BS SHOW BIZ BUZZ:

★ Sydney Sweeney and Jonathan Davino have been living separate lives for a few months, TMZ has reported. The outlet quotes a source as saying that the couple are not together romantically and haven’t been since January, when they separated. They were last photographed together on Jan. 20, and it was reported in early February that they postponed their May wedding. She recently deleted a photo of herself kissing Davino from her Instagram, and was a solo guest at her “Anyone But You” co-star Glen Powell’s sister’s wedding on Sunday. Sweeney and Davino got engaged in 2022 after first sparking dating rumors in 2018.

SHOOTING THE BULL

TRIBAL CONNECTION:
A new dating app is promising to match you up with someone – without seeing their face. “Tribal” blurs users’ profile photos to potential matches for 72 hours. By doing this, it claims to encourages daters to focus on the person behind the screen, and foster deeper conversations, “leading to more meaningful interactions”. Created by a clinical psychologist, Tribal also functions as a friendship-finder. It connects users based on shared values, interests, and communications styles, based on scientific-based questions posed to its members. While users aren’t able to see a possible match for 72 hours, they are allowed to hear their voice, adding a layer of human connection, said the app’s creator.
(Oh great. Now I get ghosted AFTER I get attached…)
(72 hours? That’s a long time to emotionally commit to someone who might have a soul patch!)

VACATION DISTRACTION:
When your vacation time is approaching, do you count down the days by slowly slacking off at work? Probably, according to a new survey. The poll of 2,000 adults in the US found that 70% of people mentally “clock out” and enter “vacation mode” a full 3 days before their time off actually begins. And while we might put that down to human nature (after all, have you ever seen a classroom full of 7th graders in the last week before summer holidays?), the poll also found that 62% of workers know they need a vacation when they feel mentally burned out. And 3 days of being “mentally checked out” at work might have some relationship to this stat: 45% of respondents said they need roughly 3 days to adequately prepare to go away on vacation.
(I need twice that long just to adequately prepare to say goodbye to my dog!)
(The boss calls it ‘slacking off’. I call it ‘strategic disengagement’. Tomato, tomahto!)

TECH TALK:
⇒ A new AI scanner promises to instantly tell you the nutritional value of your meal – from a photo you take using your phone. State of the art tech is used to calculate calorie count, fat content, and nutritional value, from images of food taken on a smartphone. The user simply snaps a photo of their meal, and AI is able to instantly tell you its nutritional value, without the need for food diaries or guesswork. Actually, it’s not quite ready yet, but the system is getting close to reality, thanks to scientists at New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering. Their tech uses advanced deep-learning algorithms to recognize food items in images and calculate their nutritional content – including calories, protein, carbohydrates and fat, and promises to “remove human error” from traditional methods of tracking food intake. (Finally, an app that judges my meals just like my mom does!)
⇒ Using a phone or laptop in bed raises the risk of insomnia by 59%. Norwegian researchers found that one hour’s screen use after going to bed also reduces your sleep time by 24 minutes. The scientists found that using a screen in bed at night makes not only makes it likely you’ll sleep less – it also increases the chances of poor-quality sleep. The researchers suggest that people who struggle to sleep should stop looking at their phone or laptop at least 30 minutes before getting into bed. By the way, they also found that social media use is no worse than any other form of screen time. (An extra 24 minutes awake? Perfect, more time for doomscrolling!)
(Those 2 stories were brought to you by you by “Big Tech”… helping you to be tired and hungry at the same time!)

NEW OLD WORDS:
The Oxford English Dictionary is adding 42 of what it calls “untranslatable” words (and terms) from South Africa, Ireland, and Southeast Asia, in its quarterly update. Here are some of them…try to work at least 3 into a conversation today…
➢ Gigil: From the Philippines, it’s “a feeling we get when we see someone or something cute…so intense that it gives us the irresistible urge to…clench our hands, grit our teeth, and pinch or squeeze…whatever it is we find so adorable, whether it be a chubby-cheeked baby or a fluffy little kitten”
➢ Alamak (Malyasia): an interjection expressing shock, dismay, or outrage
➢ Zol (South Africa): colloquial for “marijuana”
➢ Ludraman (Ireland): a lazy, unproductive, or stupid person (I’m looking forward to a ‘Ludraman’ weekend…)
➢ Gatvol (South Africa): having had enough of a person or situation (This one will be easy to use today…)
➢ Mineral (Ireland): a carbonated soft drink
➢ Videoke (Philippines): local version of karaoke that uses a scoring system (Oh, so “American Idol”!)
➢ Moggy (South Africa): extremely irrational; out of touch with reality
➢ Act the maggot (Ireland): to behave foolishly (Only the Irish would come up with that…)
➢ Sharp-sharp (South Africa): a casual salutation
➢ Mat rempit (Malaysia): a [typically young] man who participates in illegal motorcycle street racing and…performs dangerous stunts (Funnily enough, this is probably also an appropriate description of NY Rangers goon Matt Rempe!)

DID YOU KNOW?
A cat named after a character in “The Addams Family” has a new claim to fame. Mr. Pugsley Addams, a silver Maine Coon from Minnesota, has claimed the Guinness World Record for the longest tail. The 2-year-old has a tail measuring 18.5 inches (47cm). Owner Amanda Cameron recalls that the cat’s tail length was mentioned at his very first vet visit, and later, her kids decided research the current record title holder. To their surprise, “Pugsley beat it!” Amanda says that while Pugs is very mischievous, he’s also “kind and caring and loves his momma.” (And when the kids ask: “Where’s Pugsley?” The correct answer is always: “Which part?”)
