in off-grid and mini-grid applications, where [solar] cell installations are gaining popularity.” (Do they mean ‘grow-ops’?)
➢ A man who won a $217 million lottery jackpot has decided to spend nearly all of it to help save the planet. The winner, nicknamed “Guy” by the French lottery group Françaises des Jeux, won the sum in December 2020. At the time, the jackpot was the largest in the history of EuroMillions, a lottery involving several European countries including France and the UK. He says he is putting the bulk of his winnings toward “Anyama”, a nature foundation he created. Why? “The priority today is saving the planet. We must act. It is an absolute emergency.”

THINGS PEOPLE LEARNED A BIT LATE:
Ever been just a little late in learning or picking up on something? And been left totally bamboozled, thinking, “how have I been alive this long without realizing this???” Here are some true confessions from a recent Reddit thread . . .
☞ “I was almost 40 when I learned I am allergic to bananas. I thought everyone’s mouth got itchy when they ate them.”
☞ “That ponies are NOT baby horses; they’re a breed of horse.”
☞ “That sodas are called ‘soft drinks’ because they have no ‘hard’ alcohol.”
☞ “That baby carrots are just shaved down big carrots. I was devastated a few years ago.”
☞ “That the saying is ‘for all intents and purposes’ and not ‘for all intensive purposes.’”
☞ “I thought the ‘D’ is Disney was just some random symbol, kinda like a backward G. It took me until seventh grade to realize it’s a ‘D.'”
☞ “That Washington state and Washington, DC are two different places.”
☞ “That ‘rotating tires’ doesn’t mean spinning them around in place like you’re in a Fast and the Furious movie. It means you swap each of their positions on the car.”

DID YOU KNOW?
A movie that was filmed in 2015 won’t be released until 2115. “100 Years”, with the tagline ‘The Movie You Will Never See’ stars John Malkovich, and is directed by “From Dusk Till Dawn’s” Robert Rodriguez. The short film imagines Earth 100 years in the future. And why, exactly, won’t it be released until 2115? Because it’s a promotion for Louis XIII Cognac — which also takes 100 years to properly age before it’s sold. Three teasers have been released, each showing a different vision of 2115.
